Iโm running for my life, bolting down hallways and up staircases. A low, insistent alarm has gone off, its high, piercing sound sending shocks of fear through me even as my feet pound the floor. I feel strong, steady, but Iโm increasingly aware of my inability to navigate these snaking paths. I could see
โcould feelโEmmaline growing weaker as I left, and now, the farther I get from her, the dimmer our connection becomes. She showed me, in her memories, how Max and Evie slowly stripped her of control; Emmaline is more powerful than anyone, but now she can only use her powers on command. It took all her strength to push past the fail-safes long enough to use her strength at will, and now that her voice has retreated from my mind, I know she wonโt be back. Not anytime soon. I have to figure out my own way out of here.
I will.
My power is back on. I can get through anything from here. I have to.
And when I hear someone shout I spin around, ready to fightโ
But the face in the distance is so familiar I stop, stunned, in my tracks. Kenji barrels into me.
Kenji.
Kenji is hugging me. Kenji is hugging me, and heโs uninjured. Heโs perfect.
And just as I begin to return his embrace he swears, violently, and launches himself backward. โJesus, womanโ Are you trying to kill me? You canโt turn that shit off for a second? You have to go and ruin our dramatic reunion by nearly murdering me even after Iโve gone to all the trouble of fโโ I launch myself into his arms again and he stiffens, relaxing only when he realizes Iโve pulled my power back. I forgot, for a second, how much of my
skin was exposed in this dress.
โKenji,โ I breathe. โYouโre alive. Youโre okay. Oh my God.โ
โHey,โ he says. โHey.โ He pulls back, looks me in the eye. โIโm okay. You okay?โ
I donโt really know how to answer the question. Finally, I say, โIโm not sure.โ
He studies my face for a second. He looks concerned.
And then, the knot of fear growing only more painful in my throat, I ask the question killing me most:
โWhereโs Warner?โ Kenji shakes his head.
I feel myself begin to unravel.
โI donโt know yet,โ Kenji says quietly. โBut weโre going to find him, okay? Donโt worry.โ
I nod. My bottom lip trembles and I bite it down but the tremble wonโt be killed. It grows, multiplies, evolves into a tremor that shakes me from stem to sternum.
โHey,โ Kenji says. I look up.
โYou want to tell me where all the blood came from?โ I blink. โWhat blood?โ
He raises his eyebrows at me. โTheย blood,โ he says, gesturing, generally, at my body. โOn your face. Your dress. All over your hands.โ
โOh,โ I say, startled. I look at my hands as if seeing them for the first time. โThe blood.โ
Kenji sighs, squints at something over my shoulder. He pulls a pair of gloves out of his back pocket and tugs them on. โAll right, princess, turn your power back on. We have to move.โ
We break apart. Kenji pulls his invisibility over us both. โFollow me,โ he says, taking my hand.
โWhere are we going?โ I say.
โWhat do you mean,ย where are we going? Weโre getting the hell out of here.โ
โButโ What about Warner?โ
โNazeera is looking for him as we speak.โ
I stop so suddenly I nearly stumble. โNazeera is here?โ
โUh, yeahโ Soโ Itโs a really long story? But the short answer is yes.โ โSo thatโs how you got in here,โ I say, beginning to understand.
โNazeera.โ
Kenji makes a sound of disbelief. โWow, right off the bat you give me no credit, huh? Cโmon, J, you know I love a good rescue mission. I know some things. I can figure things out, too.โ
For the first time in weeks I feel a smile tug at my lips. A laugh builds and breaks inside my body. Iโve missed this so much. Iโve missed my friends so much. Emotion wells in my throat, surprising me.
โI missed you, Kenji,โ I say. โIโm so happy youโre here.โ
โHey,โ Kenji says sharply. โDonโt you dare start crying. If you start crying Iโll start crying and we do not have time to cry right now. We have too much
shit to do, okay? We can cry later, at a more convenient time. Okay?โ When I say nothing, he squeezes my hand.
โOkay?โ he says again. โOkay,โ I say.
I hear him sigh. โDamn,โ he says. โThey really messed you up in here, didnโt they?โ
โYeah.โ
โIโm so sorry,โ he says.
โCan we cry about it later? Iโll tell you everything.โ
โHell yeah we can cry about it later.โ Kenji tugs gently on my hand to get us moving again. โI have so much shit to cry about, J. So much. We should make, like, a list.โ
โGood idea,โ I say, but my heart is in my throat again.
โHey, donโt worry,โ Kenji says, reading my thoughts. โSeriously. Weโll find Warner. Nazeera knows what sheโs doing.โ
โBut I donโt think I can just wait while Nazeera goes searching for him. I canโt just stand aroundโ I need to do something. I need to look for him myselfโโ
โUh-uh. No way. Nazeera and I split up on purpose.ย Myย mission is to get you on the plane.ย Herย mission is to get Warner on the plane. Thatโs how math works.โ
โWaitโ You have a plane?โ
โHow else did you think we got here?โ โI have no idea.โ
โWell, thatโs another long story, and Iโll fill you in later, but the highlights are that Nazeera is very confusing but helpful, and according to her calculations, we need to be getting the hell out of here yesterday. Weโre running out of time.โ
โBut wait, Kenjiโ What happened to everyone? Last time I saw you, you were bleeding. Brendan had been shot. Castle was down. I thought everyone was dead.โ
Kenji doesnโt answer me at first. โYou really have no idea what happened, huh?โ he says finally.
โI only know that I didnโt actually kill all those people at the symposium.โ โOh yeah?โ He sounds surprised. โWho told you?โ
โEmmaline.โ โYourย sister?โ
โYeah,โ I say, sighing heavily. โThereโs so much I have to tell you. But firstโ Please tell me everyone is still alive.โ
Kenji hesitates. โI mean, I think so? Honestly, I donโt know. Nazeera says theyโre alive. Sheโs promising to come through on getting them to safety, so Iโm still holding my breath. But get this.โ He stops walking, puts an invisible
hand on my shoulder. โYouโre never going to believe this.โ โLet me guess,โ I say. โAnderson is alive.โ
I hear Kenjiโs sharp intake of breath. โHow did you know?โ โEvie told me.โ
โSo you know about how he came back to Sector 45?โ โWhat?โ I say. โNo.โ
โWell, what I was about to tell you, right now, was that Anderson came back to base. Heโs resumed his position as supreme commander of North America. He was there right before we left. Nazeera told me he made up this whole story about how heโd been ill and how our team had spread false rumors while he was recoveringโand that youโd been executed for your deception.โ
โWhat?โ I say, stunned. โThatโs insane.โ โThis is what Iโm saying.โ
โSo what are we going to do when we get back to Sector 45?โ I say. โWhere do we go? Where do we stay?โ
โShit if I know,โ Kenji says. โRight now, Iโm just hoping we can get out of here alive.โ
Finally, we reach the exit. Kenji has a security card that grants him access to the door, and it opens easily.
From there, itโs almost too simple. Our invisibility keeps us undetected.
And once weโre on the plane, Kenji checks his watch.
โWeโve only got thirty minutes, just so you know. That was the rule. Thirty minutes and if Nazeera doesnโt show up with Warner, we have to go.โ
My heart drops into my stomach.
