โAt first, Leo thought rocks mereย pelting the windshield. Then he realized it was sleet. Frost built up around the edges of the glass, and slushy waves of ice blotted out his view.โ
โAn ice storm?โ Piper shouted over the engine and the wind. โIs it supposed to be this cold in Sonoma?โ
Leo wasnโt sure, but something about this storm seemed conscious, malevolentโlike it was intentionally slamming them.
Jason woke up quickly. He crawled forward, grabbing their seats for balance. โWeโve got to be getting close.โ
Leo was too busy wrestling with the stick to reply. Suddenly it wasnโt so easy to drive the chopper. Its movements turned sluggish and jerky. The whole machine shuddered in the icy wind. The helicopter probably hadnโt been prepped for cold-weather flying. The controls refused to respond, and they started to lose altitude.
Below them, the ground was a dark quilt of trees and fog. The ridge of a hill loomed in front of them and Leo yanked the stick, just clearing the treetops.
โThere!โ Jason shouted.
A small valley opened up before them, with the murky shape of a building in the middle. Leo aimed the helicopter straight for it. All around them were flashes of light that reminded Leo of the tracer fire at Midasโs compound. Trees cracked and exploded at the edges of the clearing. Shapes moved through the mist. Combat seemed to be everywhere.
He set down the helicopter in an icy field about fifty yards from the house and killed the engine. He was about to relax when he heard a whistling sound and saw a dark shape hurtling toward them out of the mist.
โOut!โ Leo screamed.
They leaped from the helicopter and barely cleared the rotors before a massiveย BOOMย shook the ground, knocking Leo off his feet and splattering ice all over him.
He got up shakily and saw that the worldโs largest snowballโa chunk of snow, ice, and dirt the size of a garageโhad completely flattened the Bell 412.
โYou all right?โ Jason ran up to him, Piper at his side. They both looked fine except for being speckled with snow and mud.
โYeah.โ Leo shivered. โGuess we owe that ranger lady a new helicopter.โ
Piper pointed south. โFightingโs over there.โ Then she frowned. โNo โฆ itโs all around us.โ
She was right. The sounds of combat rang across the valley. The snow and mist made it hard to tell for sure, but there seemed to be a circle of fighting all around the Wolf House.
Behind them loomed Jack Londonโs dream homeโa massive ruin of red and gray stones and rough-hewn timber beams. Leo could imagine how it had looked before it burned downโa combination log cabin and castle, like a billionaire lumberjack might build. But in the mist and sleet, the place had a lonely, haunted feel. Leo could totally believe the ruins were cursed.
โJason!โ a girlโs voice called.
Thalia appeared from the fog, her parka caked with snow. Her bow was in her hand, and her quiver was almost empty. She ran toward them, but made it only a few steps before a six-armed ogreโone of the Earthbornโ burst out of the storm behind her, a raised club in each hand.
โLook out!โ Leo yelled. They rushed to help, but Thalia had it under control. She launched herself into a flip, notching an arrow as she pivoted like a gymnast and landed in a kneeling position. The ogre got a silver arrow right between the eyes and melted into a pile of clay.
Thalia stood and retrieved her arrow, but the point had snapped off. โThat was my last one.โ She kicked the pile of clay resentfully. โStupid ogre.โ
โNice shot, though,โ Leo said.
Thalia ignored him as usual (which no doubt meant she thought he was as cool as ever). She hugged Jason and nodded to Piper. โJust in time. My Hunters are holding a perimeter around the mansion, but weโll be overrun any minute.โ
โBy Earthborn?โ Jason asked.
โAndย wolvesโLycaonโs minions.โ Thalia blew a fleck of ice off her nose. โAlso storm spiritsโโ
โBut we gave them to Aeolus!โ Piper protested.
โWho tried to kill us,โ Leo reminded her. โMaybe heโs helping Gaea again.โ
โI donโt know,โ Thalia said. โBut the monsters keep re-forming almost as fast as we can kill them. We took the Wolf House with no problem: surprised the guards and sent them straight to Tartarus. But then this freak snowstorm blew in. Wave after wave of monsters started attacking. Now weโre surrounded. I donโt know who or what is leading the assault, but I think they planned this. It was a trap to kill anyone who tried to rescue Hera.โ
โWhere is she?โ Jason asked.
โInside,โ Thalia said. โWe tried to free her, but we canโt figure out how to break the cage. Itโs only a few minutes until the sun goes down. Hera thinks thatโs the moment when Porphyrion will be reborn. Plus, most monsters are stronger at night. If we donโt free Hera soonโโ
She didnโt need to finish the thought.
Leo, Jason, and Piper followed her into the ruined mansion.
Jason stepped over the threshold and immediately collapsed. โHey!โ Leo caught him. โNone of that, man. Whatโs wrong?โ
โThis place โฆโ Jason shook his head. โSorry โฆ It came rushing back to me.โ
โSo youย haveย been here,โ Piper said.
โWe both have,โ Thalia said. Her expression was grim, like she was reliving someoneโs death. โThis is where my mom took us when Jason was a child. She left him here, told me he was dead. He just disappeared.โ
โShe gave me to the wolves,โ Jason murmured. โAt Heraโs insistence.
She gave me to Lupa.โ
โThat part I didnโt know.โ Thalia frowned. โWho is Lupa?โ
An explosion shook the building. Just outside, a blue mushroom cloud billowed up, raining snowflakes and ice like a nuclear blast made of cold instead of heat.
โMaybe this isnโt the time for questions,โ Leo suggested. โShow us the goddess.โ
Once inside, Jason seemed to get his bearings. The house was built in a giantย U, and Jason led them between the two wings to an outside courtyard with an empty reflecting pool. At the bottom of the pool, just as Jason had described from his dream, two spires of rock and root tendrils had cracked through the foundation.
One of the spires was much biggerโa solid dark mass about twenty feet high, and to Leo it looked like a stone body bag. Underneath the mass of fused tendrils he could make out the shape of a head, wide shoulders, a massive chest and arms, like the creature was stuck waist deep in the earth. No, not stuckโrising.
On the opposite end of the pool, the other spire was smaller and more loosely woven. Each tendril was as thick as a telephone pole, with so little space between them that Leo doubted he couldโve gotten his arm through. Still, he could see inside. And in the center of the cage stood Tรญa Callida.
She looked exactly like Leo remembered: dark hair covered with a shawl, the black dress of a widow, a wrinkled face with glinting, scary eyes.
She didnโt glow or radiate any sort of power. She looked like a regular mortal woman, his good old psychotic babysitter.
Leo dropped into the pool and approached the cage.ย โHola, Tรญa.ย Little bit of trouble?โ
She crossed her arms and sighed in exasperation. โDonโt inspect me like Iโm one of your machines, Leo Valdez. Get me out of here!โ
Thalia stepped next to him and looked at the cage with distasteโor maybe she was looking at the goddess. โWe tried everything we could think of, Leo, but maybe my heart wasnโt in it. If it was up to me, Iโd just leave her in there.โ
โOhh, Thalia Grace,โ the goddess said. โWhen I get out of here, youโll be sorry you were ever born.โ
โSave it!โ Thalia snapped. โYouโve been nothing but a curse to every child of Zeus for ages. You sent a bunch of intestinally challenged cows after my friend Annabethโโ
โShe was disrespectful!โ
โYou dropped a statue on my legs.โ โIt was an accident!โ
โAndย you took my brother!โ Thaliaโs voice cracked with emotion. โHereโon this spot. You ruined our lives. We should leave you to Gaea!โ
โHey,โ Jason intervened. โThaliaโSisโI know. But this isnโt the time.
You should help your Hunters.โ
Thalia clenched her jaw. โFine. For you, Jason. But if you ask me, she isnโt worth it.โ
Thalia turned, leaped out of the pool, and stormed from the building.
Leo turned to Hera with grudging respect. โIntestinally challenged cows?โ
โFocus on the cage, Leo,โ she grumbled. โAnd Jasonโyou are wiser than your sister. I chose my champion well.โ
โIโm not your champion, lady,โ Jason said. โIโm only helping you because you stole my memories and youโre better than the alternative. Speaking of which, whatโs going on with that?โ
He nodded to the other spire that looked like the king-size granite body bag. Was Leo imagining it, or had it grown taller since theyโd gotten here?
โThat, Jason,โ Hera said, โis the king of the giants being reborn.โ โGross,โ Piper said.
โIndeed,โ Hera said. โPorphyrion, the strongest of his kind. Gaea needed a great deal of power to raise him again โmyย power. For weeks Iโve grown weaker as my essence was used to grow him a new form.โ
โSo youโre like a heat lamp,โ Leo guessed. โOr fertilizer.โ
The goddess glared at him, but Leo didnโt care. This old lady had been making his life miserable since he was a baby. He totally had rights to rag on her.
โJoke all you wish,โ Hera said in a clipped tone. โBut at sundown, it will be too late. The giant will awake. He will offer me a choice: marry
him, or be consumed by the earth. And I cannot marry him. We will all be destroyed. And as we die, Gaea will awaken.โ
Leo frowned at the giantโs spire. โCanโt we blow it up or something?โ โWithout me, you do not have the power,โ Hera said. โYou might as
well try to destroy a mountain.โ
โDone that once today,โ Jason said.
โJust hurry up and let me out!โ Hera demanded. Jason scratched his head. โLeo, can you do it?โ
โI donโt know.โ Leo tried not to panic. โBesides, if sheโs a goddess, why hasnโt she busted herself out?โ
Hera paced furiously around her cage, cursing in Ancient Greek. โUse your brain, Leo Valdez. Iย pickedย you because youโre intelligent. Once trapped, a godโs power is useless. Your own father trapped me once in a golden chair. It was humiliating! I had to begโbegย him for my freedom and apologize for throwing him off Olympus.โ
โSounds fair,โ Leo said.
Hera gave him the godly stink-eye. โIโve watched you since you were a child, son of Hephaestus, because I knew you could aid me at this moment. If anyone can find a way to destroy thisย abomination, it is you.โ
โBut itโs not a machine. Itโs like Gaea thrust her hand out of the ground and โฆโ Leo felt dizzy. The line of their prophecy came back to him:ย The forge and dove shall break the cage.โHold on. I do have an idea. Piper, Iโm going to need your help. And weโre going to need time.โ
The air turned brittle with cold. The temperature dropped so fast, Leoโs lips cracked and his breath changed to mist. Frost coated the walls of the Wolf House.ย Ventiย rushed in โbut instead of winged men, these were shaped like horses, with dark storm-cloud bodies and manes that crackled with lightning. Some had silver arrows sticking out of their flanks. Behind them came red-eyed wolves and the six-armed Earthborn.
Piper drew her dagger. Jason grabbed an ice-covered plank off the pool floor. Leo reached into his tool belt, but he was so shaken up, all he produced was a tin of breath mints. He shoved them back in, hoping nobody had noticed, and drew a hammer instead.
One of the wolves padded forward. It was dragging a human-size statue by the leg. At the edge of the pool, the wolf opened its maw and
dropped the statue for them to seeโan ice sculpture of a girl, an archer with short spiky hair and a surprised look on her face.
โThalia!โ Jason rushed forward, but Piper and Leo pulled him back. The ground around Thaliaโs statue was already webbed with ice. Leo feared if Jason touched her, he might freeze too.
โWho did this?โ Jason yelled. His body crackled with electricity. โIโll kill you myself!โ
From somewhere behind the monsters, Leo heard a girlโs laughter, clear and cold. She stepped out of the mist in her snowy white dress, a silver crown atop her long black hair. She regarded them with those deep brown eyes Leo had thought were so beautiful in Quebec.
โBon soir, mes amis,โย said Khione, the goddess of snow. She gave Leo a frosty smile. โAlas, son of Hephaestus, you say you need time? Iโm afraid time is one tool you do not have.โ
