Chapter no 40 – โ€Œโ€ŒPIPER

The Lost Hero

โ€ŒPiper moke at a table at a sidemalk cafรฉ.โ€Œ

For a second, she thought she was still dreaming. It was a sunny morning. The air was brisk but not unpleasant for sitting outside. At the other tables, a mix of bicyclists, business people, and college kids sat chatting and drinking coffee.

She could smell eucalyptus trees. Lots of foot traffic passed in front of quaint little shops. The street was lined with bottle-brush trees and blooming azaleas as if winter was a foreign concept.

In other words: she was in California.

Her friends sat in chairs around herโ€”all of them with their hands calmly folded across their chests, dozing pleasantly. And they all had new clothes on. Piper looked down at her own outfit and gasped. โ€œMother!โ€

She yelled louder than she meant. Jason flinched, bumping the table with his knees, and then all of them were awake.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Hedge demanded. โ€œFight who? Where?โ€

โ€œFalling!โ€ Leo grabbed the table. โ€œNoโ€”not falling. Where are we?โ€

Jason blinked, trying to get his bearings. He focused on Piper and made a little choking sound. โ€œWhat are you wearing?โ€

Piper probably blushed. She was wearing the turquoise dress sheโ€™d seen in her dream, with black leggings and black leather boots. She had on her favorite silver charm bracelet, even though sheโ€™d left that back home in L.A., and her old snowboarding jacket from her dad, which amazingly went with the outfit pretty well. She pulled out Katoptris, and judging from the reflection in the blade, sheโ€™d gotten her hair done, too.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s myโ€”โ€ She remembered Aphroditeโ€™s warning not to mention that theyโ€™d talked. โ€œItโ€™s nothing.โ€

Leo grinned. โ€œAphrodite strikes again, huh? Youโ€™re gonna be the best- dressed warrior in town, beauty queen.โ€

โ€œHey, Leo.โ€ Jason nudged his arm. โ€œYou look at yourself recently?โ€ โ€œWhat โ€ฆ oh.โ€

All of them had been give a makeover. Leo was wearing pinstriped pants, black leather shoes, a white collarless shirt with suspenders, and his tool belt, Ray-Ban sunglasses, and a porkpie hat.

โ€œGod, Leo.โ€ Piper tried not to laugh. โ€œI think my dad wore that to his last premiere, minus the tool belt.โ€

โ€œHey, shut up!โ€

โ€œI think he looks good,โ€ said Coach Hedge. โ€œโ€™Course, I look better.โ€

The satyr was a pastel nightmare. Aphrodite had given him a baggy canary yellow zoot suit with two-tone shoes that fit over his hooves. He had a matching yellow broad-brimmed hat, a rose-colored shirt, a baby blue tie, and a blue carnation in his lapel, which Hedge sniffed and then ate.

โ€œWell,โ€ Jason said, โ€œat least your mom overlooked me.โ€

Piper knew that wasnโ€™t exactly true. Looking at him, her heart did a little tap dance. Jason was dressed simply in jeans and a clean purple T- shirt, like heโ€™d worn at the Grand Canyon. He had new track shoes on, and his hair was newly trimmed. His eyes were the same color as the sky. Aphroditeโ€™s message was clear:ย This one needs no improvement.

And Piper agreed.

โ€œAnyway,โ€ she said uncomfortably, โ€œhow did we get here?โ€

โ€œOh, that would be Mellie,โ€ Hedge said, chewing happily on his carnation. โ€œThose winds shot us halfway across the country, Iโ€™d guess. We wouldโ€™ve been smashed flat on impact, but Mellieโ€™s last giftโ€”a nice soft breezeโ€”cushioned our fall.โ€

โ€œAnd she got fired for us,โ€ Leo said. โ€œMan, we suck.โ€

โ€œAh, sheโ€™ll be fine,โ€ Hedge said. โ€œBesides, she couldnโ€™t help herself. Iโ€™ve got that effect on nymphs. Iโ€™ll send her a message when weโ€™re through with this quest and help her figure something out. That is oneย auraย I could settle down with and raise a herd of baby goats.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to be sick,โ€ Piper said. โ€œAnyone else want coffee?โ€

โ€œCoffee!โ€ Hedgeโ€™s grin was stained blue from the flower. โ€œI love coffee!โ€

โ€œUm,โ€ Jason said, โ€œbutโ€”money? Our packs?โ€

Piper looked down. Their packs were at their feet, and everything seemed to still be there. She reached into her coat pocket and felt two things she hadnโ€™t expected. One was a wad of cash. The other was a glass vialโ€”the amnesia potion. She left the vial in her pocket and brought out the money.

Leo whistled. โ€œAllowance? Piper, your mom rocks!โ€

โ€œWaitress!โ€ Hedge called. โ€œSix double espressos, and whatever these guys want. Put it on the girlโ€™s tab.โ€

It didnโ€™t take them long to figure out where they were. The menus said โ€œCafรฉ Verve, Walnut Creek, CA.โ€ And according to the waitress, it was 9

a.m. on December 21, the winter solstice, which gave them three hours until Enceladusโ€™s deadline.

They didnโ€™t have to wonder where Mount Diablo was, either. They could see it on the horizon, right at the end of the street. After the Rockies, Mount Diablo didnโ€™t look very large, nor was it covered in snow. It seemed downright peaceful, its golden creases marbled with gray-green trees. But size was deceptive with mountains, Piper knew. It was probably much bigger up close. And appearances were deceptive too. Here they wereโ€” back in Californiaโ€”supposedly her homeโ€”with sunny skies, mild weather, laid-back people, and a plate of chocolate chip scones with coffee. And only a few miles away, somewhere on that peaceful mountain, a superpowerful, super-evil giant was about to have her father for lunch.

Leo pulled something out of his pocketโ€”the old crayon drawing Aeolus had given him. Aphrodite mustโ€™ve thought it was important if sheโ€™d magically transferred it to his new outfit.

โ€œWhat is that?โ€ Piper asked.

Leo folded it up gingerly again and put it away. โ€œNothing. You donโ€™t want to see my kindergarten artwork.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s more than that,โ€ Jason guessed. โ€œAeolus said it was the key to our success.โ€

Leo shook his head. โ€œNot today. He was talking aboutโ€ฆ later.โ€

โ€œHow can you be sure?โ€ Piper asked.

โ€œTrust me,โ€ Leo said. โ€œNowโ€”whatโ€™s our game plan?โ€

Coach Hedge belched. Heโ€™d already had three espressos and a plate of doughnuts, along with two napkins and another flower from the vase on the table. He wouldโ€™ve eaten the silverware, except Piper had slapped his hand.

โ€œClimb the mountain,โ€ Hedge said. โ€œKill everything except Piperโ€™s dad. Leave.โ€

โ€œThank you, General Eisenhower,โ€ Jason grumbled. โ€œHey, Iโ€™m just saying!โ€

โ€œGuys,โ€ Piper said. โ€œThereโ€™s more you need to know.โ€

It was tricky, because she couldnโ€™t mention her mom; but she told them sheโ€™d figured some things out in her dreams. She told them about their real enemy: Gaea.

โ€œGaea?โ€ Leo shook his head. โ€œIsnโ€™t that Mother Nature? Sheโ€™s supposed to have, like, flowers in her hair and birds singing around her and deer and rabbits doing her laundry.โ€

โ€œLeo, thatโ€™s Snow White,โ€ Piper said. โ€œOkay, butโ€”โ€

โ€œListen, cupcake.โ€ Coach Hedge dabbed the espresso out of his goatee. โ€œPiperโ€™s telling us some serious stuff, here. Gaeaโ€™s no softie. Iโ€™m not even sureย Iย could take her.โ€

Leo whistled. โ€œReally?โ€

Hedge nodded. โ€œThis earth ladyโ€”she and her old man the sky were nasty customers.โ€

โ€œOuranos,โ€ Piper said. She couldnโ€™t help looking up at the blue sky, wondering if it had eyes.

โ€œRight,โ€ Hedge said. โ€œSo Ouranos, heโ€™s not the best dad. He throws their first kids, the Cyclopes, into Tartarus. That makes Gaea mad, but she bides her time. Then they have another set of kidsโ€”the twelve Titansโ€” and Gaea is afraid theyโ€™ll get thrown into prison too. So she goes up to her son Kronosโ€”โ€

โ€œThe big bad dude,โ€ Leo said. โ€œThe one they defeated last summer.โ€

โ€œRight. And Gaeaโ€™s the one who gives him the scythe, and tells him, โ€˜Hey, why donโ€™t I call your dad down here? And while heโ€™s talking to me, distracted, you can cut him to pieces. Then you can take over the world. Wouldnโ€™t that be great?โ€™โ€

Nobody said anything. Piperโ€™s chocolate chip scone didnโ€™t look so appetizing anymore. Even though sheโ€™d heard the story before, she still couldnโ€™t quite get her mind around it. She tried to imagine a kid so messed up, he would kill his own dad just for power. Then she imagined a mom so messed up, she would convince her son to do it.

โ€œDefinitely not Snow White,โ€ she decided.

โ€œNah, Kronos was a bad guy,โ€ Hedge said. โ€œBut Gaea is literally theย motherย of all bad guys. Sheโ€™s so old and powerful, soย huge, that itโ€™s hard for her to be fully conscious. Most of the time, she sleeps, and thatโ€™s the way we like herโ€”snoring.โ€โ€œBut she talked to me,โ€ Leo said. โ€œHow can she be asleep?โ€

Gleeson brushed crumbs off his canary yellow lapel. He was on his sixth espresso now, and his pupils were as big as quarters. โ€œEven in her sleep, part of her consciousness is activeโ€”dreaming, keeping watch, doing little things like causing volcanoes to explode and monsters to rise. Even now, sheโ€™s not fully awake. Believe me, you donโ€™t want to see her fully awake.โ€

โ€œBut sheโ€™s getting more powerful,โ€ Piper said. โ€œSheโ€™s causing the giants to rise. And if their king comes backโ€”this guy Porphyrionโ€”โ€

โ€œHeโ€™ll raise an army to destroy the gods,โ€ Jason put in. โ€œStarting with Hera. Itโ€™ll be another war. And Gaea will wake up fully.โ€

Gleeson nodded. โ€œWhich is why itโ€™s a good idea for us to stay off the ground as much as possible.โ€

Leo looked warily at Mount Diablo. โ€œSo โ€ฆ climbing a mountain. That would be bad.โ€

Piperโ€™s heart sank. First, sheโ€™d been asked to betray her friends. Now they were trying to help her rescue her dad even though they knew they were walking into a trap. The idea of fighting a giant had been scary enough. But the idea that Gaea was behind itโ€”a force more powerful than a god or Titan โ€ฆ

โ€œGuys, I canโ€™t ask you to do this,โ€ Piper said. โ€œThis is too dangerous.โ€

โ€œYou kidding?โ€ Gleeson belched and showed them his blue carnation smile. โ€œWhoโ€™s ready to beat stuff up?โ€
