โJasonโs jam dropped. The central sectionย of Aeolusโs fortress was as big as a cathedral, with a soaring domed roof covered in silver. Television equipment floated randomly through the airโcameras, spotlights, set pieces, potted plants. And there was no floor. Leo almost fell into the chasm before Jason pulled him back.โ
โHolyโ!โ Leo gulped. โHey, Mellie. A little warning next time!โ
An enormous circular pit plunged into the heart of the mountain. It was probably half a mile deep, honeycombed with caves. Some of the tunnels probably led straight outside. Jason remembered seeing winds blast out of them when theyโd been on Pikes Peak. Other caves were sealed with some glistening material like glass or wax. The whole cavern bustled with harpies,ย aurai, and paper airplanes, but for someone who couldnโt fly, it would be a very long, very fatal fall.
โOh, my,โ Mellie gasped. โIโm so sorry.โ She unclipped a walkie-talkie from somewhere inside her robes and spoke into it: โHello, sets? Is that Nuggets? Hi, Nuggets. Could we get a floor in the main studio, please? Yes, a solid one. Thanks.โ
A few seconds later, an army of harpies rose from the pitโthree dozen or so demon chicken ladies, all carrying squares of various building material. They went to work hammering and gluingโand using large quantities of duct tape, which didnโt reassure Jason. In no time there was a makeshift floor snaking out over the chasm. It was made of plywood, marble blocks, carpet squares, wedges of grass sodโjust about anything.
โThat canโt be safe,โ Jason said.
โOh, it is!โ Mellie assured him. โThe harpies are very good.โ
Easy for her to say. She just drifted across without touching the floor, but Jason decided he had the best chance at surviving, since he could fly,
so he stepped out first. Amazingly, the floor held.
Piper gripped his hand and followed him. โIf I fall, youโre catching me.โ
โUh, sure.โ Jason hoped he wasnโt blushing.
Leo stepped out next. โYouโre catching me, too, Superman. But I ainโt holding your hand.โ
Mellie led them toward the middle of the chamber, where a loose sphere of flat-panel video screens floated around a kind of control center. A man hovered inside, checking monitors and reading paper airplane messages.
The man paid them no attention as Mellie brought them forward. She pushed a forty-two-inch Sony out of their way and led them into the control area.
Leo whistled. โIย gotย to get a room like this.โ
The floating screens showed all sorts of television programs. Some Jason recognizedโnews broadcasts, mostlyโbut some programs looked a little strange: gladiators fighting, demigods battling monsters. Maybe they were movies, but they looked more like reality shows.
At the far end of the sphere was a silky blue backdrop like a cinema screen, with cameras and studio lights floating around it.
The man in the center was talking into an earpiece phone. He had a remote control in each hand and was pointing them at various screens, seemingly at random.
He wore a business suit that looked like the skyโblue mostly, but dappled with clouds that changed and darkened and moved across the fabric. He looked like he was in his sixties, with a shock of white hair, but he had a ton of stage makeup on, and that smooth plastic-surgery look to his face, so he appeared not really young, not really old, justย wrongโlike a Ken doll someone had halfway melted in a microwave. His eyes darted back and forth from screen to screen, like he was trying to absorb everything at once. He muttered things into his phone, and his mouth kept twitching. He was either amused, or crazy, or both.
Mellie floated toward him. โAh, sir, Mr. Aeolus, these demigodsโโ โHold it!โ He held up a hand to silence her, then pointed at one of the
screens. โWatch!โ
It was one of those storm-chaser programs, where insane thrill-seekers drive after tornados. As Jason watched, a Jeep plowed straight into a funnel cloud and got tossed into the sky.
Aeolus shrieked with delight. โThe Disaster Channel. People do thatย on purpose!โ He turned toward Jason with a mad grin. โIsnโt that amazing? Letโs watch it again.โ
โUm, sir,โ Mellie said, โthis is Jason, son ofโโ
โYes, yes, I remember,โ Aeolus said. โYouโre back. How did it go?โ Jason hesitated. โSorry? I think youโve mistaken meโโ
โNo, no, Jason Grace, arenโt you? It wasโwhatโlast year? You were on your way to fight a sea monster, I believe.โ
โIโI donโt remember.โ
Aelous laughed. โMust not have been a very good sea monster! No, I remember every hero whoโs ever come to me for aid. Odysseusโgods, he docked at my island for a month! At least you only stayed a few days. Now, watch this video. These ducks get sucked straight intoโโ
โSir,โ Mellie interrupted. โTwo minutes to air.โ
โAir!โ Aeolus exclaimed. โI love air. How do I look? Makeup!โ
Immediately a small tornado of brushes, blotters, and cotton balls descended on Aeolus. They blurred across his face in a cloud of flesh-tone smoke until his coloration was even more gruesome than before. Wind swirled through his hair and left it sticking up like a frosted Christmas tree. โMr. Aeolus.โ Jason slipped off the golden backpack. โWe brought you
these rogue storm spirits.โ
โDid you!โ Aeolus looked at the bag like it was a gift from a fanโ something he really didnโt want. โWell, how nice.โ
Leo nudged him, and Jason offered the bag. โBoreas sent us to capture them for you. We hope youโll accept them and stopโyou knowโordering demigods to be killed.โ
Aeolus laughed, and looked incredulously at Mellie. โDemigods be killedโdid I order that?โ
Mellie checked her computer tablet. โYes, sir, fifteenth of September. โStorm spirits released by the death of Typhon, demigods to be held responsible,โ etcโฆ yes, a general order for them all to be killed.โ
โOh, pish,โ Aeolus said. โI was just grumpy. Rescind that order, Mellie, and um, whoโs on guard dutyโTeriyaki?โTeri, take these storm spirits down to cell block Fourteen E, will you?โ
A harpy swooped out of nowhere, snatched the golden bag, and spiraled into the abyss.
Aeolus grinned at Jason. โNow, sorry about that kill-on-sight business. But gods, I really was mad, wasnโt I?โ His face suddenly darkened, and his suit did the same, the lapels flashing with lightning. โYou know โฆ I remember now. Almost seemed like a voice was telling me to give that order. A little cold tingle on the back of my neck.โ
Jason tensed. A cold tingle on the back of his neck โฆ Why did that sound so familiar? โA โฆ um, voice in your head, sir?โ
โYes. How odd. Mellie,ย shouldย we kill them?โ
โNo, sir,โ she said patiently. โThey just brought us the storm spirits, which makes everything all right.โ
โOf course.โ Aeolus laughed. โSorry. Mellie, letโs send the demigods something nice. A box of chocolates, perhaps.โ
โA box of chocolates toย everyย demigod in the world, sir?โ โNo, too expensive. Never mind. Wait, itโs time! Iโm on!โ
Aeolus flew off toward the blue screen as newscast music started to play.
Jason looked at Piper and Leo, who seemed just as confused as he was. โMellie,โ he said, โis he โฆ always like that?โ
She smiled sheepishly. โWell, you know what they say. If you donโt like his mood, wait five minutes. That expression โwhichever way the wind blowsโโthat was based on him.โ
โAnd that thing about the sea monster,โ Jason said. โWasย I here before?โ
Mellie blushed. โIโm sorry, I donโt remember. Iโm Mr. Aeolusโs new assistant. Iโve been with him longer than most, but stillโnot that long.โ
โHow long do his assistants usually last?โ Piper asked. โ
Oh โฆโ Mellie thought for a moment. โIโve been doing this for โฆ twelve hours?โ
A voice blared from floating speakers: โAnd now, weather every twelve minutes! Hereโs your forecaster for Olympian Weatherโthe OW! channelโAeolus!โ
Lights blazed on Aeolus, who was now standing in front of the blue screen. His smile was unnaturally white, and he looked like heโd had so much caffeine his face was about to explode.
โHello, Olympus! Aeolus, master of the winds here, with weather every twelve! Weโll have a low-pressure system moving over Florida today, so expect milder temperatures since Demeter wishes to spare the citrus farmers!โ He gestured at the blue screen, but when Jason checked the monitors, he saw that a digital image was being projected behind Aeolus, so it looked like he was standing in front of a U.S. map with animated smiley suns and frowny storm clouds. โAlong the eastern seaboardโoh, hold on.โ He tapped his earpiece. โSorry, folks! Poseidon is angry with Miami today, so it looks like that Florida freeze is back on! Sorry, Demeter. Over in the Midwest, Iโm not sure what St. Louis did to offend Zeus, but you can expect winter storms! Boreas himself is being called down to punish the area with ice. Bad news, Missouri! No, wait. Hephaestus feels sorry for central Missouri, so you all will have much more moderate temperatures and sunny skies.โ
Aeolus kept going like thatโforecasting each area of the country and changing his prediction two or three times as he got messages over his earpieceโthe gods apparently putting in orders for various winds and weather.
โThis canโt be right,โ Jason whispered. โWeather isnโt this random.โ Mellie smirked. โAnd how often are the mortal weathermen right?
They talk about fronts and air pressure and moisture, but the weather
surprises them all the time. At least Aeolus tells usย whyย itโs so unpredictable. Very hard job, trying to appease all the gods at once. Itโs enough to drive anyone โฆโ
She trailed off, but Jason knew what she meant.ย Mad.ย Aeolus was completely mad.
โAnd thatโs the weather,โ Aeolus concluded. โSee you in twelve minutes, because Iโm sure itโll change!โ
The lights shut off, the video monitors went back to random coverage, and just for a moment, Aeolusโs face sagged with weariness. Then he
seemed to remember he had guests, and he put a smile back on.
โSo, you brought me some rogue storm spirits,โ Aeolus said. โI suppose โฆ thanks! And did you want something else? I assume so. Demigods always do.โ
Mellie said, โUm, sir, this is Zeusโs son.โ
โYes, yes. I know that. I said I remembered him from before.โ โBut, sir, theyโre here fromย Olympus.โ
Aeolus looked stunned. Then he laughed so abruptly, Jason almost jumped into the chasm. โYou mean youโre here on behalf of your father this time? Finally! Iย knewย they would send someone to renegotiate my contract!โ
โUm, what?โ Jason asked.
โOh, thank goodness!โ Aeolus sighed with relief. โItโs been what, three thousand years since Zeus made me master of the winds. Not that Iโm ungrateful, of course! But really, my contract is so vague. Obviously Iโm immortal, but โmaster of the winds.โ What does that mean? Am I a nature spirit? A demigod? A god? Iย wantย to be god of the winds, because the benefits areย soย much better. Can we start with that?โ
Jason looked at his friends, mystified.
โDude,โ Leo said, โyou think weโre here to promote you?โ
โYou are, then?โ Aeolus grinned. His business suit turned completely blueโnot a cloud in the fabric. โMarvelous! I mean, I think Iโve shown quite a bit of initiative with the weather channel, eh? And of course Iโm in the press all the time. So many books have been written about me:ย Into Thin Air,ย Up in the Air,ย Gone with the Windโโ
โEr, I donโt think those are about you,โ Jason said, before he noticed Mellie shaking her head.
โNonsense,โ Aeolus said. โMellie, theyโre biographies of me, arenโt they?โ
โAbsolutely, sir,โ she squeaked.
โThere, you see? I donโt read. Who has time? But obviously the mortals love me. So, weโll change my official title toย godย of the winds. Then, about salary and staffโโ
โSir,โ Jason said, โweโre not from Olympus.โ
Aeolus blinked. โButโโ
โIโm the son of Zeus, yes,โ Jason said, โbut weโre not here to negotiate your contract. Weโre on a quest and we need your help.โ
Aeolusโs expression hardened. โLike last time? Likeย everyย hero who comes here? Demigods! Itโs always aboutย you, isnโt it?โ
โSir, please, I donโt remember last time, but if you helped me once beforeโโ
โIโm always helping! Well, sometimes Iโm destroying, but mostly Iโm helping, and sometimes Iโm asked to do both at the same time! Why, Aeneas, the first of your kindโโ
โMy kind?โ Jason asked. โYou mean, demigods?โ
โOh, please!โ Aeolus said. โI mean yourย lineย of demigods. You know, Aeneas, son of Venusโthe only surviving hero of Troy. When the Greeks burned down his city, he escaped to Italy, where he founded the kingdom that would eventually become Rome, blah, blah, blah.ย Thatโsย what I meant.โ
โI donโt get it,โ Jason admitted.
Aeolus rolled his eyes. โThe point being, I was thrown in the middle of that conflict, too! Juno calls up: โOh, Aeolus, destroy Aeneasโs ships for me. I donโt like him.โ Then Neptune says, โNo, you donโt! Thatโs my territory. Calm the winds.โ Then Juno is like, โNo, wreck his ships, or Iโll tell Jupiter youโre uncooperative!โ Do you think itโs easy juggling requests like that?โ
โNo,โ Jason said. โI guess not.โ
โAnd donโt get me started on Amelia Earhart! Iโmย stillย getting angry calls from Olympus about knockingย herย out of the sky!โ
โWe just want information,โ Piper said in her most calming voice. โWe hear you know everything.โ
Aeolus straightened his lapels and looked slightly mollified. โWell โฆย thatโsย true, of course. For instance, I know thatย thisย business hereโโhe waggled his fingers at the three of themโโthis harebrained scheme of Junoโs to bring you all together is likely to end in bloodshed. As for you, Piper McLean, I know your father is in serious trouble.โ He held out his hand, and a scrap of paper fluttered into his grasp. It was a photo of Piper
with a guy who mustโve been her dad. His faceย didย look familiar. Jason was pretty sure heโd seen him in some movies.
Piper took the photo. Her hands were shaking. โThisโthis is from his wallet.โ
โYes,โ Aeolus said. โAll things lost in the wind eventually come to me.
The photo blew away when the Earthborn captured him.โ โThe what?โ Piper asked.
Aeolus waved aside the question and narrowed his eyes at Leo. โNow,ย you,ย son of Hephaestus โฆ yes, I see your future.โ Another paper fell into the wind godโs handsโan old tattered drawing done in crayons.
Leo took it as if it might be coated in poison. He staggered backward. โLeo?โ Jason said. โWhat is it?โ
โSomething IโI drew when I was a kid.โ He folded it quickly and put it in his coat. โItโs โฆ yeah, itโs nothing.โ
Aeolus laughed. โReally? Just the key to your success! Now, where were we? Ah, yes, you wanted information. Are you sure about that? Sometimes information can be dangerous.โ
He smiled at Jason like he was issuing a challenge. Behind him, Mellie shook her head in warning.
โYeah,โ Jason said. โWe need to find the lair of Enceladus.โ
Aeolusโs smile melted. โThe giant? Why would you want to go there?
Heโs horrible! He doesnโt even watch my program!โ
Piper held up the photo. โAeolus, heโs got my father. We need to rescue him and find out where Hera is being held captive.โ
โNow,ย thatโsย impossible,โ Aeolus said. โEvenย Iย canโt see that, and believe me, Iโve tried. Thereโs a veil of magic over Heraโs locationโvery strong, impossible to locate.โ
โSheโs at a place called the Wolf House,โ Jason said.
โHold on!โ Aelous put a hand to his forehead and closed his eyes. โIโm getting something! Yes, sheโs at a place called the Wolf House! Sadly, I donโt know where that is.โ
โEnceladus does,โ Piper persisted. โIf you help us find him, we could get the location of the goddessโโ
โYeah,โ Leo said, catching on. โAnd if we save her, sheโd be really grateful to youโโ
โAnd Zeus might promote you,โ Jason finished.
Aeolusโs eyebrows crept up. โA promotionโand all you want from me is the giantโs location?โ
โWell, if you could get us there, too,โ Jason amended, โthat would be great.โ
Mellie clapped her hands in excitement. โOh, he could do that! He often sends helpful windsโโ
โMellie, quiet!โ Aeolus snapped. โI have half a mind to fire you for letting these people in under false pretenses.โ
Her face paled. โYes, sir. Sorry, sir.โ
โIt wasnโt her fault,โ Jason said. โBut about that help โฆโ
Aelous tilted his head as if thinking. Then Jason realized the wind lord was listening to voices in his earpiece.
โWell โฆ Zeus approves,โ Aeolus muttered. โHe says โฆ he says it would be better if you could avoid saving her until after the weekend, because he has a big party plannedโOw! Thatโs Aphrodite yelling at him, reminding him that the solstice starts at dawn. She says I should help you. And Hephaestusโฆ yes. Hmm. Very rare they agree on anything. Hold on
โฆโ
Jason smiled at his friends. Finally, they were having some good luck.
Their godly parents were standing up for them.
Back toward the entrance, Jason heard a loud belch. Coach Hedge waddled in from the lobby, grass all over his face. Mellie saw him coming across the makeshift floor and caught her breath. โWho isย that?โ
Jason stifled a cough. โThat? Thatโs just Coach Hedge. Uh, Gleeson Hedge. Heโs our โฆโ Jason wasnโt sure what to call him:ย teacher,ย friend,ย problem?
โOur guide.โ
โHeโsย soย goatly,โ Mellie murmured.
Behind her, Piper poofed out her cheeks, pretending to vomit.
โWhatโs up, guys?โ Hedge trotted over. โWow, nice place. Oh! Sod squares.โ
โCoach, you just ate,โ Jason said. โAnd weโre using the sod as a floor.
This is, ah, Mellieโโ
โAnย aura.โ Hedge smiled winningly. โBeautiful as a summer breeze.โ Mellie blushed.
โAnd Aeolus here was just about to help us,โ Jason said.
โYes,โ the wind lord muttered. โIt seems so. Youโll find Enceladus on Mount Diablo.โ
โDevil Mountain?โ Leo asked. โThat doesnโt sound good.โ
โI remember that place!โ Piper said. โI went there once with my dad.
Itโs just east of San Francisco Bay.โ
โThe Bay Area again?โ The coach shook his head. โNot good. Not good at all.โ
โNow โฆโ Aeolus began to smile. โAs to getting you thereโโ
Suddenly his face went slack. He bent over and tapped his earpiece as if it were malfunctioning. When he straightened again, his eyes were wild. Despite the makeup, he looked like an old manโan old, very frightened man. โShe hasnโt spoke to me for centuries. I canโtโyes, yes I understand.โ
He swallowed, regarding Jason as if he had suddenly turned into a giant cockroach. โIโm sorry, son of Jupiter. New orders. You all have to die.โ
Mellie squeaked. โButโbut, sir! Zeus said to help them. Aphrodite, Hephaestusโโ
โMellie!โ Aeolus snapped. โYour job is already on the line. Besides, there are some orders that transcend even the wishes of the gods, especially when it comes to the forces of nature.โ
โWhoseย orders?โ Jason said. โZeus will fire you if you donโt help us!โ โI doubt it.โ Aeolus flicked his wrist, and far below them, a cell door
opened in the pit. Jason could hear storm spirits screaming out of it,
spiraling up toward them, howling for blood.
โEven Zeus understands the order of things,โ Aeolus said. โAnd ifย sheย is wakingโby all the godsโshe cannot be denied. Good-bye, heroes. Iโm terribly sorry, but Iโll have to make this quick. Iโm back on the air in four minutes.โ
Jason summoned his sword. Coach Hedge pulled out his club. Mellie the aura yelled, โNo!โ
She dived at their feet just as the storm spirits hit with hurricane force, blasting the floor to pieces, shredding the carpet samples and marble and linoleum into what shouldโve been lethal projectiles, had Mellieโs robes not spread out like a shield and absorbed the brunt of the impact. The five of them fell into the pit, and Aeolus screamed above them, โMellie, you areย soย fired!โ
โQuick,โ Mellie yelled. โSon of Zeus, do you have any power over the air?โ
โA little!โ
โThen help me, or youโre all dead!โ Mellie grabbed his hand, and an electric charge went through Jasonโs arm. He understood what she needed. They had to control their fall and head for one of the open tunnels. The storm spirits were following them down, closing rapidly, bringing with them a cloud of deadly shrapnel.
Jason grabbed Piperโs hand. โGroup hug!โ
Hedge, Leo, and Piper tried to huddle together, hanging on to Jason and Mellie as they fell.
โThis is NOT GOOD!โ Leo yelled.
โBring it on, gas bags!โ Hedge yelled up at the storm spirits. โIโll pulverize you!โ
โHeโs magnificent,โ Mellie sighed. โConcentrate?โ Jason prompted. โRight!โ she said.
They channeled the wind so their fall became more of a tumble into the nearest open chute. Still, they slammed into the tunnel at painful speed and went rolling over each other down a steep vent that was not designed for people. There was no way they could stop.
Mellieโs robes billowed around her. Jason and the others clung to her desperately, and they began to slow down, but the storm spirits were screaming into the tunnel behind them.
โCanโtโholdโlong,โ Mellie warned. โStay together! When the winds hitโโ
โYouโre doing great, Mellie,โ Hedge said. โMy own mama was an
aura, you know. She couldnโt have done better herself.โ โIris-message me?โ Mellie pleaded.
Hedge winked.
โCould you guys plan your date later?โ Piper screamed. โLook!โ
Behind them, the tunnel was turning dark. Jason could feel his ears pop as the pressure built.
โCanโt hold them,โ Mellie warned. โBut Iโll try to shield you, do you one more favor.โ
โThanks, Mellie,โ Jason said. โI hope you get a new job.โ
She smiled, and then dissolved, wrapping them in a warm gentle breeze. Then the real winds hit, shooting them into the sky so fast, Jason blacked out.
