Chapter no 45

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

That Jesiba was able to clear the crowd without so much as a word was testament to her grip on this place, this House.

Ithan found himself torn between looking at Hypaxia and the Astronomerโ€”and avoiding both of their gazes.

The Astronomer waited until the crowd had left before saying to the witch-queen, โ€œIf you know where the wolf is and withhold that information, then the law says youย areโ€”โ€

โ€œNo law applies here,โ€ Hypaxia cut in, โ€œas the Fendyr heir was not a legal slave. Just as you said.โ€ Gods, Ithan wished he had one fraction of her steadiness, that serene intelligence. Hypaxia went on, โ€œSo there was nothing for Ithan Holstrom to steal. He merely allowed a free civitas to make a choice about whether to remain in that wretched tank โ€ฆ or to leave.โ€

And then heโ€™d killed her.

Jesiba was giving him a warning look, as if to say,ย Do not fucking breathe a word about that. Ithan returned her a look, as if to say,ย Do you think Iโ€™m that dumb?

She glanced pointedly at hisย CCU SUNBALLย T-shirt.

He rolled his eyes and turned to the witch-queen facing off against the Astronomer.

โ€œThat wolf cost me untold sums of gold. The loss of one mysticโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll pay it,โ€ Ithan said hoarsely.ย His parents had made some wise investments before their deaths. He had more money than he knew what to do with.

โ€œI require ten million gold marks.โ€

Ithan burst out coughing. He was well off, butโ€”

โ€œPaid,โ€ Jesiba said coolly.

Ithan whirled to her, but the sorceress was smiling blandly at the Astronomer. โ€œAdd it to my monthly tab.โ€

The Astronomer glared at her, then at Ithan, and finally atย Hypaxia, who looked at him with icy disdain. But he only spat on the ground and stalked out, long stringy hair flowing behind him.

In the silence, Jesiba faced Hypaxia and said, โ€œI called you days ago and told you to comeย immediately. Is your broom not working?โ€

Ithan whirled on Jesiba. โ€œThisย is the necromancer you had in mind?โ€

Honestly, he didnโ€™t know why he hadnโ€™t thought of it himself.ย Heโ€™d just worked with her, for fuckโ€™s sake, when theyโ€™d tried to conjure Connor at the Autumn Equinox. Maybe because itย hadnโ€™tย worked and the Under-King had arrived instead, heโ€™d written her off, butโ€”

โ€œHypaxiaโ€™s father was the finest necromancer Iโ€™ve ever known,โ€ Jesiba said, crossing her arms. โ€œShe has his gift. If thereโ€™s anyone to trust with your task, Holstrom, itโ€™s her.โ€

Hypaxiaโ€™s browsย lifted in faint surpriseโ€”as if the praise was unusual. But she said to Jesiba, โ€œWe should talk in your office.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

Hypaxia seemed to debate whether to answer, but finally said, โ€œYou want to know what delayed me these days? What I feared this fall has come to pass. Morganthia Dragas and her coven have staged a coup in the name of what they consider the preservation of witchkindโ€™s old ways.ย I am Queen of the Valbaran Witches no longer.โ€ She touched her breast, where her usual golden pin of Cthona was broken in two. โ€œTo escape their executioners, I have sworn fealty to the House of Flame and Shadow.โ€

Lidia had let Renki decide on the place for this early-morning meeting. Somewhere neutral, somewhere private, somewhere โ€œchill,โ€ as the mer male had described it.

Lidia wished sheย had someย chillย herself as she sat on the couch in the quiet student rec areaโ€”Director Kagani had closed it to everyone else for an hourโ€”and looked at her sons. They sat on the opposite couch, which was stained and sagging, befitting a student lounge.

Davit had been called away for work late last night, so only Renki had come. The male now sat at the beverage counter on the opposite end of theย room. Giving them space. An illusion of privacy.

She wished heโ€™d sat with them.

There was a good chance Morven wouldnโ€™t let them leave Avallen alive. Sheโ€™d needed to see her boys before she left, just one more time, but that didnโ€™t mean this was comfortable.

Ace leaned back against the cushions, arms crossed, staring at the TV blasting sunball highlights above the foosball table. But Brannย surveyed her frankly, gaze bright with his keen intellect and fighting nature. A warrior indeed. He said without preamble, โ€œWhy did you want to meet us so early?โ€

Lidia subtly wiped her sweaty palms on the legs of her tactical bodysuit. She knew both boys marked the motion. โ€œI thought I might make myself available to you, in case you had any questions about me. My past.โ€

Sheโ€™d faced down horrorsย without flinching, and yet thisโ€”this had her heart thundering.

Brannโ€™s mouth twisted to the side as he thought about it. Without taking his eyes off the TV, Actaeon said, โ€œItโ€™s because sheโ€™s leaving.โ€

Too smart for his own good. Lidia looked at him, though Ace wouldnโ€™t acknowledge her, and said, โ€œYes. Today.โ€

Brann glanced between them. โ€œWhere?โ€

Ace answered before she could. โ€œSheโ€™s not goingย to tell you. Donโ€™t bother asking. She doesnโ€™t know what the wordย honestyย means.โ€

Lidia clenched her jaw. โ€œI wish I could tell you. But our mission relies on secrecy.โ€

Ace slid his eyes to her then. โ€œAnd us kids will go blabbing your location to everyone, right?โ€

Gods help her. โ€œI wish I could tell you,โ€ she repeated.

Brann asked, voice thick, โ€œAre you coming back?โ€

Lidia said frankly, โ€œIย hope so.โ€

Actaeon returned to the TV. โ€œYouโ€™ve managed to slither out of every scrape so far. I donโ€™t see why this would be any different.โ€

The words hit like a blow to some soft, unguarded part of her.

Brann gave his twin a warning glare. โ€œCome on, Ace.โ€ Clearly, theyโ€™d had some sort of conversation beforehand. About how theyโ€™d behave.

And clearly, Ace hated her.

Fine. She could live withย that. He was safe, and loved. For that, she could endure his resentment.

โ€œWeโ€™re at war,โ€ Lidia told them. โ€œAnd itโ€™s about to get uglier. I cannot tell you where I am going, but I can tell you I may not come back. Every time I venture out, especially now that my enemies know the truth about me, there is a good chance I will not return.โ€

Ace snapped, โ€œAre we supposed to feel bad and cry for ourย mommy?โ€

It took all her will not to break down. Mustering that coolness sheโ€™d perfected over the years, she said, โ€œYou claimed I didnโ€™t know what honesty was a moment ago. Well, Iโ€™m giving it to you. If you interpret this as manipulation, I cannot help that. But I wanted to see youโ€”both of youโ€”before I left today. To say goodbye.โ€

Brann again glanced between them. Then said, โ€œI guess my biggestย question is why. Why you left us here.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t have a choice,โ€ she said plainly, keenly aware of Renki across the room. โ€œIt was either leave you here, safe and with people who would love you, or risk bringing you into a world that would have offered the opposite. I โ€ฆ Iโ€™ve thought about you every single day since.โ€

This was veering into territory she wanted to avoid. She hadnโ€™t planned onย approaching it during this visit. Maybe ever. And she knew that if she stayed for one more moment, sheโ€™d likely say moreย than was wise, things she wasnโ€™t ready to say aloudโ€”things the boys might not be ready to hear.

Instead, with slightly trembling fingers, she pulled her ruby ring from her finger and laid it on the table between them. โ€œI want you to have this.โ€ She fought past the tightnessย in her throat. โ€œItโ€™s an heirloom of my fatherโ€™s household. Heโ€™s not anyone worth remembering, but that ruby โ€ฆโ€ She couldnโ€™t bear to see what expression might be on their faces. โ€œItโ€™s very valuable. You can sell it to pay for university, housing โ€ฆ when youโ€™re old enough, I mean. If you ever leave this ship. Not that you should.โ€ She was rambling. She swallowed, and at last looked at them. Aceโ€™s faceย was blank, but Brann was staring with wide eyes at the obscenely huge ruby. โ€œOr if you want to keep it,โ€ she said quietly, โ€œthatโ€™s fine, too.โ€

She wished she had something else to leave them, some other piece of her that wasnโ€™t connected to the monster whoโ€™d sired her, but this was all she possessed.

Task complete, Lidia stood, and Renki glanced her way. She nodded to him.

She faced her sonsโ€”fierceย and strong and capable, no thanks to her. โ€œI know it wonโ€™t matter to you,โ€ she said, staring at Ace as he again pointedly watched the TV, โ€œbut Iโ€™m so very proud of how you turned out. Of the males you are, and are still becoming. I look at you both and know that โ€ฆ that I made the right choice.โ€ She smiled softly at Brann.

Brannโ€™s eyes gleamed. โ€œThanks for that. For giving us our parents.โ€ Heย motioned to Renki. Lidia bowed her head. โ€œGood luck out there,โ€ Brann said. โ€œWherever youโ€™re going.โ€

She put a hand on her heart.

Brann jabbed Ace with an elbow. Ace slid his golden eyes back to her and said, โ€œBye.โ€

Lidia kept her hand on her heart, tapping it once, and turned away.

She left, not knowing where she was going, only that she had to keep moving or else sheโ€™d find some place toย crumple up and die.

She walked through the gleaming halls of the ship. Walked and walked and walked, and did not let herself look back.

Ithan only waited until the door to Jesibaโ€™s office shut before he whirled on Hypaxia.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Ithan demanded.

Jesiba had warned him before setting off through the halls toย keep quiet, and heโ€™d obeyed, even while theyโ€™d stopped in the dark diningย hall for the former witch-queen to get some food. Apparently, she hadnโ€™t eaten in daysโ€”that alone had banked his rising impatience. But now, safely behind the locked doors to Jesibaโ€™s office, theyโ€™d get answers.

โ€œItโ€™s as I said,โ€ Hypaxia replied, voice a bit flat as she laid the tray of food on the table. โ€œMy motherโ€™s former general, Morganthia, had her forces surround my fortress. They gaveย me their terms: yield the cloudberry crown or die. I offered the crown, but they somehow heardย die.โ€

โ€œCan they do that?โ€ Ithan demanded. โ€œJust โ€ฆ kick you out?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Jesiba said, claiming her leather desk chair. โ€œThe witch-dynasties were founded in fairness, in the right to remove an unfit ruler. It was meant to protect the people, but Morganthia has used it to her advantage.โ€

Hypaxia sankย into one of the chairs before Jesibaโ€™s desk and rubbed her eyes with her thumb and forefinger. It was the most normal-looking gesture Ithan had ever seen the queen make. โ€œMorganthiaโ€™s first act as queen was to order my execution. Her second was to undo my motherโ€™s animation spell for my tutors.โ€ She added at Ithanโ€™s raised brows, โ€œThey areโ€”wereโ€”ghosts.โ€

How it was possible, he had no idea, butย he still said, โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

She nodded her thanks, voice weighted with grief. โ€œThe spell was bound to the crown. And once that crown was hers โ€ฆโ€ She looked up at Jesiba, her face full of pleading.

โ€œYou mourn for three people long dead,โ€ Jesiba said coolly, and Ithan hated her for it. โ€œMourn for your people instead, now beholden to an unhinged queen and her coven.โ€

Hypaxia straightened. โ€œYouย sound as if you think I should have fought her.โ€

โ€œYou should have,โ€ Jesiba shot back, dark fire flashing in her eyes. A seed of Apollionโ€™s powerโ€”transformed into something new. โ€œDid you even try to hold on to your crown before conceding?โ€

โ€œI would have died.โ€

โ€œAnd retained your honor. Your mother would have been proud.โ€

โ€œA bloodless coup was a better alternative to fighting, to bringing inย innocents to die in my nameโ€”โ€

โ€œOnce she gets her reign underway, Morganthia will spill far more blood than what might have been shed for you.โ€ Jesiba closed her eyes and shook her head with pure disgust.

โ€œI did not come here for your judgment, Jesiba,โ€ Hypaxia hissed, wilder than Ithan had ever witnessed her.

โ€œAs I am second in command of this House, you now answer to me.โ€

Ithan reined inย the shock that reared through him. Jesiba wasย secondย in command of the House of Flame and Shadow?

And she thoughtย Hypaxiaย was the best necromancer for Ithan? When she had all those others at her disposal?

โ€œAnd,โ€ Jesiba went on to Hypaxia, heedless of Ithanโ€™s surprise, โ€œas someone who spent centuries with the witches, I have insights worthy of your attention.โ€

Hypaxia snapped, โ€œYou abandonedย our people.โ€

โ€œSo did you.โ€

Fraught, miserable silence filled the room. Hypaxia took one biteโ€”just oneโ€”of her ham-and-cheese sandwich.

Hypaxia didnโ€™t know, Ithan realized, what Jesiba was, deep down. She still thought her a witch defector. โ€œLook,โ€ he said, โ€œI know you guys have some baggage to sort out, but โ€ฆ I do have a pressing matter.โ€

The former witch-queen turned to him, and her eyes softened.ย She took another bite of her sandwich, and said after sheโ€™d swallowed, โ€œJesiba apprised me of the situation when she called. I must admit, I was surprised by my sisterโ€™s involvement. But I am sorry for what happened.โ€

He bowed his head, shame washing through him.

Hypaxia went on, finishing off the sandwich in a few more bites, โ€œBut necromancy is no easy thing, Ithan.โ€

โ€œI remember,โ€ he said.

Her lips thinned. Yeah, she remembered every minute of their little encounter with the Under-King, too. But Hypaxia said, eyes bright with determination, โ€œI will try to help you.โ€

The breath nearly went out of him.

Hypaxia added, โ€œIโ€™ll begin tomorrow. Today I have obligations. Oaths to swear.โ€

Oaths to the Under-King, whoโ€™d been impressed enough by her skill at the Autumn Equinox that heโ€™d toldย her heโ€™d welcome her here. Even Morganthia Dragas would hesitate before tangling with the Under-King.

โ€œI donโ€™t have much time,โ€ Ithan said.

โ€œThese oaths cannot wait,โ€ Jesiba said. She pointed to the door of her office, an order to Hypaxia. โ€œThey must be sworn at the Black Dock before sunup, girl. You had your last meal. Now go.โ€

Hypaxia didnโ€™t hesitate. She left, robes flowing behind her, andย shut the door.

โ€œFool,โ€ Jesiba said, slumping in her chair. โ€œInnocent, idealistic fool.โ€

Ithan stayed still, wondering if sheโ€™d forgotten he was there.

But Jesiba raised her eyes to him. โ€œSheโ€™s always been that way. Worse than Quinlan. Letting her heart lead her around like a dog on a leash. I blame her mother for keeping her locked away. No wonder Celestina swept her off her feet whenโ€”โ€

Ithanย started. โ€œWait. Hypaxia and Celestina?โ€ Jesiba nodded. Ithan angled his head to one side. โ€œThe Hind said that Celestina was the reason the Asteri knew Bryce was headed for the Eternal City. Hypaxia wouldnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s over now,โ€ Jesiba said shortly. โ€œI have it on good authority that Hypaxia was โ€ฆ not pleased when she found out that Celestina had sold out your friends. But even that betrayal didnโ€™tย open Hypaxiaโ€™s eyes enough to see Morganthiaโ€™s move coming.โ€

โ€œShe saw it,โ€ Ithan said. โ€œShe came here this spring, asking Ruhn for protection from Morganthia. I guarded herโ€”โ€

โ€œProtection,โ€ย Jesiba snapped. โ€œGuarding. Notย acting. She knew Morganthia was a threat and chose to wait for her to attack rather than strike her own blow against her. Rather than find allies, she played medwitch in theย city, made love to that Archangel. Rather than gather power, she ran to a Fae Prince and a wolf to shield her.โ€ She shook her head again. โ€œHecuba meant to protect her all these years by keeping her isolated from the corrupt covens. She hobbled her in the process.โ€ Jesiba crossed her arms and stared at nothing, fury and disdain tightening her face.

Ithan dared ask, โ€œWhy did you defect from theย witches?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t like the direction they were headed.โ€

โ€œWas this when Hecuba was queen?โ€

โ€œLong before that. The witches have been in decline for generations. A magical and moral rot.โ€ She leaned her head against the back of her chair. โ€œNaรฏve girl,โ€ Jesiba murmured to herself.

โ€œWhat sort of oaths does Hypaxia need to swear at the Black Dock before sunrise?โ€

โ€œOld ones.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

โ€œThe mysteries of the House of Flame and Shadow are not for you to know.โ€

โ€œWill Hypaxia โ€ฆ change?โ€

โ€œNo. Her oaths are nothing like those the Reapers swear. The establishment of allegiance is a legal process, but one that must be honored as the Under-King has decreed.โ€

The Under-King โ€ฆ whom Jesiba served as second in command. โ€œI didnโ€™t know you were so important here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m flattered. And beforeย you ask, no, Quinlan isnโ€™t aware. People in this House donโ€™t talk. But the City Heads know.โ€

โ€œAnd the Astronomer โ€ฆ he knows.โ€ She nodded. โ€œWhatโ€™s your deal with him? You said you have a monthly bill.โ€ He blew out a breath. โ€œFuck, I canโ€™t pay you all that moneyโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a tax write-off for the House,โ€ Jesiba said, waving a hand.ย โ€œAnd Iโ€™m growing tired of all these questions from you. Youโ€™re askingย things you have no right to know.โ€

โ€œThen stop telling me so much.โ€

She smirked. โ€œYouโ€™re not as boring as you seem.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m flattered,โ€ he echoed.

Jesiba laughed quietly. And then said, โ€œA few centuries after Apollion changed me, he heard whispers that I had โ€ฆ powers. Being a lazy wretch, he sent his brother Aidas to investigate. And presumably to kill me if I was indeed a threat.โ€

She spokeย the names of the demon princes like they were people she knew well.

โ€œBut Aidas found that I posed no threat, and discovered that I still had the library and remained defiant to his brotherโ€™s demands to reveal its so-called power. In the strange way of things, Aidas and I became friends, of a sort. We still are. I suppose itโ€™s because weโ€™re so used to each other now. Itโ€™s been โ€ฆ a long time.โ€

โ€œSo what did he report to Apollion?โ€

โ€œThat I was to be respected, but left alone.โ€

โ€œAnd did Apollion listen?โ€

A half shrug. โ€œHe sends Aidas to check in every once in a while.โ€

โ€œWhat does this have to do with the Astronomer?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve paid the Astronomer for years now to look for a way to undo Apollionโ€™s grip on my soul.โ€

Disgust roiled through him. โ€œSo you pay him and he does your bidding?โ€

โ€œI pay him,โ€ she said blandly, โ€œbut he also stands to benefit from any discovery.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œHe wants to find the answer so he might use it to become young himself. He is humanโ€”or used to be, before so much foul magic tainted his soul. He fears death more than anything. He stands to gain a great deal should he succeed in his search. I suppose weโ€™re two miserable creatures feeding off each other.โ€ย She cut Ithan a look. โ€œHe might seem frail, but heโ€™s slippery. Heโ€™ll be seeking other ways to fuck you over.โ€

He nodded to where heโ€™d replaced the Godslayer Rifle on the wall. โ€œWould you have given me the order to kill him today?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Jesiba said. โ€œThe rifle was just a threat. I still need him.โ€

โ€œI think scientists call it a symbiotic relationship.โ€

โ€œWell, itโ€™s one Iโ€™ve been building towardย long before he came into existence.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™ve been using this creep and his hold on innocentsโ€”โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t seem to have any qualms about using him when you went for information about your brother.โ€

The Astronomer must have told her about that visit. Ithan pressed on. โ€œCan you โ€ฆ elaborate?โ€ At her flat look, he added, โ€œPlease? Why did you even use the Astronomer in the first place?โ€

โ€œI thoughtย it was the cats who had a problem with curiosity.โ€

โ€œBlame it on the part of me that chose to be a history major in college.โ€

Her lips curled upward, but she sighed at the ceiling and said, โ€œIn my own research over the millennia, I learned that dragon fire is one of the few things that can make a Prince of Hel balk.โ€

โ€œYou meant to use it againstย Apollion?โ€ Ithan couldnโ€™t help but gape at herย sheer audacity.

She studied her manicured nails. โ€œI thought it might be a good โ€ฆ negotiating tool.โ€

Ithan let out an impressed laugh. โ€œWow. So what happened?โ€

โ€œRumor spread in the city that the Astronomer had possession of a dragon. I sought him out and offered to buy Ariadne on the spot.โ€ She crossed her arms again. โ€œThe bastard wouldnโ€™t sell her, not for anything in the world. But I realizedย that day that I might have another opportunity on my hands: I could use his mystics to hunt in Hel for answers on how to free me, and have the mystics guarded by Ariadne while they did so.โ€

โ€œBut you said you wanted to wait to โ€ฆ not be young until the books were safe.โ€

โ€œYes. But when that time comes, I want the solution in hand.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œSo I donโ€™t talk myself out of it.โ€ He felt, more thanย saw, theย weight of all those years bowing her shoulders. โ€œYouโ€™re not like most wolves Iโ€™ve known.โ€

โ€œIs that an insult or a compliment?โ€ He honestly couldnโ€™t tell.

She uncrossed her arms and drummed her fingers on the desk. โ€œThereโ€™s a lot you donโ€™t know, Ithan Holstrom, about the truth. Too much for me to delve into here and now.โ€ Her fingers halted, and her gaze simmered with ancient pain andย anger. โ€œBut it was the wolf packs who reached Parthos first. Who started the slaughter and burnings. It was the wolf packs, led by Asteri-bred bloodhounds, who hunted down my sisters. Iโ€™ve never forgotten that.โ€

Ithanโ€™s stomach churned at the shameful history of his people, but he asked, โ€œBred?โ€

A wry smile. โ€œThe gift already existed amongst the wolves, but the Asteri encouraged it. Bred itย into certain lines. They still do.โ€

โ€œLike Danika.โ€

Jesibaโ€™s fingers resumed their drumming. โ€œThe Fendyrs have been a โ€ฆ carefully cultivated line for the Asteri.โ€

โ€œHow so?โ€

She fixed her blazing eyes on him. This female had lived through all of Midgardโ€™s Asteri history. He could hardly wrap his mind around it. โ€œDidnโ€™t you ever wonder why the Fendyrs are so dominant? Generation after generation?โ€

โ€œGenetics.โ€

โ€œYes, genetics bred by the Asteri. Sabine and Mordoc were ordered to breed.โ€

โ€œBut Sabine took the title from her brotherโ€”โ€

โ€œAt whose urging? Sheโ€™s an angry, small-minded female. Her brother was smarter, but clearly no male of worth, if he sold his daughter to the Astronomer. He was likely deemed unfit by the Asteri, who coaxed Sabine into challenging him. And when Sabineโ€™s dominanceย won out, they made sure Mordoc was sent to produce a line of more โ€ฆย competentย Fendyrs.โ€

โ€œWell, Micah fucked that up for them.โ€

โ€œAnd who do you think pulled Micahโ€™s strings?โ€

Ithan was glad he was sitting. โ€œYou think the Asteri had Micah kill Danika? After all that trouble to breed her into existence?โ€ย Never mind that Connor and the Pack of Devils had been destroyed as a result of that schemingโ€”

โ€œI think Danika was reckless and willful, and the Asteri knew they could never control her as they could Sabine. I think they realized that with Danika, theyโ€™d produced a wolf so powerful she rivaled the ones I faced in the First Wars.ย Trueย wolves. And she was not on their side. She had to be eliminated.โ€

Ithan sagged in his seat, but then a thought struck him. โ€œThe Under-King told Hypaxia andย me that Connor โ€ฆ that the Under-King had been given a command not to touch my brother. Why?โ€

Jesibaโ€™s face was unreadable. โ€œI donโ€™t know. In all likelihood, itโ€™s because he was an asset in life, and remains so in death.โ€

โ€œTo who?โ€

โ€œThe Asteri. They know what Connor means to Quinlan, to youโ€”that makes his soul very, very valuable.โ€

Ithan reeled. โ€œIโ€™m nobody.โ€

Jesiba gave him a disdainful look,ย but her phone rang before she could answer him. She picked up after one trill.

She listened silently until she said in a clipped tone, โ€œFine.โ€ The sorceress hung up and fixed Ithan with a stare. โ€œYouโ€™re wanted downstairs at the morgue.โ€

โ€œYou guys have a private morgue here?โ€

She rolled her eyes. โ€œHypaxia finished her vows in record timeโ€”sheโ€™s waiting down there for you. With Sigridโ€™s corpse.โ€
