Chapter no 41

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Hunt had left his body. Maybe heโ€™d died. That wasย Bryceย in the doorway, smirking at the Ocean Queen.

She was Bryce and yet she was โ€ฆ not.

She wore her usual casual attireโ€”skintight jeans and a soft white T-shirt topped with a navy athletic jacket. Hel, she even sported those neon-pink sneakers. But there was something different in her posture, in the way the light seemed to shimmer fromย her.

She was older, somehow. Not in any line or wrinkle, but in her eyes. Like sheโ€™d been through some major shit, good and bad. Hunt recognized it, because he knew it lay etched in his own face, too.

The Ocean Queen eyed Bryce unflinchingly. โ€œAnd who, pray tell, areย you?โ€

Bryce didnโ€™t miss a beat. โ€œIโ€™m Bryce Danaan, Queen of the Valbaran Fae.โ€

Hunt let out a strangled soundโ€”a sob.

Bryceย looked at him then, scanning his face, the tears he couldnโ€™t stop. Her gaze flicked to the halo, then down to his wristโ€”but her expression yielded nothing. She just walked up to where he sat, and itย wasย her, her fucking scent, and that was her soft skin brushing his hand as she peered down into his face.

โ€œHey,โ€ he said, voice rough, eyes stinging.

Bryce squeezed his hand, tears filling her eyesย as well. โ€œHey.โ€ She blinked her tears away, twisting back to the Ocean Queen, who monitored every move. Every breath.

The Ocean Queen said to Bryce, sharkโ€™s teeth flashing, โ€œI recognize no queen bearing that title.โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ Hunt said, folding his wings behind him as he stood, coming to Bryceโ€™s side. Her fingers grazed his own, and a chill of pleasure soared through him. โ€œSheโ€™s my mate.โ€ He sketchedย a bow to the Ocean Queen. โ€œPrince Hunt Athalar Danaan, at your service. I can testify that Tharion Ketos serves my queen and mate. Any other claims to him are false.โ€

Bryce shot him a wry glance that seemed to say,ย Youโ€™re a big fucking liar, but I love you.

The Ocean Queen still surveyed Bryce with a face as cold as the northern reaches of the Haldren Sea. โ€œThat remains to be seen.โ€ She pointedย to Tharion, her fingernail made of pure nacre. โ€œTharion Ketos, you are confined to this ship until I decide otherwise.โ€

Tharion bowed his head, but remained still and silent.

The Ocean Queen lowered her finger and shot a sharp glance at Bryce. It was instinct for Huntโ€™s knees to bend, to prepare to leap between them, to shield his mate. But there was no amount of lightning, no gun, no weaponย that could save Bryce, should the Ocean Queen bring the full wrath of the sea down upon them. This deep, theyโ€™d have no chance of reaching the surface in time. That is, if their bodies didnโ€™t explode first from the pressure.

But the near-divine being declared, a shade haughtily, โ€œQueen or no queen, you are all now guests on my shipโ€”and will leave only when I bid you to.โ€

Hunt refrained fromย saying that her checkout policy wasnโ€™t very guest friendly. Especially as the Ocean Queen asked Bryce, dark eyes narrowing, โ€œDoes your father the Autumn King still draw breath?โ€

Bryce smiled slowly. โ€œFor the time being.โ€

The Ocean Queen weighed the wordsโ€”then answered Bryceโ€™sย smile with her own, revealing all those hooked sharkโ€™s teeth. โ€œI donโ€™t recall inviting you onto this ship.โ€

Bryce checkedย her nailsโ€”it was such a thoroughly Bryce movement that Huntโ€™s chest tightened. โ€œWell,ย someoneย sent me an e-vite.โ€

Hunt lowered his head to keep the grin from his face. Heโ€™d forgotten how fun it wasโ€”to see Bryce in her element. Leading these shitheads along by the nose. It lightened some of that weight in his chest, some of that primal terrorโ€”just a fraction.

The Ocean Queen said flatly, โ€œI doย not know of any such thing.โ€

Amusement glimmered in Bryceโ€™s whiskey-colored eyes, but her tone was dead serious as she explained, โ€œI teleported here. I needed to find my mate.โ€

โ€œYou and your mate are dismissed,โ€ the Ocean Queen said, waving that nacre-tipped hand. A hermit crab skittered through her dark locks and then vanished again. โ€œI have important matters to discuss with Captain Ketos.โ€

Tharion looked up, grimacing. Maybe his death sentence hadnโ€™t been delayed after all.

But again, Bryce didnโ€™t miss a beat. โ€œYeah, see,ย myย matters are a bit more pressing.โ€

โ€œI find that highly unlikely.โ€

Two queens facing off. And there was no doubt in Huntโ€™s mind that Bryceย wasย a queen now. The poise, the strength radiating from her โ€ฆ She didnโ€™t need a crown to rule this room.

Bryce suckedย in a breath, the only sign of nerves. And said to the ruler of the seas, โ€œYouโ€™re wrong.โ€

It was only through sheer will that Bryce didnโ€™t throw her arms around Hunt immediately and kiss him silly. Only through sheer will that she didnโ€™t start raging and crying at the halo inked anew on his brow, the brand stamped on his wrist.

Sheโ€™d kill the Asteri for this.

Sheโ€™d already planned to, of course,ย but after what theyโ€™d done to Hunt while sheโ€™d been gone โ€ฆ sheโ€™d make sure they died slowly.

That is, once she figured out how to kill them.

And as soon as she held Hunt, she wasnโ€™t letting go. Ever. But they had so much shit to do right now that giving in wasnโ€™t an option, holding him and loving him werenโ€™t options.

She didnโ€™t dare ask where Ruhn was, not with the Ocean Queen present. Baxianย was with Hunt, so maybe her brother was nearby, too. The Autumn King had said they were all rescued. Ruhn had to be here. Somewhere.

But she couldnโ€™t wait for her brother. Heโ€™d have to be filled in later.

โ€œI journeyed to the original world of the Fae,โ€ she began, โ€œthrough a Gate in the Eternal Palace. I possess Lunaโ€™s Horn, which helped clear the pathway between worlds.โ€

Stunned, breathlessย silence filled the room. Hunt practically thrummed with lightning and curiosity, but Bryce kept her eyes on the Ocean Queen as the female said neutrally, โ€œIโ€™m assuming you learned something.โ€

Bryce gave a shallow nod. โ€œI knew already that the Asteri are intergalactic parasites. But I learned that the Asteri infected Midgardโ€™s waters upon invading this world.โ€

โ€œInfected,โ€ the Ocean Queen mused.

Bryce nodded again. โ€œThe Asteri put an actual parasite in the waterโ€”or something like a parasite. I donโ€™t really know what it is, specifically. Whatever it is, it makes everyone on Midgardย haveย to offer up firstlight via the Drop. Or else weโ€™ll lose our powersโ€”weโ€™ll wither and die.โ€

โ€œFuck,โ€ Hunt breathed. Bryce still didnโ€™t look at him, though. At Tharion or Baxian or Sendes, who were all gapingย in absolute dread.

Only the Ocean Queen didnโ€™t appear surprised.

Bryce said, narrowing her eyes in realization, โ€œYouโ€”you knew this.โ€

The Ocean Queen shook her head. โ€œNo. I always wondered, though, why my people still needed to make the Drop, even down here. But now that you have revealed this terrible truth, what shallย youย do?โ€

โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll take on the Asteri,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œBanish them fromย this world.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ The Ocean Queen shifted, the coral beading on her gown tinkling.

Bryce hedged, not quite willing to lay outย everythingย for this stranger. โ€œI donโ€™t suppose an eviction notice would do the trick?โ€

The three males around them didnโ€™t bat an eye, but Sendes shifted on her feet.

The Ocean Queen said plainly, โ€œThis is folly. Youโ€™d need entire armies to fight the Asteri.โ€

โ€œCareย to supply one?โ€ Bryce countered.

โ€œMy people are skilled in the water, not on land. But Ophion has forces, what little remain. I believe Lidia Cervos mustered them the other day to devastating effect. Though I have not yet learned how many survived the mission.โ€

Bryce said to the queen, โ€œSo youย doย work with Ophion?โ€

โ€œWe assist each other when we canโ€”I harbor their agents if they make it here.ย But Ophion is as prejudiced against us as a Vanir against a mortal. They find accepting our help to be โ€ฆ unsavory.โ€

โ€œPlenty of Vanir have helped Ophion over the years,โ€ Baxian cut in with soft strength.

Bryceโ€™s heart tightened as Danikaโ€™s face flashed through her mind. If Danika could not be here, it was only fitting that her mate stood here instead.

โ€œAnd Ophion resents all of them,โ€ Commanderย Sendes said from where she still stood beside the doorway. โ€œWeโ€™d need a solid bridge between us to get talks going about unifying armies.โ€

Hunt turned to Bryce and asked quietly, โ€œWhat about Briggs?โ€

Her blood chilled. โ€œNo fucking way. Heโ€™ll turn around and kill us.โ€ The former rebel leaderโ€™s gaunt, hollow face flashed in her mind, along with those deep blue eyes that had seemed to bore rightย through her.

โ€œShe is correct,โ€ the Ocean Queen said, folding her hands over her stomach once more in a portrait of regal poise. โ€œAnother route is required.โ€

Bryce said as casually as she could, โ€œHel will aid us.โ€

The Ocean Queen scoffed. โ€œYou trust those demons?โ€

โ€œI do.โ€ At the rulerโ€™s raised brows, Bryce said, jaw clenching, โ€œHelโ€™s known all this stuff for millennia. And tried their bestย to make it right. To help liberate us. Thatโ€™s what they were trying to do during the First Wars.โ€

Again, her friends were stunned into silence.

But the Ocean Queen let out a small, disbelieving snort. โ€œYou learned that in this other world as well?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Bryce kept her tone even, refusing to be baited.

โ€œYou trust Hel enough to fully open the Northern Rift to allow their armies through?โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s our only shot at defeating the Asteri.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d trade one evil for another.โ€

Bryce couldnโ€™t stop the starlight that began pulsing under her skin, condensing and sharpening into thatย thingย that could cleave through stone. โ€œIโ€™d hardly call the Princes of Hel evil, when theyโ€™ve refused to let the Asteri win all these years. When theyโ€™ve gone out of their way to try to help us, even thoughย itโ€™ll cost them. Hel owes us nothing, yet theyโ€™re so convinced of the importance of ridding the universe of the Asteri that theyโ€™ve been at this for thousands of years. Iโ€™d say thatโ€™s a pretty solid commitment.โ€

The Ocean Queen seemed to grow an inch, then another. She jerked her chin toward Hunt. โ€œYour mate hunted demons for centuriesโ€”has seen their brutality and bloodlust up close. What doesย he have to say about their supposed altruism?โ€

Hunt squared his shoulders, utterly unshakable. Bryceโ€™s throat tightened to see itโ€”to know even before he spoke that he had her back. โ€œItโ€™s tough for me to accept, especially when they wrecked Lunathion this spring, but if Bryce trusts them, I trust them. Besides, weโ€™re out of options.โ€

Bryce spared him from dwelling further on the topic by saying,ย โ€œThere is another thing.โ€

All of them turned to her. Hunt, at least, had the good sense to look nervous.

Bryce kept her gaze on the Ocean Queen as she said, โ€œWe need to head to Avallen.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ the Ocean Queen demanded. A tsunami roared in her tone.

โ€œThereโ€™s some research I need to do in its archives that might help our cause.โ€ It was at leastย partiallyย the truth. โ€œAbout the First Wars andย Helโ€™s involvement.โ€

Okay, the last part was a lie. But she wasnโ€™t about to explain what she really needed on the mist-shrouded isle.

The Ocean Queen drawled, โ€œI donโ€™t recall becoming a ferry service. Do you assume my city-ship is at your disposal?โ€

โ€œDo you want to win this war or not?โ€

Shock rippled through the room at her words. Hunt tensed, readying for a physical confrontation.

But Bryceย blazed with starlight as she said, โ€œLook, I know nothing is free. But for fuckโ€™s sake, letโ€™s talk plainly. Name your price. Youโ€™ve gone out of your way to try to help people for years, working toward bringing down the Asteri. So why are you making things more difficult when we finally have a chance at beating them?โ€

โ€œThis is becoming tedious,โ€ the Ocean Queen said. โ€œI did not come here to beย ordered about by an impostor queen.โ€

โ€œCall me what you want,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œbut the longer we donโ€™t act, the easier it will be for Rigelus and the rest of the Asteri to move against us.โ€

โ€œEverything seems urgent to the young.โ€

โ€œYeah, I get that, butโ€”โ€

โ€œI was not done speaking.โ€

Bryce hid her wince as the Ocean Queen surveyed her. โ€œYouย areย young. And idealistic. And inexperienced.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™tย forget ill qualified and always inappropriately dressed.โ€

The female cut her a warning glare. Bryce held up her hands in mock surrender.

The Ocean Queen loosed a long breath. โ€œI do not know you, Bryce Danaan, and so far have seen little to recommend you as a reliable ally. My people have managed to evade the Asteriโ€™s influence for millennia nowโ€”to remain safe down here, fighting againstย themย as best we can. And yet you have informed me that even here, we are not untouched. Even here, in my domain, the Asteriโ€™s parasite infects us all.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry to have been the bearer of bad news,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œbut would you rather I had kept it from you?โ€

โ€œHonestly? I donโ€™t know.โ€ The Ocean Queen studied her handโ€”a banded sea krait twined around her wrist like a living black-and-white bracelet.ย Poisonous as Hel. The ruler said quietly, โ€œHave you thought about an evacuation?โ€

Bryce started. โ€œTo where? Thereโ€™s nowhere on Midgard, except maybe this ship, that isnโ€™t under their control.โ€ Avallen was apparently shielded by its mists, yes, but King Morven still bowed to the Asteri.

The queen lifted her head. โ€œTo the home world of the Fae.โ€

Hunt shifted, wings rustling. โ€œYou mean leave thisย planet completely?โ€

The Ocean Queen didnโ€™t take her eyes from Bryceโ€™s as she said, โ€œYes. Use the Horn, allow as many through as you can, and then seal the way forever.โ€

Horror twisted through her. โ€œAnd whatโ€”abandon the rest here? To be slaves and feeding troughs for the Asteri?โ€ Sheโ€™d be no better than Silene.

The Ocean Queen asked, โ€œIsnโ€™t it better for some to be free, than for all to be dead?โ€

Hunt let out a low laugh, stepping closer to Bryceโ€™s side as he said to the Ocean Queen, โ€œYou canโ€™t mean that. Who the fuck would even get chosen to come? Your people? Our families? In what universe is that fair?โ€

Seated at the conference table, Baxian nodded his agreement, but Tharion kept still as stone. Maybe he didnโ€™t want to attract the queenโ€™s attention or ire once more. Spineless asshole.ย But Bryce squashed her distaste. She needed all the allies she could get.

โ€œI do not say it is fair,โ€ the Ocean Queen said, stroking the sea krait on her wrist. โ€œBut it might be what is necessary.โ€

Bryce swallowed the dryness in her mouth. โ€œI came back here to help everyone, not to abandon them to the mercy of the Asteri.โ€

โ€œPerhaps Urd sent you to that other world to establish a safe harbor.ย Have you considered that?โ€

Bryce exploded, โ€œWhat was all this for, then? The stealth, the ships, the Ophion contacts? What the fuck was it for if you just want to run away from the Asteri in the end?โ€

Eyes blacker than the Melinoรซย Trench pinned her to the spot. โ€œDo not dare question my dedication, girl. I have fought and sacrificed for this world when no one else would. Once, my kingdom wasย vaster than you can imagineโ€”but the Asteri came, and entire islands withered into the sea in despair, taking the very heart of this world with it. The very heart of the mer, too. If there is anyone who understands how futile it is to stand against the Asteri, it is I.โ€

Bryceโ€™s breath caught in her throat. โ€œWaitโ€”you were hereย beforeย the Asteri? The mer were here? I thought only humans lived onย Midgard then.โ€

The Ocean Queenโ€™s face became distant with memory. โ€œThey had the landโ€”we had the seas. Our people met only occasionally, the root of the humansโ€™ legends about the mer.โ€ A wistful smile, then her eyes again focused on Bryce, sharp and calculating. โ€œBut yes, we have always been here. Midgard has always had magic, as all nature has inherent magic. The Asteri just did not deign toย recognize it.โ€

Bryce filed away the information. โ€œFineโ€”you win the award for longest-suffering people on Midgard. That doesnโ€™t entitle you to jump to the front of the Evacuate Midgard line.โ€ Hunt touched her shoulder lightly, a gentle warning. But Bryce ignored him and laid her hands flat on the table, leaning over it to breathe in the Ocean Queenโ€™s face. โ€œIย refuseย to open a gate like that. Iย wonโ€™t help you condemn the majority of Midgardโ€™s people while a select few dance off into the sunset.โ€

The sea krait on the Ocean Queenโ€™s wrist hissed at Bryce. Even as its mistressโ€™s face remained as cold as the ice floes of the north. โ€œYou will come around to the idea when your friends and loved ones start dying around you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare condescend to her,โ€ Hunt growled at the queen.

Sendes cleared her throat, trying to bail them out of thisย clusterfuck, but all Bryce could hear was a roaring in her ears, all she could see was a blinding white creeping over her visionโ€”

โ€œYouโ€™re a coward,โ€ Bryce spat at the Ocean Queen. โ€œYou hide behind your power, but youโ€™re aย coward.โ€

The ship shuddered, as if the very sea tensed with rage.

But the Ocean Queen said, โ€œAgainst my better instincts,ย I will deposit you and yours in Avallen, as requested. Consider that my last gift.โ€

Bryce ground her teeth so hard her jaw hurt.

โ€œBut when you fail in whatever uprising you think you can muster,โ€ the Ocean Queen said by way of dismissal, striding for the door, leaving a trail of water in her wake, โ€œwhen you realize that I am right and fleeing is the best option, I ask only this in exchange forย my services: take as many of my people as you can.โ€
