Chapter no 27

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Bryce couldnโ€™t move for a moment. Vesperus was dead.

Nesta slashed her hand and the creatureโ€™s body burned with that strange silver fire.

As the Asteri was reduced to ashes, Bryce grabbed the sword and dagger from the ground, both blades dripping with Vesperusโ€™s blood.

She whirled on Nesta, on Azriel. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have killed her. If we could have gotten her under control, the amountย of information that we could have pried from herโ€”โ€

โ€œDo you have any idea what you almost did here?โ€ Nesta raged, covered in Vesperusโ€™s dark ichor. She still gripped Ataraxia in one hand, as if not yet decided whether she was done killing. โ€œWhat you unleashed?โ€

โ€œTrust me, I know better than you guys what the Asteri can do.โ€

โ€œThen you have even less of an excuse for your actions,โ€ Nesta snapped.ย Her sword rose.

Azriel extended a scarred hand to Bryce, panting hard. โ€œOpen the passage out of here. Youโ€™re coming back with us. Right now.โ€

To that cell under a different mountain. Where she had no doubt sheโ€™d be subjected to the interrogation Vesperus should have received.

Bryce snorted. โ€œLike Hel I am.โ€ Debris began floating aroundย her. โ€œYou killed the one person here who might have givenย me the answer I needed.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re looking for ways to kill the Daglan. Well,ย Iย just killed that monster,โ€ Nesta said. โ€œIsnโ€™t that answer enough?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œYouโ€™ve only left me with more questions.โ€

She let her power flow outward from the star in her chest. From the Horn in her back.

โ€œDonโ€™t youย dare,โ€ Azriel warned with lethal softness.

But Bryce shoved out a slice of her power. Sharpย and targeted, as Silene had used to carve the stones. As Azriel had focused his own power on her star earlier.

Light cut through stone and sizzled, a line literally drawn at Azrielโ€™s feet.

Whatever had changed in her power with the addition of Sileneโ€™s magic โ€ฆ Fuck yeah. This would be useful.

โ€œI wonโ€™t tell them about you,โ€ Bryce said coolly, even as part of her marveled at the laser sheโ€™d createdย out of pure magic. The other part of her cringed from itโ€”from the power that was eerily similar to what Rigelus had used against her before she jumped through the Gate in the Eternal Palace. โ€œI swear it on my mateโ€™s life. Even if Rigelus โ€ฆโ€ She shook her head. โ€œI wonโ€™t breathe a word to them about this place.โ€

Azriel dared to put one foot over the line sheโ€™d blasted into the floor. โ€œTheyโ€™ll pryย it from you. People like me, like them โ€ฆ we always get the information we need.โ€ His gaze darkened with the promise of unending pain.

โ€œI wonโ€™t let it come to that,โ€ Bryce said, and sent her power searing through her star againโ€”right into the crystal sarcophagus.

Crystal like the Gate that had opened the way to this world.

The sarcophagus glowed โ€ฆ and then darkened into a pit.

โ€œPlease,โ€ Azrielย said, his gaze now on her hands. On the Starswordโ€”and on Truth-Teller. Something like panic filled his hazel eyes.

Shaking her head, Bryce backed toward the hole sheโ€™d made in the world. In the universe. She could only pray it would lead her to Midgard.

She met Nestaโ€™s stare. Raging silver fire flickered there.

โ€œYouโ€™re as much of a monster as they are,โ€ Nesta accused.

Bryce knew. Sheโ€™d alwaysย known. โ€œLove will do that to you.โ€

Silver flames roared for her in a tidal wave, but Bryce was already leaping, sheathing the blades as she moved. Cold like nothing sheโ€™d known tore past her head, her spineโ€”

And then the light from Nestaโ€™s silver flame winked out as the gate shut above Bryce, nothing but darkness surrounding her as she plunged deeper and deeper into the pit.

Toward home.
