The shadows were watching him again.
Baxian and Ruhn had passed out, and Hunt had thought heโd lost consciousness, too, but โฆ here he was. Watching a shadow watch him back. It stood beside the rack of devices Pollux and the Hawk had used on him.
Lidia hadnโt appeared today. He didnโt know whether that was a good sign. Didnโt dare ask Ruhn for his take on it. Hunt supposed that, out of allย of them, he himself should be the one to know whether it was a good sign. Heโd lived through this shit for years.
But he should have known a lot of other things, too.
Hunt had lost feeling in his hands, his shoulders. The itching from his slowly regenerating wings continued, though. Like streams of ants tickling down his spine. No writhing could help it.
He should have known not to tangle withย Archangels, with the Asteri. He should have warned Bryce more stronglyโshould have tried harder to get her to back down from this insane path.
Isaiah had tried to convince him all those centuries ago. Hunt hadnโt listened โฆ and heโd lived with the consequences. He should have learned.
His blood cooled as it ran along his body. Dripped to the floor.
But he hadnโt learned a fucking thing, apparently.ย One didnโtย take on the Asteri and their hierarchies and win.ย He should have known.
The shadow smiled at him.
So Hunt smiled back. And then the shadow spoke.
โYou would do well in Hel.โ
Too drugged with agony, Hunt didnโt even quiver at the familiar male voice. One heโd already heard in another dream, another life.
โApollion,โ he grunted. Not Death at all, then.
He tried not to let disappointmentย sink in his gut.
โWhat a sorry state youโre in,โ the Prince of the Pit purred. He remained hidden in the shifting shadows. The demon prince inhaled, as if tasting the air. โWhat delicious pain you feel.โ
โIโd be happy to share.โ
A terrifyingly soft laugh. โYour good humor, it seems, remains intact. Even with the halo inked anew upon your brow.โ
Hunt smiled savagely. โI had the honor of havingย it done by Rigelusโs hand this time.โ
โInteresting that he would do it himself, rather than employ an imperial hag. Do you detect a difference?โ
Huntโs chin dipped. โThis one โฆ stings. The hagโs halo felt like cold iron. This burns like acid.โ Heโd just finished voicing the last word when a thought slammed into him. โBryce. Is she โฆ is she with you?โ If theyโd hurt her, if Apollion gave oneย suggestion thatโ
โNo.โ The shadow seemed to blink. โWhy?โ
Horror leached through Hunt, colder than ice. โBryce didnโt make it to Hel?โ Where was she, then? Had she made it anywhere, or was she tumbling through time and space, forever trappedโ
He must have made some pitiful noise because Apollion said, โOne moment before the hysterics, Athalar,โ and vanished.
Hunt couldnโt breathe. Maybe itย was the weight of his body crushing his lungs, but โฆ Bryce hadnโt made it. She hadnโt fucking made it to Hel, and he was stuck here, andโ
Apollion appeared again, a second shadow at his side. Taller and thinner, with eyes like blue opals.
โWhere is Bryce?โย hissed the Prince of the Chasm.
โShe went to find you.โ Huntโs voice broke. Beside him, Ruhnย groaned, stirring. โShe went to fucking findย you, Aidas.โ The Princes of Hel looked at each other, some wordless conversation passing between them. Hunt pushed, โYou two told her to find you. Fed us all that bullshit about armies and wanting to help and getting her readyโโ
โIs it possible,โ Aidas said to his brother, ignoring Hunt entirely, โafter everything โฆ?โ
โDonโt fall into romanticism,โ Apollion cautioned.
โThe star might have guidedย her,โ Aidas countered.
โPlease,โ Hunt cut in, not caring if he was begging.ย โTell me where she is.โย Baxian grunted, rising to consciousness.
Aidas said quietly, โI have a suspicion, but I canโt tell you, Athalar, lest Rigelus wring it from you. Though he has likely already arrived at the same conclusion.โ
โFuck you,โ Hunt spat.
But Apollion said to his brother, โWe must leave.โ
โThen whatย was the point of all this watching me from the shadows?โ Hunt demanded.
โTo ensure that we can continue to rely on you when the time comes.โ
โTo do what?โ Hunt ground out.
โWhat you were born to doโto accomplish the task for which your father brought you into existence,โ Apollion said before fading into nothing, leaving Aidas standing alone before the prisoners.
Shock reared up in Hunt, dampenedย by the weight of an old, unbidden hurt. โI have no father.โ
Aidasโs expression was sad as he stepped out of the shadows. โYou spent too long asking the wrong questions.โ
โWhat the fuck doesย thatย mean?โ
Aidas shook his head. โThe black crown once again circling your brow is not a new torment from the Asteri. It has existed for millennia.โ
โTell me the fucking truth forย onceโโ
โStay alive,ย Athalar.โ The Prince of the Chasm followed his brother, vanishing into darkness and embers.
Tharion woke with a pounding headache that echoed through every inch of his body.
From the smell in his room, Holstrom had slept there, likely on the floor, but the space was empty. Squinting against his headache, Tharion padded into the main living space to find Holstrom on the couch, Flynn beside him,ย and Declan and Marc nursing coffees at the small table by the window overlooking the fighting pit. Ariadne sat in a chair, reading a book, her demeanor completely at odds with the female whoโd roasted those lions last night.
No sign of the Fendyr heir. Or the sprites. Maybe heโd hallucinated that part.
โMorning,โ he grumbled, shutting one eye against the brightness of the room.
Fine. Heโd deal with them in a moment. After coffee. He padded to the wet bar across the room, the glare of the muted television sending a spike of pain through his left eye, and turned on the coffee machine by muscle memory. Tharion shoved a cup under the nozzle and hit a button that vaguely resembled the main one.
โYou really do look like shit,โ Flynn drawled as Tharion inhaled theย aroma of the coffee. โAri, of course, looks gorgeous as always.โ
The dragon kept her attention on her book, ignoring the Fae lord. She didnโt move a muscle, as if she wanted them to forget she was there. Like such a thing was even possible.
But Flynn focused on Tharion again. โWhy didnโt you come to us for help?โ
Tharion sipped his coffee, wincing at the heat that burned his mouth. โItโs tooย early for this conversation.โ
โBullshit,โ Holstrom said. โWe would have helped you. Why come here?โ
Tharion couldnโt keep the snap from his voice. โBecause the River Queen would have wiped you guys off the map. I didnโt want that on my conscience.โ
โAnd this is better?โ Ithan demanded.
Flynn added, โNow youโre stuck here, taking whatever sheย dishes out, not to mention the shit sheโs offeringย you on the side. How could you be so fucking dumb?โ
Tharion cut him a look. โYouโre one to talk about doing dumb shit, Flynn.โ
Flynnโs eyes flickeredโa rare glimmer of the powerful Fae lord lurking beneath the casual facade. โEven I would never sell my soul to the Viper Queen, Ketos.โ
Holstrom added, โThereโs gotta be some way to get you out of this. You defected from the Blue Court. Whoโsย to say you canโt defect fromโโ
โLook,โ Tharion said, grinding his teeth, โI know youโve got some savior complex, Holstromโโ
โFuck you. Youโre my friend. You donโt get to ignore the danger youโre drowning in.โ
Tharion couldnโt decide whether to glare at the wolf or hug him. He drank from his boiling-hot coffee again. Welcomed its sear down his throat.
Ithan said hoarsely, โWeโre all thatโsย left. Itโs only us now.โ
Declan said quietly from the table, โItโs all fucked up. Ruhn, Athalar, Bryce โฆโ Marc laid a comforting hand on his shoulder.
โI know,โ Tharion said. โAnd Cormacโs dead.โ
โWhat?โ Flynn spat his coffee back into his mug.
Tharion filled them in on what had gone down in the lab, and fuckโhe really could have used some of that venom right now. By the time heโd finishedย explaining his arrangement with the Viper Queen, they were all silent again.
Until Flynn said, โOkay. Next steps: We need to get to theย Depth Charger, and then to Pangera. To the Eternal City.โ He nodded to Tharion. โBefore we got ambushed by Sabine, we had just decided to seek you outโto bail you out of this shit, and to see if you could get us in with the mer on the ship.โ
โThereโs no wayย in Hel the Vipe lets him go,โ Ari said, breaking her silence.
The males blinked at her, as if theyโd indeed forgotten that a dragon sat in their midst. Marcโs mouth tightened as he realized how much sheโd heard.
But Flynn asked her, brow arching, โAnd youโre an authority on the Vipe now?โ
โIโm an authority on assholes,โ Ari countered smoothly, giving Flynn a look as if to indicate that he wasย included on that list. โAnd by asking her to free him, youโll make her cling tighter.โ
โSheโs right,โ Tharion said. โI can try to think of a way to contact Commander Sendesโโ
โNo,โ Ithan said. โWeย allย go.โ
โIโm touched,โ Tharion said, setting his coffee down on the counter behind him. โReally. But itโs not as easy as sayingย I defectย and walking out.โ
Ithan bristled, but Sigrid appeared inย the bathroom doorway, steam rippling out. She must have showered. โWhat would it take?โ
Tharion eyed the female. Definitely an Alpha, with that solid stance, those bright eyes. The lack of fear in them. โThe Vipeโs all about business.โ
โYouโre rich,โ Ari said to Flynn.
โItโs not about money for her,โ Marc said. โSheโs got more than she knows what to do with. Itโd take a trade.โ
Tharion frownedย toward the hallwayโthe door that led to the Viper Queenโs private chambers. โWhoโs with her right now?โ
โSome female,โ Ari answered, rising to her feet and padding toward the hall. She reached the door to her room and said over a shoulder, โPretty blond in an imperial uniform.โ The dragon didnโt say anything else as she shut her bedroom door. Then locked it.
โWe need to get out of here,โ Declanย said, voice low. โImmediately.โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ Flynn asked. Declan was already reaching for his handgun, Marc easing to his feet beside him with feline grace.
Tharion peered down the hall in time to see the door swing open. The Viper Queen, clad in a blue silk tracksuit and white high-top sneakers, sauntered toward them, hooped gold earrings swaying beneath her black bob. โJust a moment,โ sheย said to whoever was in the room behind her. โYour kind of poisonโs downstairs. Takes a minute to get.โ
Tharion stiffened as the snake shifter entered the room, surveying his friends.
โYou missed a spot of Sabineโs blood on your hands,โ she drawled to Flynn.
They all glared at her. But it was the Fendyr heir who shot to her feet and snapped, โYouโre no better than the Astronomer, keeping theseย people here, drugging andโโ
The Viper Queen cut her off. โLower the hackles, little Fendyr.โ She surveyed Sigrid from her wet hair to her baggy sweats. โStaying hereโs free, but a wardrobe upgrade will cost you.โ
โLet them go,โ Sigrid commanded, voice like thunder. โThe dragon and the merโlet them go.โ
Tharion didnโt let the Alphaโs ferocity get his hopes up. Not as the Viper Queen laughed.ย โWhy would I do that? They bring in good business.โ She cut Tharion a mocking smirk as she stalked for the door, headed to get whatever drugs her client down the hall wanted. โWhen theyโre not blowing their load after a few minutes.โ
Tharion bristled, crossing his arms. But as soon as the Viper Queen had shut the door, vanishing outside, clipped footsteps sounded from down the hall.
Dec andย Flynn drew their guns. Holstrom had his claws out. Tharion unsheathed his own, his entire body tensing.
โPut those away,โ said a cool female voice. Terror stole any last traces of Tharionโs brain fog.
โOh fuck,โ Flynn breathed.
โYou open that door,โ the Hind said mildly, โand Prince Ruhn dies.โ
