Chapter no 63

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

โ€œHe was a micromanaging fucking nightmare,โ€ Bryce ranted the next day as she stood with Hunt, Ruhn, and Declan in the Aux training center during her lunch break. Tharion lay sprawled on a bench against the wall, napping. Cormac, standing across the space, frowned.

Her brother was pale. โ€œYou really think Theia and a bunch of Fae sided with Hel during the war?โ€

Bryce suppressed a shiver of cold at the memory. โ€œWho knows whatโ€™s true?โ€

Across the vast, empty room, Hunt rubbed his jaw. She hadnโ€™t even mentioned what Apollion had saidโ€”that little tidbit about Hunt beingย bred. Sheโ€™d tackle that later. Hunt mused, โ€œWhatโ€™s the benefit in convincing us of a lie? Or the truth, either, I suppose. All that matters is that Hel is definitely on the move.โ€

Declan said, โ€œCan we pause for a moment and remark on the fact that both of you haveย spokenย to the Prince of the Pit? Is no one else about to puke at the thought?โ€

Ruhn held up a hand, and Tharion lazily lifted one from the bench, but Bryce high-fived Hunt. โ€œSpecial kids club,โ€ she said to the angel, who winked at her. She leapt back a step, rallying her power. โ€œAgain.โ€ Theyโ€™d been in here for twenty minutes already, practicing.

Huntโ€™s lightning flared at his fingertips, and Bryce set her feet apart. โ€œReady?โ€ he asked.

Tharion roused himself enough to turn over, propping his head on a fist. Bryce scowled at him, but the mer only waggled his brows in

encouragement.

She faced Hunt again, right as the angel hurled his lightning at her like a spear. It zinged against her chest, a direct hit, and then she was glowing, power singing, soaringโ€”

Two feet in front of the windows.

Sheโ€™d no sooner thought the command than she appeared across the space. Exactly two feet from the windows.ย Back to a foot before Hunt.

She appeared before him, so suddenly that he staggered back.

Ruhn. She moved again, slower this time. But her brother yelped.

Declan braced himself, like he thought heโ€™d be next, so Bryce thought,

A foot behind Hunt.

She pinched her mateโ€™s butt so fast he didnโ€™t have time to whirl before sheโ€™d moved again. This time in front of Declan, who cursed when she poked him in the ribs, then teleported once more.

Cormac called from where heโ€™d been standing in the far corner, โ€œYouโ€™re slowing.โ€ She was. Damn it, she was. Bryce rallied her power, Huntโ€™s energy. She appeared in front of Tharionโ€™s bench, but the mer was waiting.

Fast as a striking shark, Tharion grabbed her face and planted a smacking kiss on her lips.

Huntโ€™s laugh boomed across the space, and Bryce joined him, batting the mer away.

โ€œToo slow, Legs,โ€ Tharion drawled, leaning back against the bench and crossing an ankle over a knee. He draped an arm along the back of the plastic bench. โ€œAnd too predictable.โ€

โ€œAgain,โ€ Cormac ordered. โ€œFocus.โ€

Bryce tried, but her bones weighed her down. Tried again to no avail. โ€œIโ€™m out.โ€

โ€œConcentrate, and you could hold on longer. You use too much at once, and donโ€™t reserve the energy for later.โ€

Bryce put her hands on her hips as she panted. โ€œYour teleporting works differently than mine. How can you know that?โ€

โ€œMine comes from a source of magic, too. Energy, just a different form.

Each jump takes more out of me. Itโ€™s a muscle that you need to build up.โ€ She scowled, wiping her brow as she walked back over to Hunt.

โ€œIt does seem like heโ€™s right,โ€ Declan said to Bryce. โ€œYour teleporting works when your power gets charged up by energyโ€”considering what I

heard about how quickly you ran out of steam with Hypaxia, Huntโ€™s is the best form of it.โ€

โ€œDamn right it is,โ€ Hunt growled, earning a smack on the arm from Bryce.

โ€œDo you think the power will โ€ฆ stay in me if I donโ€™t use it?โ€ she asked Dec.

โ€œI donโ€™t think so,โ€ Dec said. โ€œYour power came from the Gateโ€”with a shit-ton of firstlight mixed in. So your magicโ€”beyond the light, I meanโ€” needs to be powered up. It relies on firstlight, or any other form of energy it can get. Youโ€™re literally a Gate: you can take in power and offer it. But it seems the similarity ends there. The Gates can store power indefinitely, while yours clearly peters out after a while.โ€ He faced Hunt. โ€œAnd your power, Athalar, as pure energy, is able to draw from her, like she did from the Gate. Bryce, when you draw from a source, itโ€™s the same way the Gates zap power from people using them to communicate.โ€

Bryce blinked. โ€œSo Iโ€™m like some magical leech?โ€

Declan laughed. โ€œI think only of certain kinds of magic. Forms of pure energy. Throw in the Horn, which relies on a blast of power to activate it

โ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re a liability,โ€ Ruhn said darkly. Tharion grunted his agreement.

Declan rubbed his chin. โ€œYou told Ruhn after the attack that Hypaxia aimed for your scar to supercharge your powers, right? I wonder what would happen if you were struck on the Horn.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s not find out,โ€ Bryce said quickly.

โ€œAgreed,โ€ Cormac said from across the room. He pointed to the obstacle course heโ€™d laid out in the center of the space. โ€œBack to work. Follow the track.โ€

Bryce pivoted toward the Avallen Prince, and said as casually as she could, โ€œIโ€™m shocked youโ€™re even here.โ€

Cormac said icily, โ€œBecause you decided to end our engagement without consulting me?โ€

Hunt muttered to her, โ€œAnything to avoid your exercises, huh?โ€

She glared at her mate, especially as Ruhn chuckled, but said to Cormac, โ€œI had no other choice.โ€

Shadows rippled around Cormac. โ€œYou could have let me know while you were plotting.โ€

โ€œThere was no plotting. Athalar and I decided, and then just waited.โ€

The Avallen Prince snarled low. Hunt let out a warning growl of his own. Tharion said nothing, though she knew the mer was monitoring every breath and word. But Cormac didnโ€™t take his eyes from her. โ€œDo you have any idea what the phone call with my father was like?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m assuming it was similar to the Autumn King telling me Iโ€™m a little bitch?โ€

Cormac shook his head. โ€œLetโ€™s be clear: Iโ€™m only here today because Iโ€™m well aware that if Iโ€™m not, then your brother will cease contacting Agent Daybright.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m flattered you know me so well,โ€ Ruhn drawled, his arms crossed. Heโ€™d moved into a position on Cormacโ€™s other sideโ€”without her even noticing. Placing himself between the Avallen Prince and Bryce. Oh please.

Cormac glowered at him, but then focused upon Bryce again. โ€œIโ€™m willing to move beyond this, on the condition that you donโ€™t surprise me again. We have too many enemies as it is.โ€

โ€œOne,โ€ she said, โ€œdonโ€™t give me conditions. But two โ€ฆโ€ She made a show of examining her bare arms. โ€œNothing up my sleeves. No other secrets to hide, I swear.โ€

Except for that itsy-bitsy thing about Emile. Hunt gave her a dry look, as if to say,ย Liar, but she ignored him.

Cormac, however, did not. Catching that look, the Avallen Prince said, โ€œThereโ€™s something else.โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

But even Ruhn now lifted his brows at her. Hunt said casually, โ€œDonโ€™t be paranoid.โ€

โ€œYou have something planned,โ€ Cormac pressed. โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake, tell me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have anything planned,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œother than figuring out this teleporting crap.โ€

One moment, Cormac was glancing between her and Hunt. The next, heโ€™d vanished.

Only to reappear at Bryceโ€™s back with a knife to her throat.

Bryce stiffened. โ€œCome on, Cormac. Thereโ€™s no need for this.โ€ Lightning shone in Huntโ€™s eyes. Ruhn had drawn his gun. Tharion remained sprawled across the bench, butโ€”that was a knife now gleaming in his hand. His focus was fixed on the Avallen Prince.

โ€œTell me,โ€ Cormac snarled, and cool metal bit into her throat.

Trying not to breathe too deeply, Bryce laid a finger on the blade. โ€œI made the Drop. Iโ€™ll survive.โ€

Cormac hissed at her ear. โ€œTell me what the fuck you have planned, or youโ€™ll lose your head. Good luck growing that back.โ€

โ€œYou draw blood and you lose your head, too,โ€ Hunt growled with lethal menace.

She could blind Cormac, she supposed. But would his shadows muffle the impact? She doubted heโ€™d truly kill her, but if he tried โ€ฆ Hunt would definitely attack. Ruhn would, too.

And sheโ€™d have an even bigger mess on her hands. So Bryce said, โ€œFine. Itโ€™s about Emile.โ€

Hunt started. So did Tharion as the mer said, โ€œBryce.โ€ Cormac didnโ€™t remove the knife. โ€œWhatย about Emile?โ€

โ€œI found him. At the Viper Queenโ€™s warehouse.โ€ She sighed loudly. โ€œI learned he was there, that all the reptiles and gross things in the marshes had told her where he was and sheโ€™d gone to retrieve him. She was the one who killed the people who helped him, and intended to control him. But when I went to the warehouse two days ago, he was already gone.โ€

Cormac whirled her to face him with rough hands. โ€œGone where?โ€

โ€œSomewhere safe. Apparently, the Vipe found it in herself to put him into the care of people who will look after him.โ€

โ€œWho?โ€ His face was white with rage. Tharionโ€™s eyes had widened. โ€œI donโ€™t know. She wouldnโ€™t tell me.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll make her tellย me.โ€

Ruhn laughed. โ€œNo one makes the Viper Queen do anything.โ€

Into her mind, her brother said,ย Cormac might not know you well enough to tell when youโ€™re lying, but I do.

Itโ€™s not a lie. Emile is safe.

Heโ€™s just not where youโ€™re claiming.

Oh, he was with the Viper Queen. And now heโ€™s somewhere else.

Cormac shook his head. โ€œWhy would the Viper Queen have any interest in that boy?โ€

โ€œBecause she likes to collect powerful beings to fight in her pits,โ€ Hunt snarled. โ€œNow put the fucking knife away.โ€

To her relief, the prince lowered the knife from her neck with an easy flip of the blade. โ€œBut why would she let go of someone so powerful, if she likes to use them in fights?โ€

Bryce said, โ€œBecause Emile has no powers.โ€

Are you shitting me?ย Ruhn asked.

Nope. Kidโ€™s totally human.

Cormacโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œSofie saidโ€”โ€ โ€œShe lied,โ€ Bryce said.

Cormacโ€™s shoulders slumped. โ€œI need to find him. I shouldnโ€™t have put off questioning Spetsosโ€”โ€

โ€œEmile is safe, and cared for,โ€ Bryce interrupted, โ€œand thatโ€™s all you need to know.โ€

โ€œI owe it to Sofieโ€”โ€

โ€œYou owe it to Sofie to keep Emile out of this rebellion. Your life is hardly what Iโ€™d call a stable environment. Let him stay hidden.โ€

Cormac said to Tharion, โ€œWhat areย youย going to tell your queen?โ€

Tharion offered him a razor-sharp smile. โ€œAbsolutely nothing.โ€ A threat of violence simmered beneath the words. If Cormac breathed anything to the mer, to the River Queen, the Avallen Prince would find himself in a watery grave.

Cormac sighed. And to her shock, he said, โ€œI apologize for the knife.โ€ To Hunt, he said, โ€œAnd I apologize for threatening your mate.โ€

Ruhn asked, โ€œDonโ€™t I get an apology?โ€ Cormac bristled, but Ruhn grinned.

Bryce caught Hunt watching her, his expression proud. Like sheโ€™d done something worthy. Had it been her smooth weaving of lies and truth?

โ€œApology accepted,โ€ Bryce said, forcing herself to sound chipper.

Steering away from the topic of Emile. โ€œNow back to training.โ€

Cormac shrugged, pointing to the spots heโ€™d taped off: Xโ€™s on the floor, atop chairs, atop piled mats, beneath a table.

Bryce groaned, but marked them, cataloged the path sheโ€™d take.

โ€œWell, that was exciting,โ€ Tharion announced, groaning as he got to his feet. โ€œRight. Iโ€™m out.โ€

Hunt arched a brow. โ€œWhere to?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m still technically employed by the River Queen. Regardless of what happened with Emile, there are other matters to attend to.โ€

Bryce waved at him. But Ruhn said, โ€œDinner tonight?โ€

Tharion winked. โ€œYou got it.โ€ Then he sauntered through the metal doors and was gone.

โ€œAll right, Athalar,โ€ Bryce muttered when the mer had shut the doors. โ€œTime to level up.โ€

Hunt laughed, but his lightning flared again. โ€œLetโ€™s do this, Your Highness.โ€

There was something in the way he saidย Your Highnessย that made her realize that the expression on his face a moment before hadnโ€™t been pride in her manipulationโ€”it had been pride in the way sheโ€™d defused things without violence. Like he thought she might actually deserve the title she now bore.

Bryce tucked the thought aside. By the time the bolt of lightning slammed into her chest, she was already running.

Despite the exhaustion weighing on his very bones, despite the urgency that had sent him and Hypaxia racing here, Ithan couldnโ€™t help gaping from the doorway as the party girl heโ€™d loved moved through the Aux training space like the wind, vanishing and appearing at will. At his side, Hypaxia monitored the remarkable feats, studying Bryce intently.

Bryce finished the obstacle course and halted at Huntโ€™s side, bending over her knees to catch her breath.

Hypaxia cleared her throat, stepping into the gymnasium. Even the queen looked โ€ฆ ruffled after the endless, terrifying night theyโ€™d had.

Theyโ€™d passed Tharion on his way out. The mer had been speaking in low tones to someone on the phone, and had raised his brows with concern at the sight of the dirt and sweat on them. But whoever had been on the phone must have been important enough that he couldnโ€™t hang up, and Tharion had only continued on after Hypaxia had given him a gesture that seemed to assure him that she was fine. The mer had stopped and peered

back over a shoulder at Ithan, as if needing to confirm the queenโ€™s claim, but Ithan had nothing to offer him. What the Hel could he say? They werenโ€™t fine. Not at all. So theyโ€™d left Tharion in the hall, the mer staring after them for a long moment.

โ€œWhatโ€™s up?โ€ Ruhn asked Ithan, waving his greeting to Hypaxia. Then the prince did a double take. โ€œWhat the Hel happened to you two? I thought you were summoning Connor.โ€

The others in the training space halted.

โ€œWe did indeed try to summon Connor Holstrom last night,โ€ Hypaxia said gravely.

Bryce paled as she hurried over. โ€œWhat happened? Is Connor all right?

Are you guys all right?โ€

Ithanโ€™s throat worked. โ€œAh โ€ฆโ€

Hypaxia replied for him, โ€œWe did not encounter Connor. The Under-King answered.โ€

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Bryce asked again, voice rising.

Ithan met her stare. Pure predatory wolf gleamed there. โ€œHe detained us for his amusement. Sicced Flame and Shadowโ€™s nightmare dogs on us and warded us into an olive grove with them. It took Hypaxia until now to figure out an exit through the wards that wouldnโ€™t get us ripped to shreds. Weโ€™re fine, though.โ€ Ruhn whirled with alarm to his fiancรฉe, and the witch-queen nodded solemnly, shadows in her eyes. Ithan scrubbed at his face before he added, โ€œHe wants to see you at Urdโ€™s Temple.โ€

Huntโ€™s lightning sparked at his fingertips. โ€œFuck no.โ€

Ithan swallowed hard. โ€œYou donโ€™t have a choice.โ€ He turned, pleading and exhausted, to Bryce. โ€œConnor is safe for right now, but if you donโ€™t show within an hour, the Under-King will throw him and the rest of the Pack of Devils through the Gate immediately. Heโ€™ll make secondlight of them all.โ€
