Chapter no 54

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Sitting in her office at the archives, phone at her ear, Bryce drained the last sips of her third coffee of the day, and debated whether a fourth cup would have her crawling on the ceiling by lunchtime.

โ€œSo, umโ€”Cooperโ€™s good?โ€ she asked her mother, setting her coffee cup atop the paper that held the sequence of numbers and letters from Sofieโ€™s arm. Randall had now deemed it safe enough to discuss the boy on the phone. Bryce supposed itโ€™d be weird not to, since her parents had just publicly adopted the kid.

โ€œHeโ€™s an exceptionally bright boy,โ€ Ember said, and Bryce could hear the smile in her voice. โ€œHeย appreciates my art.โ€

Bryce sighed at the ceiling. โ€œThe surest test of intelligence out there.โ€

โ€œDo you know he hasnโ€™t been to school in more than three years?โ€ Emberโ€™s voice sharpened. โ€œThree years.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s awful. Has he โ€ฆ ah โ€ฆ talked about his โ€ฆ previous home?โ€

Her mom caught her meaning. โ€œNo. He wonโ€™t talk about it, and Iโ€™m not going to push. Milly Garkunos said to let him bring it up on his own time.โ€

โ€œMilly Garkunos suddenly became a child psychiatrist?โ€

โ€œMilly Garkunos is a good neighbor, Bryce Adelaide Quinlan.โ€

โ€œYeah, and a busybody. Donโ€™t tell her anything.โ€ Especially about this. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t,โ€ Ember hissed.

Bryce nodded, even though her mom couldnโ€™t see through the phone. โ€œLet the kid quietly adjust.โ€

โ€œAm I his caretaker, or are you, Bryce?โ€

โ€œPut Randall on the phone. Heโ€™s the voice of reason.โ€

โ€œRandall is beside himself with happiness at having another child in the house, and is currently on a walk through the woods with Cooper, showing him the lay of the land.โ€

Bryce smiled at that. โ€œI loved doing that with him.โ€

Emberโ€™s voice softened. โ€œHe loved doing that with you, too.โ€

Bryce sighed again. โ€œThanks again, Mom. I know this was a shockโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m glad you included us, Bryce. And gave us this gift.โ€ Bryceโ€™s throat ached. โ€œPlease be careful,โ€ Ember whispered. โ€œI know you think Iโ€™m overbearing and annoying, but itโ€™s only because I want the best for you. I want you to be safe, and happy.โ€

โ€œI know, Mom.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s plan on a girlsโ€™ weekend this winter. Someplace nice and cold.

Skiing?โ€

โ€œNeither of us skis.โ€

โ€œWe can learn. Or sit by the fire and drink spiked hot chocolate.โ€

Here was the mom she adored, the one sheโ€™d worshipped as a kid. โ€œItโ€™s a plan.โ€

A ripple of fire, of pure power, shuddered through the building. Silence flowed in its wake, the usual background noise halting. โ€œI gotta get back to work,โ€ Bryce said quickly.

โ€œOkay, love you.โ€

โ€œLove you,โ€ Bryce said, and had barely hung up when the Autumn King walked in.

โ€œTrash gets dumped in the back,โ€ she said without looking up.

โ€œI see your irreverence has not been altered by your new immortality.โ€ Bryce lifted her head. This wasnโ€™t how she wanted to start her day.

Sheโ€™d already spent her walk to work with Ruhn, needing him to explain to her twice about the plan to have Queen Hypaxia escorted by Ithan and the dragon in exchange for the witch-queen contacting Connorโ€™s spirit on the equinox. Sheโ€™d been slightly nauseated at that, but had grunted her approval before she left him on the street, telling him to give Hypaxia her number in case she needed anything. A few minutes later, Ruhn had forwarded the queenโ€™s contact information.

Her father sniffed her. โ€œWould you like to explain to meย whyย you have mated with Athalar, when you are betrothed to a Fae Prince?โ€

โ€œBecause heโ€™s my mate?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know half-breeds could have such things.โ€ She bared her teeth. โ€œReal classy.โ€

Fire filled his eyes. โ€œDid you not consider that I arranged for your union with Cormac out of your best interests? The interests of your offspring?โ€

โ€œYou meanย yourย best interests. As if Iโ€™d ever let you within a hundred miles of any child of mine.โ€

โ€œCormac is powerful, his household strong. I want you in Avallen because it is aย safehold. Even the Asteri cannot pierce its mists without permission, so old is the magic that guards it.โ€

Bryce stilled. โ€œYouโ€™re full of shit.โ€

โ€œAm I? Did you not kill an Archangel this spring? Are you not now at the mercy of the Asteri? Are demons not once more creeping through the Northern Riftโ€”in greater numbers than ever before?โ€

โ€œLike you give a single fuck about my safety.โ€

Flame rippled around him, then vanished. โ€œI am your father, whether you like it or not.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t seem to care about that until I surpassed you in power.โ€

โ€œThings change. I found watching Micah harm you to be โ€ฆ unsavory.โ€ โ€œMust have really bothered you, since youโ€™ve seemed to have no issue

with harming others yourself.โ€ โ€œExplain.โ€

โ€œOh, come on. Donโ€™t give me that blank fucking look. The last Starborn Prince. You killed him because he was special and not you, and everyone knows it.โ€

Her father threw back his head and laughed. โ€œIs that what you think?

That I killed my rival for spite?โ€ She said nothing.

โ€œIs that what prompted you to hide your gift all these years? Concern that Iโ€™d do the same to you?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ It was partly true. Her mother had been the one whoโ€™d thought that.

The Autumn King shook his head slowly and sat in the chair opposite her desk. โ€œEmber fed you too many lies born of her irrational fears.โ€

โ€œAnd what about the scar on her face? Was that a lie, too? Or an irrational fear?โ€

โ€œI have already told you that I regret that more than you know. And that I loved Ember deeply.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think you know what that word means.โ€

Smoke curled from his shoulders. โ€œAt least I understand what it means to use my household name.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œPrincess Bryce Danaan. That was the name you gave the Governor, as well as the director of the Crescent City Ballet, isnโ€™t it? And what your lawyerโ€”Marc, is it?โ€”called you in his letter to the Astronomer, justifying the fact that you and your brother had commandeered four of his slaves.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

Her father smiled faintly. โ€œYou purchased influence with my name. The royal name. You bought it, and there are no returns, Iโ€™m afraid.โ€

Her blood went cold.

โ€œThe legal paperwork for your official name change is already filed.โ€

โ€œYou fucking change my name and I willย killย you.โ€ Starlight flared at her chest.

โ€œThreatening your king is punishable by death.โ€ โ€œYou will never be my king.โ€

โ€œOh, I am. You declared fealty by using my name, your title. It is done.โ€ Rage surged through her, rendering her mute. He went on, enjoying every second of it, โ€œI wonder how your mother shall react.โ€

Bryce shot out of her chair, slamming her hands on the desk. Light shimmered at her fingertips.

Her father didnโ€™t so much as flinch. He looked at her hands, then her face, and said blandly, โ€œYou are now officially a Princess of the Fae. I expect you to act as such.โ€

Her fingers curled on the desk, her long nails gouging the wood. โ€œYou haveย no right.โ€

โ€œI have every right. And you had the right not to use your royal privileges, but you chose otherwise.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™tย know.โ€ He couldnโ€™t get away with this. Sheโ€™d call Marc immediately. See if he and his team could find some way out of it.

โ€œIgnorance is no excuse,โ€ her father said, cold amusement frosting his face. โ€œYou are now Bryce Adelaide Danaan.โ€

Bile burned her throat. Sheโ€™d never heard anything more hateful. She was Bryce Adelaide Quinlan. Sheโ€™d never stop being a Quinlan. Her motherโ€™s daughter.

Her father continued, โ€œYou will maintain appearances with Cormac for as long as I command you to.โ€ He rose, glancing again at her handsโ€”the lines sheโ€™d gouged in the desk thanks to that new Vanir strength. His eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat is that number there?โ€

She flipped over the piece of paper on which sheโ€™d written the sequence of numbers and letters on Sofieโ€™s body. But despite her rage and disgust, she managed to ask, โ€œYou know it?โ€

He scanned her face. โ€œI will admit to turning a blind eye to the recklessness of your brother, but I would think you, Princess, would be more careful. The Asteri wonโ€™t come to kill me first. Or even Athalar. Theyโ€™ll go right to Nidaros.โ€

Her stomach twisted. โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€ What did the sequence from Sofieโ€™s arm have to do with this? Had he known Sofie? She didnโ€™t dare ask. Her father stalked for her office door, graceful as a leopard.

But he paused on the threshold, attention going to the star on her chest. โ€œI know what it is youโ€™re searching for. Iโ€™ve been seeking it for a long, long time.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ she sneered. โ€œAnd what is that?โ€

The Autumn King stepped into the dimness of the stacks. โ€œThe truth.โ€

Juniper didnโ€™t attend dance class that evening, and Madame Kyrah didnโ€™t so much as look at Bryce.

Though everyone else did. There were glares and whispers.

So inappropriate. What an entitled brat.

Can youย imagineย ever doing that to a friend?

Bryce left class during the five-minute break and didnโ€™t return.

She found a bench in a quiet part of the Oracleโ€™s Park and slumped onto the wooden slats, tugging her hat low over her face.

She was a fucking princess. Yes, sheโ€™d been one before today, but โ€ฆ

A folder full of documents had been delivered right before sheโ€™d gone to class. In it had been a new scooter registration, proof of name change, and a credit card. A sleek, black credit card withย HRH Bryce Danaanย stamped on the front. A long, golden leash stretched from it to her father. And his bank account. Sheโ€™d shoved everything into a drawer in her desk and locked it.

How could she tell her mother? How could she tell Randall?

Sheโ€™d been so fuckingย stupid. She wished Danika were with her. Wished June didnโ€™t hate her guts, that Fury wasnโ€™t hundreds of miles to the north. With her parents, who already had enough to deal with, without her telling them about this spectacular fuckup.

And yeah, she knew if she called Hunt, heโ€™d find her in two seconds, but โ€ฆ She wanted to talk to another female. Someone who might understand.

She dialed before she could second-guess herself.

Thirty minutes later, Bryce waited at a pizza counter, nursing a beer, watching people begin to queue at the alley food stalls as night fell, the baking temperature with it.

The witch-queen entered so casually that Bryce might not have noticed if it hadnโ€™t been for Ithanโ€™s presence. He sat at one of the small tables in the alley, clad in an old sunball T-shirt and track pants, looking for all the world like a guy out to meet a friend. Except for the outline of the handgun tucked into the back of his waistband. The knife she knew was in his boot.

No sign of the dragon, though. Unless Ariadne was somewhere out of sight.

Bryce said to Hypaxia, โ€œNice jeans.โ€

The witch peered down at herself, the light green blouse, charcoal biker jacket, and tight black jeans, the sensible flats and pretty gold bracelet. A matching gold brooch of Cthona adorned the lapel of her jacket. โ€œThank you. Ithan suggested I blend in.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not wrong,โ€ Bryce said, glancing at the wolf sizing up every person on the street. She said to Hypaxia, โ€œOrder what you want and weโ€™ll pay the tab when we leave.โ€

The witch strode the ten feet to the display in the tiny shop, then quietly ordered. If the male behind the counter recognized her, he didnโ€™t let on.

Hypaxia took a position at the counter overlooking the alley. Ithan lifted his brows high. She nodded. All was fine.

Bryce said to her, โ€œHeโ€™s pretty intense about the guard duty.โ€ โ€œVery professional,โ€ Hypaxia said approvingly.

Bryce offered a friendly smile. โ€œThanks for coming. I know my call was super random. I just โ€ฆ I had a crazy day. And thought you might have some advice.โ€

Hypaxia smiled at last. โ€œIโ€™m pleased you did. Iโ€™ve wished to see you since our encounter this spring.โ€ When the queen had been playing medwitch. And โ€ฆ

It all came rushing back.

Hypaxia had freed Hunt from the halo. Had removed it. Had given him the ability to slay Sandriel and come aid Bryceโ€”

โ€œThank you for what you did,โ€ Bryce said, throat tight. โ€œFor helping Hunt.โ€

Hypaxiaโ€™s smile only widened. โ€œFrom your scent, it seems as if you and he have made things โ€ฆ permanent. Congratulations.โ€

Bryce casually rocked back on her heels. โ€œThank you.โ€ โ€œAnd howโ€™s your thigh?โ€

โ€œNo more pain. Also thanks to you.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear it.โ€

Bryce sipped from her beer as the server brought over the queenโ€™s pizza. She murmured to him, and the male brought the second slice out to Ithan, who grinned over at Hypaxia and held up the slice in a long-distance cheers. Still no sign of the dragon. Maybe that was a good thing.

When Hypaxia had taken a bite, Bryce said, โ€œSo, I, uh โ€ฆโ€ โ€œAh. The reason you asked me here?โ€

Bryce sighed. โ€œYeah. My fatherโ€”the Autumn Kingโ€”visited today. Said that because I used his name for a few things, it meant I had accepted my royal title. I tried to refuse, but heโ€™d already done the paperwork. Iโ€™m now officially a princess.โ€ She almost choked on the last word.

โ€œJudging from your expression, this is not good news.โ€

โ€œNo. I know youโ€™re pretty much a stranger, and that you were born into your title and never had the choice to be normal, but โ€ฆ I feel like Iโ€™m drowning here.โ€

A gentle, warm hand landed atop hers. โ€œI am sorry he did that to you.โ€

Bryce studied a stain on the counter, unsure if she could look at the witch without crying.

Hypaxia said, โ€œWhy do you think I came here this spring? I wanted to be normal. If only for a few months. I know what youโ€™re feeling.โ€

Bryce shook her head. โ€œMost people wouldnโ€™t get it. Theyโ€™d think,ย Oh, poor you, you have to be a princess. But Iโ€™ve spent my entire life avoiding this male and his court. Iย hateย him. And I just walked right into his clutches like a fucking idiot.โ€ She heaved a shuddering breath. โ€œI think Huntโ€™s answer to all of this would be to go flambรฉ my father until he reversed this bullshit, but โ€ฆ I wanted to see if you had any alternate ideas.โ€

The queen took another bite of her pizza, contemplating. โ€œWhile I might enjoy the sight of Hunt Athalar flambรฉing the Autumn King โ€ฆโ€ Bryceโ€™s mouth quirked up at that. โ€œI think youโ€™re right that a more diplomatic method is required.โ€

โ€œSo you think thereโ€™s a way out of this?โ€ Marc had agreed to help, but hadnโ€™t sounded hopeful.

โ€œI think there are ways to manage this. Manage your father.โ€

Bryce nodded. โ€œRuhn mentioned you had some โ€ฆ drama with your coven.โ€

A soft laugh. โ€œI suppose thatโ€™s a good way to put it.โ€

โ€œHe also mentioned that you had some unusual tutors growing up.โ€ Ghosts, heโ€™d told her on the phone this morning.

โ€œYes. My dearest friends.โ€

โ€œNo wonder you wanted to bust out and escape, if you had only the dead for company.โ€

Hypaxia chuckled. โ€œThey were wonderful companions, but yes. They encouraged me to come here, actually.โ€

โ€œAre they with you on this trip?โ€

โ€œNo. They cannot leave the confines of the keep where I was raised. My motherโ€™s summoning spell bound them there. It is โ€ฆ Perhaps itโ€™s the reason I returned to my homelands again.โ€

โ€œNot to be queen?โ€

โ€œThat too,โ€ Hypaxia said quickly. โ€œBut โ€ฆ they are my family.โ€ โ€œAlong with the Hind,โ€ Bryce said carefully.

โ€œI do not count her as kin.โ€

Bryce was grateful for the shift in their conversation, even if for a few minutes. She needed time to sort through her raging feelings. โ€œYou look nothing alike.โ€

โ€œThat is not why I donโ€™t consider her a sister.โ€ โ€œNo, I know that.โ€

โ€œOur mother was as golden-haired and tan-skinned as she. My father, howeverโ€”I take after his coloring.โ€

โ€œAnd who was the Hindโ€™s father?โ€

โ€œA rich and powerful stag shifter in Pangera. My mother never told me the details of how they came to breed. Why she agreed to it. But the Hind inherited her fatherโ€™s powers, not the witch gifts, and thus she was sent at age three to live with him.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s horrible.โ€ When Bryce had been three โ€ฆ her mother had fought nearly to the death to keep her from the Autumn Kingโ€™s clutches. Her mother had done all that, only for Bryce to wind up right here. Shame and dread filled her. She knew it was only a matter of time until her mom found out, but she couldnโ€™t tell herโ€”not yet.

โ€œIt was part of their deal,โ€ Hypaxia explained. โ€œWhatever gift Lidia inherited, that was where she would live. She spent the first three years with my mother, but when the shifter gifts manifested, his kin came to claim her. My mother never saw her again.โ€

โ€œWas your mom bothered by what she became?โ€

โ€œI was not privy to those thoughts,โ€ Hypaxia said tightly enough that Bryce knew to drop it. โ€œBut it has never sat well with me.โ€

โ€œAre you going to see her while sheโ€™s here?โ€

โ€œYes. Iโ€™ve never met her before. I was born several years after she was sent away.โ€

Bryce drank again. โ€œIโ€™d suggest not getting your hopes up.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not. But we digress from your troubles.โ€ The queen sighed. โ€œI donโ€™t know Fae royal laws, so Iโ€™m afraid I canโ€™t tell you definitively, but โ€ฆ at this point, I think the only ones who might be able to stop your father are the Asteri.โ€

โ€œI was afraid of that.โ€ Bryce rubbed her temples. โ€œJust wait until Hunt hears.โ€

โ€œHe wonโ€™t be pleased?โ€

โ€œWhy the Hel would he be pleased?โ€

โ€œBecause you are mated. And now your father has made you a princess.

Which makes him โ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh gods,โ€ Bryce said, choking. โ€œHunt is a fuckingย prince.โ€ She laughed bitterly. โ€œHeโ€™s going to go ballistic. Heโ€™ll hate it even more than I do.โ€ She laughed again, a bit hysterically. โ€œSorry. Iโ€™m, like, literally imagining his face when I tell him tonight. I need to record it or something.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t tell if this is a good or bad thing.โ€

โ€œBoth. The Autumn King expects me to keep up my engagement with Prince Cormac.โ€

โ€œEven though your scent makes it clear youโ€™re with another?โ€

โ€œApparently.โ€ She didnโ€™t want to think about that. She finished the beer, then gathered up her plate and Hypaxiaโ€™s to toss in the trash. She quickly paid their tab, and as she pocketed the receipt, she asked the queen, โ€œWanna walk a little? Itโ€™s not as hot as it was.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like that very much.โ€

They kept silent, unnoticed by those around them as they entered the alley. Ithan fell into step a polite distance behind. The dragon, if she was there, was nowhere to be seen.

โ€œSo your brother told you of the situation with my motherโ€™s coven, then.โ€

โ€œYeah. That sucks. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

They reached the river a block away and turned down the quay. Dry, warm wind rustled the palms lining it. Hypaxia studied the stars. โ€œI had such visions for what the future would be like. Of witches returning to power. Of being with the person who I โ€ฆโ€ She cleared her throat.

โ€œYouโ€™re seeing someone?โ€ Bryce asked, brows lifting.

The queenโ€™s face shuttered. โ€œNo.โ€ Hypaxia blew out a long breath. โ€œThe relationship wasnโ€™t possible anymore. I might have continued it, but it was not โ€ฆ They didnโ€™t want to.โ€

Bryce blinked. If Hypaxia was in love with someone else โ€ฆ Fuck. โ€œPoor Ruhn,โ€ she said.

Hypaxia smiled sadly. โ€œI think your brother wants to marry me as little as I want to marry him.โ€

โ€œRuhnโ€™s hot, though. So are you. Maybe the attraction will kick in.โ€ Bryce owed her brother at least an attempt to try to play up his good

attributes.

A laugh. โ€œIt takes far more than that.โ€

โ€œYeah, but heโ€™s a good guy. Like, aย reallyย good guy. And I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™m even saying this, but โ€ฆ while Iโ€™m sure the person you love is great, you really couldnโ€™t do better than Ruhn.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll remember those words.โ€ Hypaxia toyed with one of her long curls. โ€œThe engagement to your brother was an attempt to prevent my motherโ€™s coven from gaining too much power.โ€

Bryce said, โ€œBut you said youย wantย the witches to return to power. Or is it that you want your people to regain their powerโ€”but you want your motherโ€™s coven to โ€ฆ be excluded from that?โ€ Hypaxia nodded gravely. Bryceโ€™s brows knit. โ€œArenโ€™t the witches already powerful?โ€

โ€œNot as we once were. For generations now, mighty bloodlines have run dry, magic withering. Like they are โ€ฆ siphoned into nothing. My motherโ€™s coven has no interest in discovering why. They only want us to become even more subservient to the Asteri.โ€

This female had freed Hunt in pure defiance of the Asteri. Was Hypaxia a rebel? Did she dare ask her? How much had Ithan and Ruhn told her yesterday?

Dark mists curled on the other side of the river. She asked quietly, โ€œDid your mom summon your tutors from the Bone Quarter? Or another eternal resting place?โ€

โ€œSuch things did not exist when my tutors walked the earth.โ€ Bryce gaped. โ€œYour tutors predate the Asteriโ€™s arrival?โ€

Hypaxia narrowed her eyes in warning for Bryce to keep her voice down. โ€œYes. They were already long dead when the Northern Rift opened.โ€

โ€œThey remember a time before the Asteriโ€”when Parthos still stood?โ€ Bryce ventured.

โ€œYes. One of my tutors, Palania, taught mathematics and science at its academy. She was born in the city surrounding it, and died there, too. So did generations of her family.โ€

โ€œThe Asteri donโ€™t like people talking about these things. That humans accomplished so much before their arrival.โ€

โ€œThey are classic conquerors.โ€ Hypaxia gazed toward the Bone Quarter. โ€œThey have conquered even death in this world. Spirits that once rested peacefully are now herded into these โ€ฆ zones.โ€

Bryce started. โ€œYou know about that?โ€

โ€œThe dead speak to me of their horrors. When my mother died, I had to do some things that โ€ฆ Letโ€™s say my motherโ€™s coven was not happy that I found a way for my mother to avoid going to an eternal resting place. Even if doing so sacrificed my ability to speak with her forever.โ€ Shadows darkened her eyes. โ€œBut I could not send her to a zone like the Bone Quarter. Not when I knew what would become of her.โ€

โ€œWhy not tell everyone? Why not tell the whole world?โ€

โ€œWho would believe me? Do you know what the Asteri would do to me? To my people? They would slaughter every single witch to punish me. My mother knew it as wellโ€”and also chose not to say anything. If you are wise, you will not, either. I shall help Ithan Holstrom and his kin as best I can on the equinox, but there are limits.โ€

Bryce halted by the rail overlooking the night-dark river. โ€œWhere did the dead go before the Asteri arrived? Did your tutors ever tell you that?โ€

Her mouth softened into a smile. โ€œNo. But they told me it was โ€ฆ good.

Peaceful.โ€

โ€œDo you think the souls that are harvested here ever wind up there?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Bryce blew out a breath. โ€œWell, this is the most depressing girl talk Iโ€™ve ever had.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the first girl talk Iโ€™ve ever had.โ€

โ€œNormal girls dish about normal shit.โ€ โ€œYou and I are not normal girls.โ€

No, they werenโ€™t. They were โ€ฆ a queen and a princess. Meeting as equals. Talking about things that could get them killed.

โ€œIt can be very lonely, to wear a crown,โ€ Hypaxia said quietly, as if reading her thoughts. โ€œBut Iโ€™m glad to have you to speak with, Bryce.โ€

โ€œMe too.โ€ And she might not be anywhere near done fighting her fatherโ€™s bullshit, but โ€ฆ it was a comfort to know that she had the witch-queen on her side, at least. And other allies.

Ithan stood guard twenty feet behind. His stare met hers, bright in the dimness. She opened her mouth to call him over, to ask how much heโ€™d heard.

But at that moment, a massive, scaled gray beast leapt over the quay railing.

And before Bryce could shout, it barreled into Ithan and closed its jaws around his throat.
