Chapter no 50

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Bryce struggled to breathe. โ€œHow did Danika and Sofie know each other?โ€ โ€œDanika found Sofie using her Vanir powers,โ€ Emile said. โ€œShe could

smell Sofieโ€™s gift, or something. She needed Sofie to do something for her

โ€”Danika couldnโ€™t do it because she was too recognizable. But Sofie โ€ฆโ€ Emile toed the carpet. โ€œShe wasnโ€™t โ€ฆโ€

Bryce cut in, โ€œSofie was a human. Or passed as one. Sheโ€™d be ignored by most. What did Danika need her to do?โ€

Emile shook his head. โ€œI donโ€™t know. I wasnโ€™t able to talk to Sofie for very long when we were in Kavalla.โ€

Huntโ€™s wide eyes shone with surprise, his anger at her seemingly forgotten for the moment. She pulled a slip of paper from her pocket. โ€œThese letters and numbers were found on your sisterโ€™s body. Any idea what they mean?โ€

Emile bounced his knee. โ€œNo.โ€

Damn it. Bryce twisted her mouth to the side.

Head bowed, Emile whispered, โ€œIโ€™m sorry I donโ€™t know anything else.โ€

Hunt cleared his throat. Reached in front of Bryce to clasp the boyโ€™s shoulder. โ€œYou did good, kid. Really good. We owe you.โ€

Emile offered Hunt a wobbly smile.

Yet Bryceโ€™s mind spun. Danika had needed Sofie to find somethingย big.ย And though it had taken her years after Danika had died, Sofie had finally found it. And it had indeed been big enough that the Hind had killed her, rather than risking Sofie spreading it โ€ฆ

Hunt said, drawing her from her thoughts, โ€œBryce.โ€

Her mate nodded pointedly to the window a few feet away.

โ€œGive us a minute,โ€ she said to Emile with a smile, and walked over to the window, Hunt trailing her.

Hunt whisper-hissed, โ€œWhat do we do with him now? We canโ€™t leave him here. Itโ€™s only a matter of time until the Viper Queen figures out that he doesnโ€™t have powers. And we canโ€™t bring him with us. Pippa might very well come sniffing now that we destroyed that suit and they really do need a thunderbirdโ€™s powerโ€”โ€

โ€œPippa Spetsos is a bad woman,โ€ Emile said from the couch, paling. Hunt had the good sense to look embarrassed that his little fit had been overheard. โ€œSofie warned me about her. After I got on the boat, she wanted to question me โ€ฆ I ran the moment no one was looking. But she and her Lightfall unit tracked meโ€”all the way to the marshes. I hid in the reeds and was able to shake them there.โ€

โ€œSmart.โ€ Bryce pulled out her phone. โ€œAnd we know all about Pippa, donโ€™t worry. She wonโ€™t get anywhere near you.โ€ She glared at Hunt. โ€œYou really think I didnโ€™t plan this out?โ€

Hunt crossed his arms, brows high, but Bryce was already dialing. โ€œHey, Fury. Yeah, weโ€™re here. Bring the car around.โ€

โ€œYou brought Axtar into this?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s one of the few people I trust to escort him to his new home.โ€

Fear flooded Emileโ€™s eyes. Bryce walked back to the couch and ruffled his hair. โ€œYouโ€™ll be safe there. I promise.โ€ She gave Hunt a warning look over her shoulder. She wasnโ€™t going to reveal more until theyโ€™d left. But she said to Emile, โ€œGo use the bathroom. Youโ€™re in for a long ride.โ€

Hunt was still sorting through his racing feelings when they walked out of the Meat Market, Emile hidden beneath the shadows of a hooded sweatshirt. As promised, the Viper Queen had let them leave, no questions asked.

Sheโ€™d only smiled at Bryce. Hunt suspected, with a sinking feeling, that she already knew Emile had no powers. That sheโ€™d taken in the kid because, despite his potential, there was one thing that might be more valuable to her one day: Bryce owing her a favor.

Hel yeah, he was going to have his little alphahole fit.

But he tucked away the thoughts when he found Fury Axtar leaning against a sleek black sedan, her arms crossed. Emile stumbled a step. Hunt didnโ€™t blame the kid.

Bryce threw her arms around her friend, saying, โ€œThank youย soย much.โ€

Fury pulled back and turned to survey Emile as if she were looking at a particularly nasty bug. โ€œNot much meat on him.โ€

Bryce nudged her with an elbow. โ€œSo get him some snacks on the road.โ€

โ€œSnacks?โ€ Fury said, but opened one of the rear doors.

โ€œYou know,โ€ Bryce drawled, โ€œgarbage food that provides zero nutrition for our bodies, butย lotsย of nutrition for our souls.โ€

How could she be so โ€ฆ glib about what sheโ€™d done? Any number of people would likely kill her for it. If not Cormac, then the River Queen or Ophion or the Hindโ€”

Fury shook her head, chuckling, but beckoned to the boy. โ€œIn you go.โ€ Emile balked.

Fury flashed a feral smile, โ€œYouโ€™re too short for the front. Airbag safety regulations.โ€

โ€œYou just donโ€™t want him messing with the radio,โ€ Bryce muttered. Fury didnโ€™t deny it, and Emile didnโ€™t say anything as he climbed into the back seat. He had no bag, no belongings.

Hunt remembered that feeling. After his mother had died, heโ€™d had no traces or reminders or comforts of the child heโ€™d been, the mother who had sung him to sleep.

Nausea churned in his gut. Hunt said to the kid, โ€œDonโ€™t let Fury boss you around.โ€

Emile lifted wide, pleading eyes to Hunt. Gods, how had everyone forgotten that he was only a kid? Everyone except Bryce.

Shahar would never have done something like this, risked so much for someone who could do her absolutely no good. But Bryce โ€ฆ Hunt couldnโ€™t stop himself from stepping closer to her. From brushing his wing against her in a silent apology.

Bryce stepped beyond his reach. Fair enough. Heโ€™d been an asshole.

She asked Fury, โ€œYouโ€™ve got the address?โ€

โ€œYes. Weโ€™ll be there in eight hours. Seven, if we donโ€™t bother with snacks.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s a kid. He needs snacks,โ€ Hunt cut in.

But Fury ignored him and stalked around the car, sliding into the driverโ€™s seat. Two handguns were buckled to her thighs. He had a feeling more were in the glove compartment and trunk. And then there was whatever Vanir power she possessed that made Fury Axtar, well โ€ฆ Fury Axtar. โ€œYouโ€™re lucky I love you, Quinlan. And that Juniper didnโ€™t want this kid here for another minute.โ€

Hunt caught the way Bryceโ€™s throat bobbed, but she lifted a hand in farewell. Then she approached the still-open back door, where she said to Emile, โ€œYour name isnโ€™t Emile Renast anymore, okay?โ€

Panic sparked in the kidโ€™s face. Bryce touched his cheek, as if she couldnโ€™t help it. The last of Huntโ€™s anger dissolved entirely.

Bryce was saying, โ€œAll the documents will be waiting for you. Birth certificate, adoption papers โ€ฆโ€

โ€œAdoption?โ€ Emile croaked.

Bryce grinned winningly at the kid. โ€œYouโ€™re part of the Quinlan-Silago clan now. Weโ€™re a crazy bunch, but we love each other. Tell Randall to make you chocolate croissants on Sundays.โ€

Hunt had no words. She hadnโ€™t only found a place for this lost kid. Sheโ€™d found him a new family.ย Herย family. His throat tightened to the point of pain, his eyes stinging. But Bryce kissed Emileโ€™s cheek, shut the door, and thumped the car roof. Fury sped off down the cobblestone street, hooked a sharp left, and was gone.

Slowly, Bryce turned back to him.

โ€œYouโ€™re sending him to your parents,โ€ he said quietly.

Her eyes iced over. โ€œDid I miss the memo where I needed your approval to do so?โ€

โ€œFor Urdโ€™s sake, thatโ€™s not why I was mad.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care if youโ€™re mad,โ€ she said, flickering with light. โ€œJust because weโ€™re f**king doesnโ€™t mean I answer to you.โ€

โ€œPretty sure itโ€™s a little bit more than f**king.โ€

She bristled, and his anger bristled with it. But he remembered where they wereโ€”right in front of the Viper Queenโ€™s headquarters. Where anyone might see. Or try to start shit.

โ€œI have to go to work,โ€ Bryce said, practically biting out each word. โ€œFine. So do I.โ€

โ€œFine.โ€ She didnโ€™t wait for him before striding off.

Hunt rubbed his eyes and shot skyward. He knew Bryce was well aware that he trailed her from above as she wove through the tangle of streets that made up the Meat Market, banking northward toward the CBD only when sheโ€™d crossed Crone Street into the safety of the Old Square.

But she didnโ€™t look up. Not once.

โ€œI only have ten minutes before I need to go to the archives,โ€ Bryce said to her brother as he ushered her into his house an hour later. โ€œIโ€™m already behind as Hel at work.โ€

Steaming at Hunt, sheโ€™d used the long walk to process all that had happened with Emile and the Viper Queen. To pray that Fury didnโ€™t scare the living daylights out of the kid before he reached her parentsโ€™ house in Nidaros. And contemplate whether sheโ€™d maybe overreacted a smidgen to Huntโ€™s anger at her not telling him.

Bryce had been just turning down the block to the archives when Ruhn called with his vague request to come over immediately. Sheโ€™d thumbed in a quick message to her boss about a doctorโ€™s appointment running late, and raced right over here.

She dumped her purse beside the front door. โ€œPlease start explaining why this was so urgent that you needed me toโ€” Oh.โ€

Sheโ€™d assumed it had something to do with Ithan, or that maybe Declan had found something. Which was why sheโ€™d sprinted from FiRo, in her stupid heels, in the stupid heat, and was now a sweaty mess.

She hadnโ€™t expected a beautiful female clad in nothing but a blanket, standing against the foyer wall like some trapped animal. Her crimson eyes narrowed with warning.

Bryce offered a smile to the female against the wall. โ€œUh, hey. Everything โ€ฆ all right?โ€ She hissed to Ruhn over her shoulder, โ€œWhere are her clothes?โ€

โ€œShe wouldnโ€™t wear them,โ€ Ruhn hissed back. โ€œBelieve me, Dec tried.โ€ He pointed to an untouched pile of male clothes by the stairs.

But the female was scanning Bryce from her heels to her head. โ€œYou came to see the mystics. You blazed with starlight.โ€

Bryce peered back. It wasnโ€™t the female mystic, but โ€ฆ she turned to see Ithan, looking guilty, on the couch. With three fire sprites floating around his head.

Her blood turned to acid. A plump sprite sprawled on his knee, beaming at Bryce. The memory of Lehabah burned bright and searing.

โ€œSo, Ithanย mightย have gotten pissed when he went back to the Astronomer and found out that the female mystic is a wolf,โ€ Ruhn was saying, โ€œand heย mightย have done something rash and taken something he shouldnโ€™t have, and then these morons freed them from the rings โ€ฆโ€

Bryce whirled to the female against the wall. โ€œYou were in one of the rings?โ€

The red eyes flared again. โ€œYes.โ€

Bryce asked Ithan, โ€œWhy did you go back there?โ€

โ€œI wanted to be sure about Connor,โ€ he said. She didnโ€™t miss the tone of accusationโ€”that she hadnโ€™t been as concerned as he was. Neither did Ruhn, who tensed at her side.

Bryce swallowed hard. โ€œIs he โ€ฆ okay?โ€

Ithan dragged a hand through his hair. โ€œI donโ€™t know. I need to find out.โ€

Bryce nodded gravely, then managed to face the three sprites in the living room. Managed to lift her chin and ask, voice shaking only slightly, โ€œDo you know a sprite named Lehabah?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ said Malana, the full-bodied sprite so similar to Lele that Bryce could barely stand to face her. โ€œWhat clan is she?โ€

Bryce inhaled a shuddering breath. The males had hushed. โ€œLehabah claimed she was a descendant of Queen Ranthia Drahl, Queen of Embers.โ€

One of the slender spritesโ€”Rithi, maybe?โ€”puffed with red flame. โ€œAn heir of Ranthia?โ€

A chill went down Bryceโ€™s arms. โ€œShe said so.โ€

โ€œFire sprites do not lie about their lineage,โ€ said the third sprite, Sasa. โ€œHow do you know her?โ€

โ€œI knew her,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œShe died three months ago. She gave her life to save mine.โ€

The three sprites floated toward Bryce. โ€œThe Drahl line has long been scattered to the winds,โ€ Sasa said sadly. โ€œWe donโ€™t know how many remain. To lose even one โ€ฆโ€ She bowed her head, flame dimming to a soft yellow.

The dragon in the hall said to Bryce, โ€œYou were a friend to this sprite.โ€

Bryce twisted to the female. โ€œYes.โ€ Damn her tight throat. To the three sprites, she said, โ€œI freed Lehabah before she died. It was her โ€ฆโ€ She could barely get the words out. โ€œIt was her first and final act of freedom to choose to save me. She was the bravest person Iโ€™ve ever met.โ€

Malana drifted to Bryce, pressing a warm, burning hand to her cheek. โ€œIn her honor, we shall call you an ally of our people.โ€

Bryce didnโ€™t miss the slave tattoo on Malanaโ€™s wrist. The other two sprites bore the same marking. She slowly turned to Ithan. โ€œIโ€™m glad you stole them from that creep.โ€

โ€œIt didnโ€™t feel right to leave them.โ€

Something in her chest melted, and she suppressed the urge to hug her old friend, to cry at the glimmer of the male sheโ€™d once known. Bryce asked Ruhn instead, โ€œCanโ€™t we find some way out of this, Mr. Fancy Prince?โ€

โ€œMarcโ€™s on it,โ€ Declan said, holding up his phone. โ€œHe thinks you two might be able to use your royal sway to either commandeer them on behalf of the royal household or get the Astronomer to accept payment for them rather than press charges.โ€

โ€œPayment?โ€ Bryce blurted.

โ€œRelax,โ€ Flynn said, smirking. โ€œWe got the money, Princess.โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ve seen your daddyโ€™s fancy house,โ€ Bryce quipped, earning a scowl from Flynn and anย ooooohย from the sprites.

Bryce suppressed her smile and lifted a brow at Ruhn. Sheโ€™d f**ked up one friendship thanks to pulling princess rank, but this โ€ฆ For Lehabah, sheโ€™d do it. โ€œYou in, Chosen One?โ€

Ruhnโ€™s mouth quirked to the side. โ€œHel yeah, Starborn.โ€

Bryce waved him off and turned fully to the dragon in the hallway. โ€œIโ€™m guessing you cost โ€ฆ a lot.โ€

โ€œMore than even a prince and princess can afford,โ€ the dragon said with a note of bitterness. โ€œI was a gift to the Astronomer from an Archangel.โ€

โ€œMust have been some reading the Astronomer did for them,โ€ Flynn muttered.

The dragon hedged, โ€œIt was.โ€

Her eyes cooled to jet-black cinders. To leave her at the Astronomerโ€™s mercy, to go back into that tiny little ring to sit on his filthy old fingers โ€ฆ

โ€œLook,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œif Marcโ€™s right about the commandeering slaves thing for royal services, then Ruhn and I can make up some shit to explain why we need you.โ€

โ€œWhy help me?โ€ the dragon asked.

Bryce tapped her wrist. โ€œMy mate was a slave. I canโ€™t turn a blind eye to it anymore. No one should.โ€ And since sheโ€™d already helped out one lost soul today, why not add a few more?

โ€œWho is your mate?โ€ the dragon said.

โ€œWait,โ€ Flynn objected. โ€œYou guys are mates? Like, mates-mates?โ€ โ€œMates-mates,โ€ Ruhn said.

โ€œDoes the Autumn King know?โ€ Declan asked.

Bryce could have sworn Ruhn glanced at Ithan, who was busy with something on his phone, before she said, โ€œLetโ€™s say it was officially confirmed last night.โ€

Flynn whistled.

Bryce rolled her eyes, but faced the dragon again. โ€œHis name is Hunt Athalar.โ€

Recognition kindled in the dragonโ€™s eyes. โ€œOrion Athalar?โ€ โ€œOne and the same,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œYou know him?โ€

Her mouth pressed into a thin line. โ€œOnly by reputation.โ€

โ€œAh.โ€ Bryce asked, a shade awkwardly, โ€œWhatโ€™s your name?โ€ โ€œAriadne.โ€

โ€œAri for short,โ€ Flynn chimed in. โ€œNever Ari,โ€ the dragon snapped.

Bryceโ€™s mouth twitched. โ€œWell, Ariadne, expect these idiots to piss you off on an hourly basis. But try not to burn the place down.โ€ She winked at the dragon. โ€œFeel free to toast Flynn when heโ€™s a smart-ass, though.โ€

Flynn flipped her off, but Bryce turned toward the doorโ€”only to find three sprites in her face. โ€œYou should speak to our queen about Lehabahโ€™s bravery,โ€ Sasa said. โ€œIrithys is not a descendant of Ranthia, but she would like to hear your tale.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m pretty busy,โ€ Bryce said quickly. โ€œGotta go to work.โ€

But Malana said to her sister, โ€œSheโ€™d need toย findย Irithys first.โ€ She explained to Bryce, โ€œLast we heard, before we went into the rings all those years ago, she had been sold to one of the Asteri. But perhaps theyโ€™d let you speak to her.โ€

โ€œWhy would I need to speak to her?โ€ Bryce asked as she kept heading for the door, aware of Ariadneโ€™s keen gaze.

โ€œBecause princesses need allies,โ€ Rithi said, and Bryce halted.

Bryce sighed. โ€œIโ€™m going to need a really big drink after work,โ€ she said, and walked out the door, her phone already at her ear.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Jesiba said by way of answering.

โ€œThe Astronomer. You know him?โ€ Bryce had zero idea what the old male was, but โ€ฆ he seemed like heโ€™d be in the House of Flame and Shadow.

There was silence from the sorceress before she said, โ€œWhy?โ€ โ€œLooking for some strings to pull.โ€

Jesiba laughed quietly. โ€œYouโ€™re the one who stole his rings?โ€

Maybe they had some sorcerer message-board support group. โ€œLetโ€™s say a friend did.โ€

โ€œAnd now you wantโ€”what? My money to pay for them?โ€

โ€œI want you to convince him to accept the money my friends will pay for them.โ€

โ€œOne of those rings is priceless.โ€ โ€œYeah, the dragon. Ariadne.โ€

โ€œIs that what she calls herself?โ€ A low laugh. โ€œFascinating.โ€ โ€œYou know her?โ€

โ€œOf her.โ€

Bryce crossed a busy intersection, keeping her head down as a passing tourist gawked too long in her direction. At least no dreadwolves prowled the streets. โ€œSo? Can you help or not?โ€

Jesiba grunted. โ€œIโ€™ll make a call. No promises.โ€ โ€œWhat are you going to say?โ€

โ€œThat he owes me a favor.โ€ Dark promise glittered in the words. โ€œAnd now you do, too.โ€

โ€œGet in line,โ€ Bryce said, and hung up.

By the time Bryce reached her little office in the archives, relieved she hadnโ€™t needed to pull her princess rank again, she was ready to bask in the AC and kick back in her chair. Ready to maybe send a message to Hunt to feel out whether he was still pissed. But all plans vanished at the sight of the envelope on her desk.

It contained an analysis of dragon fire, dating back five thousand years. It was in a language Bryce didnโ€™t know, but a translation had been included. Jesiba had scribbledย Good luckย at the top.

Well, now she knew why the Astronomer kept Ariadne in a ring. Not for lightโ€”but for protection.

Among its many uses, the ancient scholar had written,ย dragon fire is one of the few substances proven to harm the Princes of Hel. It can burn even the Prince of the Pitโ€™s dark hide.

Yeah, Ariadne was valuable. And if Apollion was readying his armies

โ€ฆ Bryce had no intention of letting the dragon return to the Astronomerโ€™s clutches.
