Chapter no 33

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Ruhn said nothing as the Hind produced a deck of cards from the pocket of her imperial uniform.

Ithan played the role of confused jock, alternating ignorance with bored distraction as he watched the game above the bar. The Hind shuffled the deck, cards cracking like breaking bones.

On the tableโ€™s fourth side, the Harpy lounged in her seat and marked his every move. Her wingsโ€”a matte black, like theyโ€™d been built for stealthโ€” spilled onto the floor. She wore the familiar battle-suit of the 45thโ€” Sandrielโ€™s former prized legion. The Harpy, along with the Hammer, had been one of its notoriously cruel leaders.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe weโ€™ve met,โ€ the Hind said, flexing and breaking the cards again. Her hands were deft, unfaltering. Unscarred. She wore a gold ring crowned with a square, clean-cut ruby. A subtle hint of wealth.

Ruhn forced himself to smirk. โ€œIโ€™m flattered I was so high on your priority list today.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re my half sisterโ€™s fiancรฉ, are you not?โ€ A lifeless smile. The opposite of Hypaxiaโ€™s warmth and wisdom. The Hind was only about twenty years older than her sisterโ€”forty-seven years oldโ€”far closer in age than most Vanir siblings. But they shared nothing in common, it seemed. โ€œIt would be rude not to introduce myself upon arrival. I already visited your fatherโ€™s villa. He informed me that you were here.โ€

Cormac must have arrived right before the Hind, to feed the lie to the Autumn King. Thank the gods.

Ruhn snorted. โ€œNice to meet you. Iโ€™m busy.โ€

The Harpyโ€™s skin was as pale as the belly of a fish, set off by her jet-black hair and eyes. She said, โ€œYouโ€™re as impertinent as you appear, princeling.โ€

Ruhn flicked his lip ring with his tongue. โ€œIโ€™d hate to disappoint.โ€

The Harpyโ€™s features contorted in anger. But the Hind said mildly, โ€œWeโ€™ll play poker, I think. Isnโ€™t that what you play on Tuesday nights?โ€

Ruhn repressed his shiver of fear. The standing game wasnโ€™t a secret, but โ€ฆ how much did she know about him?

Ithan remained the portrait of boredom, gods bless him.

So Ruhn said to the Hind, โ€œAll right, youโ€™re keeping tabs on me for your sisterโ€™s sake.โ€ Was it mere coincidence sheโ€™d sought him out now? What had Mordoc told her about Ithanโ€™s whereabouts this morning? Ruhn asked the Harpy, โ€œBut why the Hel areย youย here?โ€

The Harpyโ€™s thin lips stretched into a grotesque smile. She reached a pale hand toward Ithanโ€™s muscled shoulder as she said, โ€œI wanted to survey the goods.โ€

Without looking at her, the wolf snatched her fingers, squeezing hard enough to show that he could break bone if he wished. Slowly, he turned, eyes brimming with hate. โ€œYou can look, but donโ€™t touch.โ€

โ€œYou break it, you buy it,โ€ the Harpy crooned, wriggling her fingers.

She liked thisโ€”the edge of pain.

Ithan bared his teeth in a feral grin and released her hand. The pup had balls, Ruhn would give him that. Ithan looked at the TV again as he said, โ€œPass.โ€

The Harpy bristled, and Ruhn said, โ€œHeโ€™s a little young for you.โ€ โ€œAnd what about you?โ€ A killerโ€™s sharp smile.

Ruhn leaned back in his chair, swigging from his whiskey. โ€œIโ€™m engaged. I donโ€™t fuck around.โ€

The Hind dealt the cards with a swift, sure grace. โ€œExcept with fauns, of course.โ€

Ruhn kept his face unmoved. How did she know about the female at the party? He met her golden eyes. A perfect match for the Hammer in beauty and temperament. She hadnโ€™t been at the Summit this spring, thank the gods. The Harpy had been there, though, and Ruhn had done his damn best to stay away from her.

The Hind scooped up her cards without breaking his stare. โ€œI wonder if my sister shall learn of that.โ€

โ€œIs this some sort of shakedown?โ€ Ruhn fanned out his cards. A decent handโ€”not great, but heโ€™d won with worse.

The Hindโ€™s attention bobbed to her cards, then back to his face. This female had most likely killed Sofie Renast. A silver torque glinted at the base of her throat. Like sheโ€™d killed and broken so many rebels that the collar of her uniform couldnโ€™t fit all the darts. Did the necklace grow with each new death she wrought? Would his own be marked on that collar?

The Hind said, โ€œYour father suggested I meet you. I agreed.โ€ Ruhn suspected that his father hadnโ€™t just told her his location to provide an alibi, but also to warn him to keep the fuck out of trouble.

Ithan picked up his cards, scanned them, and swore. The Harpy said nothing as she examined her own hand.

The Hind held Ruhnโ€™s gaze as the game began. She was the spitting image of Luna, with her upswept chignon, the regal angle of her neck and jaw. As coldly serene as the moon. All she needed was a pack of hunting hounds at her sideโ€”

And she had them, in her dreadwolves.

How had someone so young risen in the ranks so swiftly, gained such notoriety and power? No wonder she left a trail of blood behind her.

โ€œCareful now,โ€ the Harpy said with that oily smile. โ€œThe Hammer doesnโ€™t share.โ€

The Hindโ€™s lips curved upward. โ€œNo, he doesnโ€™t.โ€ โ€œAs Ithan said,โ€ Ruhn drawled, โ€œpass.โ€

The Harpy glowered, but the Hindโ€™s smile remained in place. โ€œWhere is your famed sword, Prince?โ€

With Bryce. In the Bone Quarter. โ€œLeft it at home this morning,โ€ Ruhn answered.

โ€œI heard you spent the night at your sisterโ€™s apartment.โ€

Ruhn shrugged. Was this interrogation merely to fuck with him? Or did the Hind know something? โ€œI didnโ€™t realize you had the authority to grill Aux leaders in this city.โ€

โ€œThe authority of the Asteri extends over all. Including Starborn Princes.โ€

Ruhn caught the bartenderโ€™s eye, signaling for another whiskey. โ€œSo this is just to prove youโ€™ve got bigger balls?โ€ He draped an arm over the back of his chair, cards in one hand. โ€œYou want to head up the Aux while youโ€™re in town, fine. I could use a vacation.โ€

The Harpyโ€™s teeth flashed. โ€œSomeone should rip that tongue from your mouth. The Asteri would flay you for such disrespect.โ€

Ithan drew another card and said mildly, โ€œYouโ€™ve got some nerve, coming to our city and trying to start shit.โ€

The Hind replied with equal calm, โ€œSo do you, lusting after the female your brother loved.โ€

Ruhn blinked.

Ithanโ€™s eyes turned dangerously dark. โ€œYouโ€™re full of shit.โ€

โ€œAm I?โ€ the Hind said, drawing a card herself. โ€œOf course, as my visit here will likely entail meeting the princess, I looked into her history. Found quite a chain of messages between you two.โ€

Ruhn thanked the bartender as the male brought over a whiskey and then quickly retreated. Ruhn said into Ithanโ€™s mind,ย Sheโ€™s trying to rile you. Ignore her.

Ithan didnโ€™t answer. He only said to the Hind, voice sharpening, โ€œBryce is my friend.โ€

The Hind drew another card. โ€œYears of pining in secret, years of guilt and shame for feeling what he does, for hating his brother whenever he talks about Miss Quinlan, for wishing thatย heย had been the one whoโ€™d met her firstโ€”โ€

โ€œShut up,โ€ Ithan growled, rattling the glasses on the table, pure feral wolf.

The Hind went on, unfazed, โ€œLoving her, lusting for her from the sidelines. Waiting for the day when she would realize thatย heย was the one she was meant to be with. Playing his little heart out on the sunball field, hoping sheโ€™d notice him at last. But then big brother dies.โ€

Ithan paled.

The Hindโ€™s expression filled with cool contempt. โ€œAnd he hates himself even more. Not only for losing his brother, for not being there, but because of the one, traitorous thought he had after learning the news. That the path to Bryce Quinlan was now cleared. Did I get that part right?โ€

โ€œShut your fucking mouth,โ€ Ithan growled, and the Harpy laughed.

Calm down, Ruhn warned the male. But the Hind said, โ€œCall.โ€

Mind reeling, Ruhn laid out the decent hand heโ€™d gotten. The Harpy put hers down. Good. Heโ€™d beaten her. The Hind gracefully spread hers across the table.

A winning hand. Beating Ruhn by a fraction.

Ithan didnโ€™t bother to show his cards. Heโ€™d already shown them, Ruhn realized.

The Hind smiled again at Ithan. โ€œYou Valbarans are too easy to break.โ€ โ€œFuck you.โ€

The Hind rose, gathering her cards. โ€œWell, this has been delightfully dull.โ€

The Harpy stood with her. Black talons glinted at the angelโ€™s fingertips. โ€œLetโ€™s hope they fuck better than they play poker.โ€

Ruhn crooned, โ€œIโ€™m sure there are Reapers whoโ€™ll stoop to fuck you.โ€

The Hind snickered, earning a glare from the Harpy that the deer shifter ignored. The Harpy hissed at Ruhn, โ€œI do not take being insulted lightly, princeling.โ€

โ€œGet the Hel out of my bar,โ€ Ruhn snarled softly.

She opened her mouth, but the Hind said, โ€œWeโ€™ll see you soon, Iโ€™m sure.โ€ The Harpy understood that as a command to leave and stormed out the door onto the sunny street. Where life, somehow, continued onward.

The Hind paused on the threshold before she left, though. Peered over her shoulder at Ruhn, her silver necklace glinting in the sunlight trickling in. Her eyes lit with unholy fire.

โ€œTell Prince Cormac I send my love,โ€ the Hind said.

Bryce was one breath away from calling the Autumn King when the door to the apartment opened. And apparently, she looked a Hel of a lot worse than her brother or Ithan, because they immediately demanded to know what had happened to her.

Hunt, nursing a beer at the kitchen counter, said, โ€œEmile and Sofie arenโ€™t in the Bone Quarter. But we found out some major shit. Youโ€™d better sit down.โ€

Yet Bryce went up to her brother, scanning him from the piercings along his ear to his tattooed arms and ass-kicking boots. Not one sleek black hair out of place, though his skin was ashen. Ithan, standing at his side, didnโ€™t give her the chance to turn to him before approaching the fridge and grabbing a beer of his own.

โ€œYouโ€™re all right?โ€ Bryce asked Ruhn, who was frowning at the dirt and blood on herโ€”the wound on her back had thankfully closed, but was still tender.

Tharion said from where he sat on the couch, feet propped on the coffee table, โ€œEveryone is fine, Legs. Now letโ€™s sit down like a good little rebel family and tell each other what the Hel happened.โ€

Bryce swallowed. โ€œAll right. Yeahโ€”sure.โ€ She scanned Ruhn again, and his eyes softened. โ€œYou scared the shit out of me.โ€

โ€œWe couldnโ€™t answer our phones.โ€

She didnโ€™t let herself reconsider before throwing her arms around her brother and squeezing tight. A heartbeat later, he gently hugged her back, and she could have sworn he shuddered in relief.

Huntโ€™s phone buzzed, and Bryce pulled away from Ruhn. โ€œCelestina wants me at the Comitium for Ephraimโ€™s arrival,โ€ Hunt said. โ€œShe wants her triarii assembled.โ€

โ€œOh, Ephraimโ€™s already here.โ€ Ithan dropped onto the couch. โ€œWe learned the hard way.โ€

โ€œYou saw him?โ€ Bryce asked.

โ€œHis cronies,โ€ Ithan said, not looking at her. โ€œPlayed poker with them and everything.โ€

Bryce whirled on Ruhn. Her brother nodded gravely. โ€œThe Hind and the Harpy showed up to the bar where we were lying low. I canโ€™t tell if it was because Mordoc sniffed around the alley where Cormac made the intel drop or what. But it was โ€ฆ not great.โ€

โ€œDo they know?โ€ Hunt asked quietly, storms in his eyes. โ€œAbout you?

About us?โ€

โ€œNo idea,โ€ Ruhn said, toying with his lip ring. โ€œI think weโ€™d be dead if they did, though.โ€

Hunt blew out a sigh. โ€œYeah, you would be. They would have taken you in for questioning already.โ€

โ€œThe Hind is a fucking monster,โ€ Ithan said, turning on the TV. โ€œHer and the Harpy, both.โ€

โ€œI could have told you that,โ€ Hunt said, finishing his beer and striding to where Bryce stood before the glass dining table. She didnโ€™t stop him as he slid a hand over her jaw, cupping her cheek, and kissed her. Just a swift brush of their mouths, but it was a claiming and a promise.

โ€œRain check?โ€ he murmured onto her lips. Right. The dinner and the hotelโ€”

She frowned pitifully. โ€œRain check.โ€

He chuckled, but grew deadly serious. โ€œBe careful. Iโ€™ll be back as soon as I can. Donโ€™t go looking for that kid without me.โ€ He kissed her forehead before leaving the apartment.

Bryce offered up silent prayers to Cthona and Urd to protect him. โ€œGlad you two finally sorted it out,โ€ Tharion said from the couch.

Bryce flipped him off. But Ruhn sniffed her carefully. โ€œYou โ€ฆ smell different.โ€

โ€œShe smells like the Istros,โ€ Ithan said from the couch.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s โ€ฆโ€ Ruhnโ€™s brows twitched toward each other, and he scratched at the buzzed side of his head. โ€œI canโ€™t explain it.โ€

โ€œStop sniffing me, Ruhn.โ€ Bryce hopped onto the couch on Tharionโ€™s other side. โ€œItโ€™s gross. Story time?โ€
