Chapter no 50 – Park

Eleanor & Park

Eleanor pushed her curls out of her face one by one, like she was gathering her wits by hand. โ€˜I have to go,โ€™ she said.

She was making more sense now, and more eye contact, but Park still felt like someone had turned the world upside down and was shaking it.

โ€˜You could talk to your mom tomorrow,โ€™ he said. โ€˜Everything might look different in the morning.โ€™

โ€˜You saw what he wrote on my books,โ€™ she said evenly. โ€˜Would you want me to stay there?โ€™

โ€˜I โ€ฆ I just donโ€™t want you to leave,โ€™ he said. โ€˜Where would you go? To your dadโ€™s house?โ€™

โ€˜No, he doesnโ€™t want me.โ€™ โ€˜But if you explained โ€ฆโ€™ โ€˜He doesnโ€™tย wantย me.โ€™ โ€˜Then โ€ฆ where?โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t know.โ€™ She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. โ€˜My uncle said I could spend the summer with him. Maybe heโ€™ll let me come up to St Paul early.โ€™

โ€˜St Paul, Minnesota.โ€™ She nodded.

โ€˜But โ€ฆโ€™ Park looked in Eleanorโ€™s eyes, and her hands fell to the table. โ€˜I know,โ€™ she sobbed, slumping forward. โ€˜I know โ€ฆโ€™

There was no room to sit at the table next to her, so he dropped to his knees and pulled her onto the dusty linoleum floor.

Eleanor

โ€˜When are you leaving?โ€™ he asked. He pushed her hair out of her face and held it behind her head.

โ€˜Tonight,โ€™ she said, โ€˜I canโ€™t go home.โ€™

โ€˜How are you going to get there? Have you called your uncle?โ€™ โ€˜No. I donโ€™t know. I thought Iโ€™d take the bus.โ€™

She was going to hitchhike.

She figured she could walk as far as the Interstate, then sheโ€™d stick out her thumb for station wagons and minivans. Family cars. If she hadnโ€™t been raped or murdered โ€“ or sold into white slavery โ€“ by Des Moines, sheโ€™d call her uncle collect. Heโ€™d come to get her, even if it was just to bring her home.

โ€˜You canโ€™t take the bus by yourself,โ€™ Park said. โ€˜I donโ€™t have a better plan.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll drive you,โ€™ he said. โ€˜To the bus station?โ€™ โ€˜To Minnesota.โ€™

โ€˜Park, no, your parents will never let you.โ€™ โ€˜So I wonโ€™t ask.โ€™

โ€˜But your dad will kill you.โ€™ โ€˜No,โ€™ he said, โ€˜heโ€™ll ground me.โ€™ โ€˜For life.โ€™

โ€˜Do you think I even care about that right now?โ€™ He held her face in his hands. โ€˜Do you think I care about anything but you?โ€™
