Chapter no 18 – โ€‹โ€‹LEO

The Lost Hero

โ€ŒIt seemed he slept only for seconds,ย but when Piper shook him awake, the daylight was fading.โ€Œ

โ€œWeโ€™re here,โ€ she said.

Leo rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. Below them, a city sat on a cliff overlooking a river. The plains around it were dusted with snow, but the city itself glowed warmly in the winter sunset. Buildings crowded together inside high walls like a medieval town, way older than any place Leo had seen before. In the center was an actual castleโ€”at least Leo assumed it was a castleโ€”with massive red brick walls and a square tower with a peaked, green gabled roof.

โ€œTell me thatโ€™s Quebec and not Santaโ€™s workshop,โ€ Leo said.

โ€œYeah, Quebec City,โ€ Piper confirmed. โ€œOne of the oldest cities in North America. Founded around sixteen hundred or so?โ€

Leo raised an eyebrow. โ€œYour dad do a movie about that too?โ€

She made a face at him, which Leo was used to, but it didnโ€™t quite work with her new glamorous makeup. โ€œIย readย sometimes, okay? Just because Aphrodite claimed me, doesnโ€™t mean I have to be an airhead.โ€

โ€œFeisty!โ€ Leo said. โ€œSo you know so much, whatโ€™s that castle?โ€ โ€œA hotel, I think.โ€

Leo laughed. โ€œNo way.โ€

But as they got closer, Leo saw she was right. The grand entrance was bustling with doormen, valets, and porters taking bags. Sleek black luxury cars idled in the drive. People in elegant suits and winter cloaks hurried to get out of the cold.

โ€œThe North Wind is staying in a hotel?โ€ Leo said. โ€œThat canโ€™t beโ€”โ€ โ€œHeads up, guys,โ€ Jason interrupted. โ€œWe got company!โ€

Leo looked below and saw what Jason meant. Rising from the top of the tower were two winged figuresโ€”angry angels, with nasty-looking swords.

Festus didnโ€™t like the angel guys. He swooped to a halt in midair, wings beating and talons bared, and made a rumbling sound in his throat that Leo recognized. He was getting ready to blow fire.

โ€œSteady, boy,โ€ Leo muttered. Something told him the angels would not take kindly to getting torched.

โ€œI donโ€™t like this,โ€ Jason said. โ€œThey look like storm spirits.โ€

At first Leo thought he was right, but as the angels got closer, he could see they were much more solid thanย venti. They looked like regular teenagers except for their icy white hair and feathery purple wings. Their bronze swords were jagged, like icicles. Their faces looked similar enough that they mightโ€™ve been brothers, but they definitely werenโ€™t twins.

One was the size of an ox, with a bright red hockey jersey, baggy sweatpants, and black leather cleats. The guy clearly had been in too many fights, because both his eyes were black, and when he bared his teeth, several of them were missing.

The other guy looked like heโ€™d just stepped off one of Leoโ€™s momโ€™s 1980s rock album coversโ€”Journey, maybe, or Hall & Oates, or something even lamer. His ice-white hair was long and feathered into a mullet. He wore pointy-toed leather shoes, designer pants that were way too tight, and a god-awful silk shirt with the top three buttons open. Maybe he thought he looked like a groovy love god,ย but the guy couldnโ€™t have weighed more than ninety pounds, and he had a bad case of acne.

The angels pulled up in front of the dragon and hovered there, swords at the ready.

The hockey ox grunted. โ€œNo clearance.โ€ โ€œโ€™Scuse me?โ€ Leo said.

โ€œYou have no flight plan on file,โ€ explained the groovy love god. On top of his other problems, he had a French accent so bad Leo was sure it was fake. โ€œThis is restricted airspace.โ€

โ€œDestroy them?โ€ The ox showed off his gap-toothed grin.

The dragon began to hiss steam, ready to defend them. Jason summoned his golden sword, but Leo cried, โ€œHold on!

Letโ€™s have some manners here, boys. Can I at least find out who has the honor of destroying me?โ€

โ€œI am Cal!โ€ the ox grunted. He looked very proud of himself, like heโ€™d taken a long time to memorize that sentence.

โ€œThatโ€™s short for Calais,โ€ the love god said. โ€œSadly, my brother cannot say words with more than two syllablesโ€”โ€

โ€œPizza! Hockey! Destroy!โ€ Cal offered.

โ€œโ€”which includes his own name,โ€ the love god finished.

โ€œI am Cal,โ€ Cal repeated. โ€œAnd this is Zethes! My brother!โ€

โ€œWow,โ€ Leo said. โ€œThat was almost three sentences, man! Way to go.โ€ Cal grunted, obviously pleased with himself.

โ€œStupid buffoon,โ€ his brother grumbled. โ€œThey make fun of you. But no matter. I am Zethes, which is short for Zethes. And the lady thereโ€”โ€ He winked at Piper, but the wink was more like a facial seizure. โ€œShe can call me anything she likes. Perhaps she would like to have dinner with a famous demigod before we must destroy you?โ€

Piper made a sound like gagging on a cough drop. โ€œThatโ€™s โ€ฆ a truly horrifying offer.โ€

โ€œIt is no problem.โ€ Zethes wiggled his eyebrows. โ€œWe are a very romantic people, we Boreads.โ€

โ€œBoreads?โ€ Jason cut in. โ€œDo you mean, like, the sons of Boreas?โ€ โ€œAh, so youโ€™ve heard of us!โ€ Zethes looked pleased. โ€œWe are our

fatherโ€™s gatekeepers. So you understand, we cannot have unauthorized

people flying in his airspace on creaky dragons, scaring the silly mortal peoples.โ€

He pointed below, and Leo saw that the mortals were starting to take notice. Several were pointing upโ€”not with alarm, yetโ€”more with confusion and annoyance, like the dragon was a traffic helicopter flying too low.

โ€œWhich is sadly why, unless this is an emergency landing,โ€ Zethes said, brushing his hair out of his acne-covered face, โ€œwe will have to destroy you painfully.โ€

โ€œDestroy!โ€ Cal agreed, with a little more enthusiasm than Leo thought necessary.

โ€œWait!โ€ Piper said. โ€œThisย isย an emergency landing.โ€

โ€œAwww!โ€ Cal looked so disappointed, Leo almost felt sorry for him.

Zethes studied Piper, which of course heโ€™d already been doing. โ€œHow does the pretty girl decide this is an emergency, then?โ€

โ€œWe have to see Boreas. Itโ€™s totally urgent! Please?โ€ She forced a smile, which Leo figured mustโ€™ve been killing her; but she still had that blessing of Aphrodite thing going on, and she looked great. Something about her voice, tooโ€”Leo found himself believing every word. Jason was nodding, looking absolutely convinced.

Zethes picked at his silk shirt, probably making sure it was still open wide enough. โ€œWell โ€ฆ I hate to disappoint a lovely lady, but you see, my sister, she would have an avalanche if we allowed youโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd our dragon is malfunctioning!โ€ Piper added. โ€œIt could crash any minute!โ€

Festus shuddered helpfully, then turned his head and spilled gunk out of his ear, splattering a black Mercedes in the parking lot below.

โ€œNo destroy?โ€ Cal whimpered.

Zethes pondered the problem. Then he gave Piper another spasmodic wink. โ€œWell, you are pretty. I mean, youโ€™reย right. A malfunctioning dragon

โ€”this could be an emergency.โ€

โ€œDestroy them later?โ€ Cal offered, which was probably as close to friendly as he ever got.

โ€œIt will take some explaining,โ€ Zethes decided. โ€œFather has not been kind to visitors lately. But, yes. Come, faulty dragon people. Follow us.โ€

The Boreads sheathed their swords and pulled smaller weapons from their beltsโ€”or at least Leo thought they were weapons. Then the Boreads switched them on, and Leo realized they were flashlights with orange cones, like the ones traffic controller guys use on a runway. Cal and Zethes turned and swooped toward the hotelโ€™s tower.

Leo turned to his friends. โ€œI love these guys. Follow them?โ€ Jason and Piper didnโ€™t look eager.

โ€œI guess,โ€ Jason decided. โ€œWeโ€™re here now. But I wonder why Boreas hasnโ€™t been kind to visitors.โ€

โ€œPfft, he just hasnโ€™t met us.โ€ Leo whistled. โ€œFestus, after those flashlights!โ€

As they got closer, Leo worried theyโ€™d crash into the tower. The Boreads made right for the green gabled peak and didnโ€™t slow down. Then a section of the slanted roof slid open, revealing an entrance easily wide enough for Festus. The top and bottom were lined with icicles like jagged teeth.

โ€œThis cannot be good,โ€ Jason muttered, but Leo spurred the dragon downward, and they swooped in after the Boreads.

They landed in what must have been the penthouse suite; but the place had been hit by a flash freeze. The entry hall had vaulted ceilings forty feet high, huge draped windows, and lush oriental carpets. A staircase at the back of the room led up to another equally massive hall, and more corridors branched off to the left and right. But the ice made the roomโ€™s beauty a little frightening. When Leo slid off the dragon, the carpet crunched under his feet. A fine layer of frost covered the furniture. The curtains didnโ€™t budge because they were frozen solid, and the ice-coated windows let in weird watery light from the sunset. Even the ceiling was furry with icicles. As for the stairs, Leo was sure heโ€™d slip and break his neck if he tried to climb them.

โ€œGuys,โ€ Leo said, โ€œfix the thermostat in here, and I would totally move

in.โ€

โ€œNot me.โ€ Jason looked uneasily at the staircase. โ€œSomething feels

wrong. Something up there โ€ฆโ€

Festus shuddered and snorted flames. Frost started to form on his scales.

โ€œNo, no, no.โ€ Zethes marched over, though how he could walk in those pointy leather shoes, Leo had no idea. โ€œThe dragon must be deactivated. We canโ€™t have fire in here. The heat ruins my hair.โ€

Festus growled and spun his drill-bit teeth.

โ€œโ€™Sโ€™okay, boy.โ€ Leo turned to Zethes. โ€œThe dragonโ€™s a little touchy about the wholeย deactivationย concept. But Iโ€™ve got a better solution.โ€

โ€œDestroy?โ€ Cal suggested.

โ€œNo, man. You gotta stop with theย destroyย talk. Just wait.โ€ โ€œLeo,โ€ Piper said nervously, โ€œwhat are youโ€”โ€

โ€œWatch and learn, beauty queen. When I was repairing Festus last night, I found all kinds of buttons. Some, you doย notย want to know what they do. But others โ€ฆ Ah, here we go.โ€

Leo hooked his fingers behind the dragonโ€™s left foreleg. He pulled a switch, and the dragon shuddered from head to toe. Everyone backed away as Festus folded like origami. His bronze plating stacked together. His neck and tail contracted into his body. His wings collapsed and his trunk compacted until he was a rectangular metal wedge the size of a suitcase.

Leo tried to lift it, but the thing weighed about six billion pounds. โ€œUm

โ€ฆ yeah. Hold on. I thinkโ€”aha.โ€

He pushed another button. A handle flipped up on the top, and wheels clicked out on the bottom.

โ€œTa-da!โ€ he announced. โ€œThe worldโ€™s heaviest carry-on bag!โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s impossible,โ€ Jason said. โ€œSomething that big couldnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œStop!โ€ Zethes ordered. He and Cal both drew their swords and glared at Leo.

Leo raised his hands. โ€œOkay โ€ฆ whatโ€™d I do? Stay calm, guys. If it bothers you that much, I donโ€™tย haveย to take the dragon as carry-onโ€”โ€

โ€œWho are you?โ€ Zethes shoved the point of his sword against Leoโ€™s chest. โ€œA child of the South Wind, spying on us?โ€

โ€œWhat? No!โ€ Leo said. โ€œSon of Hephaestus. Friendly blacksmith, no harm to anyone!โ€

Cal growled. He put his face up to Leoโ€™s, and he definitely wasnโ€™t any prettier at point-blank, with his bruised eyes and bashed-in mouth. โ€œSmell fire,โ€ he said. โ€œFire is bad.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Leoโ€™s heart raced. โ€œYeah, well โ€ฆ my clothes are kind of singed, and Iโ€™ve been working with oil, andโ€”โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Zethes pushed Leo back at sword point. โ€œWe canย smellย fire, demigod. We assumed it was from the creaky dragon, but now the dragon is a suitcase. And I still smell fire โ€ฆ onย you.โ€

If it hadnโ€™t been like three degrees in the penthouse, Leo wouldโ€™ve started sweating. โ€œHey โ€ฆ look โ€ฆ I donโ€™t knowโ€”โ€ He glanced at his friends desperately. โ€œGuys, a little help?โ€

Jason already had his gold coin in his hand. He stepped forward, his eyes on Zethes. โ€œLook, thereโ€™s been a mistake. Leo isnโ€™t a fire guy. Tell

them, Leo. Tell them youโ€™re not a fire guy.โ€ โ€œUm โ€ฆโ€

โ€œZethes?โ€ Piper tried her dazzling smile again, though she looked a little too nervous and cold to pull it off. โ€œWeโ€™re all friends here. Put down your swords and letโ€™s talk.โ€

โ€œThe girl is pretty,โ€ Zethes admitted, โ€œand of course she cannot help being attracted to my amazingness; but sadly, I cannot romance her at this time.โ€ He poked his sword point farther into Leoโ€™s chest, and Leo could feel the frost spreading across his shirt, turning his skin numb.

He wished he could reactivate Festus. He needed some backup. But it wouldโ€™ve taken several minutes, even if he could reach the button, with two purple-winged crazy guys in his path.

โ€œDestroy him now?โ€ Cal asked his brother. Zethes nodded. โ€œSadly, I thinkโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Jason insisted. He sounded calm enough, but Leo figured he was about two seconds away from flipping that coin and going into full gladiator mode. โ€œLeoโ€™s just a son of Hephaestus. Heโ€™s no threat. Piper here is a daughter of Aphrodite. Iโ€™m the son of Zeus. Weโ€™re on a peaceful โ€ฆโ€

Jasonโ€™s voice faltered, because both Boreads had suddenly turned on him.

โ€œWhat did you say?โ€ Zethes demanded. โ€œYou are the son of Zeus?โ€ โ€œUm โ€ฆ yeah,โ€ Jason said. โ€œThatโ€™s a good thing, right? My name is

Jason.โ€

Cal looked so surprised, he almost dropped his sword. โ€œCanโ€™t be Jason,โ€ he said. โ€œDoesnโ€™t look the same.โ€

Zethes stepped forward and squinted at Jasonโ€™s face. โ€œNo, he is notย ourย Jason. Our Jason was more stylish. Not as much as meโ€”but stylish. Besides, our Jason died millennia ago.โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ Jason said. โ€œYourย Jason โ€ฆ you mean the original Jason? The Golden Fleece guy?โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Zethes said. โ€œWe were his crewmates aboard his ship, theย Argo, in the old times, when we were mortal demigods. Then we accepted immortality to serve our father, so I could look this good for all time, and my silly brother could enjoy pizza and hockey.โ€

โ€œHockey!โ€ Cal agreed.

โ€œBut Jasonโ€”ourย Jasonโ€”he died a mortal death,โ€ Zethes said. โ€œYou canโ€™t be him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ Jason agreed.

โ€œSo, destroy?โ€ Cal asked. Clearly the conversation was giving his two brain cells a serious workout.

โ€œNo,โ€ Zethes said regretfully. โ€œIf he is a son of Zeus, he could be the one weโ€™ve been watching for.โ€

โ€œWatching for?โ€ Leo asked. โ€œYou mean like in a good way: youโ€™ll shower him with fabulous prizes? Or watching for like in aย badย way: heโ€™s in trouble?โ€

A girlโ€™s voice said, โ€œThat depends on my fatherโ€™s will.โ€

Leo looked up the staircase. His heart nearly stopped. At the top stood a girl in a white silk dress. Her skin was unnaturally pale, the color of snow, but her hair was a lush mane of black, and her eyes were coffee brown. She focused on Leo with no expression, no smile, no friendliness. But it didnโ€™t matter. Leo was in love. She was the most dazzling girl heโ€™d ever seen.

Then she looked at Jason and Piper, and seemed to understand the situation immediately.

โ€œFather will want to see the one called Jason,โ€ the girl said. โ€œThen itย isย him?โ€ Zethes asked excitedly.

โ€œWeโ€™ll see,โ€ the girl said. โ€œZethes, bring our guests.โ€

Leo grabbed the handle of his bronze dragon suitcase. He wasnโ€™t sure how heโ€™d lug it up the stairs, but heย hadย to get next to that girl and ask her some important questionsโ€”like her e-mail address and phone number.

Before he could take a step, she froze him with a look. Notย literally

froze, but she might as well have. โ€œNot you, Leo Valdez,โ€ she said.

In the back of his mind, Leo wondered how she knew his name; but mostly he was just concentrating on how crushed he felt.

โ€œWhy not?โ€ He probably sounded like a whiny kindergartner, but he couldnโ€™t help it.

โ€œYou cannot be in the presence of my father,โ€ the girl said. โ€œFire and iceโ€”it would not be wise.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going together,โ€ Jason insisted, putting his hand on Leoโ€™s shoulder, โ€œor not at all.โ€

The girl tilted her head, like she wasnโ€™t used to people refusing her orders. โ€œHe will not be harmed, Jason Grace, unless you make trouble. Calais, keep Leo Valdez here. Guard him, but do not kill him.โ€

Cal pouted. โ€œJust a little?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ the girl insisted. โ€œAnd take care of his interesting suitcase, until Father passes judgment.โ€

Jason and Piper looked at Leo, their expressions asking him a silent question:ย How do you want to play this?

Leo felt a surge of gratitude. They were ready to fight for him. They wouldnโ€™t leave him alone with the hockey ox. Part of him wanted to go for it, bust out his new tool belt and see what he could do, maybe even summon a fireball or two and warm this place up. But the Boread guys scared him. And that gorgeous girl scared him more, even if he still wanted her number.

โ€œItโ€™s fine, guys,โ€ he said. โ€œNo sense causing trouble if we donโ€™t have to. You go ahead.โ€

โ€œListen to your friend,โ€ the pale girl said. โ€œLeo Valdez will be perfectly safe. I wish I could say the same for you, son of Zeus. Now come, King Boreas is waiting.โ€
