Chapter no 26 – ETHICSโ€Œ

Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)

THE COUNTER INย ALICEโ€™S BATHROOM WAS COVERED WITHย a thousand different products, all claiming to beautify a personโ€™s surface. Since everyone in this house was both perfect and impermeable, I could only assume that sheโ€™d bought most of these things with me in mind. I read the labels numbly, struck by the waste.

I was careful never to look in the long mirror.

Alice combed through my hair with a slow, rhythmic motion.

โ€œThatโ€™s enough, Alice,โ€ I said tonelessly. โ€œI want to go back to La Push.โ€

How many hours had I waited for Charlie toย finallyย leave Billyโ€™s house so that I could see Jacob? Each minute, not knowing if Jacob was still breathing or not, had seemed like ten lifetimes. And then, when at last Iโ€™d been allowed to go, to see for myself that Jacob was alive, the time had gone so quickly. I felt like Iโ€™d barely caught my breath before Alice was calling Edward, insisting that I keep up this ridiculous sleepover faรงade. It seemed so insignificant. . . .

โ€œJacobโ€™s still unconscious,โ€ Alice answered. โ€œCarlisle or Edward will call when heโ€™s awake. Anyway, you need to go see Charlie. He was there at Billyโ€™s house, he saw that Carlisle and Edward are back in from their trip, and heโ€™s bound to be suspicious when you get home.โ€

I already had my story memorized and corroborated. โ€œI donโ€™t care. I want to be there when Jacob wakes up.โ€

โ€œYou need to think of Charlie now. Youโ€™ve had a long day โ€” sorry, I know that doesnโ€™t begin to cover it โ€” but that doesnโ€™t mean that you can shirk your responsibilities.โ€ Her voice was serious, almost chiding. โ€œItโ€™s more important now than ever that Charlie stays safely in the dark. Play

your role first, Bella, and then you can do what you want second. Part of being a Cullen is being meticulously responsible.โ€

Of course she was right. And if not for this same reason โ€” a reason that was more powerful than all my fear and pain and guilt โ€” Carlisle would never have been able to talk me into leaving Jacobโ€™s side, unconscious or not.

โ€œGo home,โ€ Alice ordered. โ€œTalk to Charlie. Flesh out your alibi. Keep him safe.โ€

I stood, and the blood flowed down to my feet, stinging like the pricks of a thousand needles. Iโ€™d been sitting still for a long time.

โ€œThat dress is adorable on you,โ€ Alice cooed.

โ€œHuh? Oh. Er โ€” thanks again for the clothes,โ€ I mumbled out of courtesy rather than real gratitude.

โ€œYou need the evidence,โ€ Alice said, her eyes innocent and wide. โ€œWhatโ€™s a shopping trip without a new outfit? Itโ€™s very flattering, if I do say so myself.โ€

I blinked, unable to remember what sheโ€™d dressed me in. I couldnโ€™t keep my thoughts from skittering away every few seconds, insects running from the light. . . .

โ€œJacob is fine, Bella,โ€ Alice said, easily interpreting my preoccupation. โ€œThereโ€™s no hurry. If you realized how much extra morphine Carlisle had to give him โ€” what with his temperature burning it off so quickly โ€” you would know that heโ€™s going to be out for a while.โ€

At least he wasnโ€™t in any pain. Not yet.

โ€œIs there anything you want to talk about before you leave?โ€ Alice asked sympathetically. โ€œYou must be more than a little traumatized.โ€

I knew what she was curious about. But I had other questions.

โ€œWill I be like that?โ€ I asked her, my voice subdued. โ€œLike that girl Bree in the meadow?โ€

There were many things I needed to think of, but I couldnโ€™t seem to get her out of my head, the newborn whose other life was now โ€” abruptly โ€” over. Her face, twisted with desire for my blood, lingered behind my eyelids.

Alice stroked my arm. โ€œEveryone is different. But something like that, yes.โ€

I was very still, trying to imagine.

โ€œIt passes,โ€ she promised. โ€œHow soon?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œA few years, maybe less. It might be different for you. Iโ€™ve never seen anyone go through this whoโ€™s chosen it beforehand. It should be interesting to see how that affects you.โ€

โ€œInteresting,โ€ I repeated.

โ€œWeโ€™ll keep you out of trouble.โ€

โ€œI know that. I trust you.โ€ My voice was monotone, dead.

Aliceโ€™s forehead puckered. โ€œIf youโ€™re worried about Carlisle and Edward, Iโ€™m sure theyโ€™ll be fine. I believe Sam is beginning to trust us . . . well, to trust Carlisle, at least. Itโ€™s a good thing, too. I imagine the atmosphere got a little tense when Carlisle had to rebreak the fractures โ€”โ€

โ€œPlease, Alice.โ€ โ€œSorry.โ€

I took a deep breath to steady myself. Jacob had begun healing too quickly, and some of his bones had set wrong. Heโ€™d been out cold for the process, but it was still hard to think about.

โ€œAlice, can I ask you a question? About the future?โ€

She was suddenly wary. โ€œYou know I donโ€™t see everything.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that, exactly. But youย doย see my future, sometimes. Why is that, do you think, when nothing else works on me? Not what Jane can do, or Edward or Aro . . .โ€ My sentence trailed off with my interest level. My curiosity on this point was fleeting, heavily overshadowed by more pressing emotions.

Alice, however, found the question very interesting. โ€œJasper, too, Bella

โ€” his talent works on your body just as well as it does on anyone elseโ€™s. Thatโ€™s the difference, do you see it? Jasperโ€™s abilities affect the body physically. He really does calm your system down, or excite it. Itโ€™s not an illusion. And I see visions of outcomes, not the reasons and thoughts behind the decisions that create them. Itโ€™s outside the mind, not an illusion, either; reality, or at least one version of it. But Jane and Edward and Aro and Demetri โ€” they workย insideย the mind. Jane only creates an illusion of pain. She doesnโ€™t really hurt your body, you only think you feel it. You see, Bella? You are safe inside your mind. No one can reach you there. Itโ€™s no wonder that Aro was so curious about your future abilities.โ€

She watched my face to see if I was following her logic. In truth, her words had all started to run together, the syllables and sounds losing their meaning. I couldnโ€™t concentrate on them. Still, I nodded. Trying to look like I got it.

She wasnโ€™t fooled. She stroked my cheek and murmured, โ€œHeโ€™s going to be okay, Bella. I donโ€™t need a vision to know that. Are you ready to go?โ€

โ€œOne more thing. Can I ask you another question about the future? I donโ€™t want specifics, just an overview.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll do my best,โ€ she said, doubtful again. โ€œCan you still see me becoming a vampire?โ€ โ€œOh, thatโ€™s easy. Sure, I do.โ€

I nodded slowly.

She examined my face, her eyes unfathomable. โ€œDonโ€™t you know your own mind, Bella?โ€

โ€œI do. I just wanted to be sure.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m only as sure as you are, Bella. You know that. If you were to change your mind, what I see would change . . . or disappear, in your case.โ€

I sighed. โ€œThat isnโ€™t going to happen, though.โ€

She put her arms around me. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I canโ€™t reallyย empathize.ย My first memory is of seeing Jasperโ€™s face in my future; I always knew that he was where my life was headed. But I canย sympathize.ย Iโ€™m so sorry you have to choose between two good things.โ€

I shook off her arms. โ€œDonโ€™t feel sorry for me.โ€ There were people who deserved sympathy. I wasnโ€™t one of them. And there wasnโ€™t any choice to make โ€” there was just breaking a good heart to attend to now. โ€œIโ€™ll go deal with Charlie.โ€

I drove my truck home, where Charlie was waiting just as suspiciously as Alice had expected.

โ€œHey, Bella. How was your shopping trip?โ€ he greeted me when I walked into the kitchen. He had his arms folded over his chest, his eyes on my face.

โ€œLong,โ€ I said dully. โ€œWe just got back.โ€

Charlie assessed my mood. โ€œI guess you already heard about Jake, then?โ€

โ€œYes. The rest of the Cullens beat us home. Esme told us where Carlisle and Edward were.โ€

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œWorried about Jake. As soon as I make dinner, Iโ€™m going down to La Push.โ€

โ€œI told you those motorcycles were dangerous. I hope this makes you realize that I wasnโ€™t kidding around.โ€

I nodded as I started pulling things out of the fridge. Charlie settled himself in at the table. He seemed to be in a more talkative mood than usual.

โ€œI donโ€™t think you need to worry about Jake too much. Anyone who can cuss with that kind of energy is going to recover.โ€

โ€œJake was awake when you saw him?โ€ I asked, spinning to look at

him.

โ€œOh, yeah, he was awake. You should have heard him โ€” actually, itโ€™s

better you didnโ€™t. I donโ€™t think there was anyone in La Push whoย couldnโ€™tย hear him. I donโ€™t know where he picked up that vocabulary, but I hope he hasnโ€™t been using that kind of language around you.โ€

โ€œHe had a pretty good excuse today. How did he look?โ€

โ€œMessed up. His friends carried him in. Good thing theyโ€™re big boys, โ€™cause that kidโ€™s an armful. Carlisle said his right leg is broken, and his right arm. Pretty much the whole right side of his body got crushed when he wrecked that damn bike.โ€ Charlie shook his head. โ€œIf I ever hear of you riding again, Bella โ€”โ€

โ€œNo problem there, Dad. You wonโ€™t. Do you really think Jakeโ€™s okay?โ€ โ€œSure, Bella, donโ€™t worry. He was himself enough to tease me.โ€

โ€œTease you?โ€ I echoed in shock.

โ€œYeah โ€” in between insulting somebodyโ€™s mother and taking the Lordโ€™s name in vain, he said, โ€˜Bet youโ€™re glad she loves Cullen instead of me today, huh, Charlie?โ€™โ€

I turned back to the fridge so that he couldnโ€™t see my face.

โ€œAnd I couldnโ€™t argue. Edwardโ€™s more mature than Jacob when it comes to your safety, Iโ€™ll give him that much.โ€

โ€œJacobโ€™s plenty mature,โ€ I muttered defensively. โ€œIโ€™m sure this wasnโ€™t his fault.โ€

โ€œWeird day today,โ€ Charlie mused after a minute. โ€œYou know, I donโ€™t put much stock in that superstitious crap, but it was odd. . . . It was like Billy knew something bad was going to happen to Jake. He was nervous as

a turkey on Thanksgiving all morning. I donโ€™t think he heard anything I said to him.

โ€œAnd then, weirder than that โ€” remember back in February and March when we had all that trouble with the wolves?โ€

I bent down to get a frying pan out of the cupboard, and hid there an extra second or two.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I mumbled.

โ€œI hope weโ€™re not going to have a problem with that again. This morning, we were out in the boat, and Billy wasnโ€™t paying any attention to me or the fish, when all of a sudden, you could hear wolves yowling in the woods. More than one, and, boy, was it loud. Sounded like they were right there in the village. Weirdest part was, Billy turned the boat around and headed straight back to the harbor like they were calling to him personally. Didnโ€™t even hear me ask what he was doing.

โ€œThe noise stopped before we got the boat docked. But all of a sudden Billy was in the biggest hurry not to miss the game, though we had hours still. He was mumbling some nonsense about an earlier showing . . . of a live game? I tell you, Bella, it was odd.

โ€œWell, he found some game he said he wanted to watch, but then he just ignored it. He was on the phone the whole time, calling Sue, and Emily, and your friend Quilโ€™s grandpa. Couldnโ€™t quite make out what he was looking for โ€” he just chatted real casual with them.

โ€œThen the howling started again right outside the house. Iโ€™ve never heard anything like it โ€” I had goose bumps on my arms. I asked Billy โ€” had to shout over the noise โ€” if heโ€™d been setting traps in his yard. It sounded like the animal was in serious pain.โ€

I winced, but Charlie was so caught up in his story that he didnโ€™t notice.

โ€œโ€™Course I forgot all about that till just this minute, โ€™cause thatโ€™s when Jake made it home. One minute it was that wolf yowling, and then you couldnโ€™t hear it anymore โ€” Jakeโ€™s cussing drowned it right out. Got a set of lungs on him, that boy does.โ€

Charlie paused for a minute, his face thoughtful. โ€œFunny that some good should come out of this mess. I didnโ€™t think they were ever going to get over that fool prejudice they have against the Cullens down there. But somebody called Carlisle, and Billy was real grateful when he showed up. I

thought we should get Jake up to the hospital, but Billy wanted to keep him home, and Carlisle agreed. I guess Carlisle knows whatโ€™s best. Generous of him to sign up for such a long stretch of house calls.โ€

โ€œAnd . . .โ€ he paused, as if unwilling to say something. He sighed, and then continued. โ€œAnd Edward was really . . . nice. He seemed as worried about Jacob as you are โ€” like that was his brother lying there. The look in his eyes . . .โ€ Charlie shook his head. โ€œHeโ€™s a decent guy, Bella. Iโ€™ll try to remember that. No promises, though.โ€ He grinned at me.

โ€œI wonโ€™t hold you to it,โ€ I mumbled.

Charlie stretched his legs and groaned. โ€œItโ€™s nice to be home. You wouldnโ€™t believe how crowded Billyโ€™s little place gets. Seven of Jakeโ€™s friends all squished themselves into that little front room โ€” I could hardly breathe. Have you ever noticed how big those Quileute kids all are?โ€

โ€œYeah, I have.โ€

Charlie stared at me, his eyes abruptly more focused. โ€œReally, Bella, Carlisle said Jake will be up and around in no time. Said it looked a lot worse than it was. Heโ€™s going to be fine.โ€

I just nodded.

Jacob had looked so . . . strangely fragile when Iโ€™d hurried down to see him as soon as Charlie had left. Heโ€™d had braces everywhere โ€” Carlisle said there was no point in plaster, as fast as he was healing. His face had been pale and drawn, deeply unconscious though he was at the time. Breakable. Huge as he was, heโ€™d looked very breakable. Maybe that had just been my imagination, coupled with the knowledge that I was going to have to break him.

If only I could be struck by lightning and be split in two. Preferably painfully. For the first time, giving up being human felt like a true sacrifice. Like it might be too much to lose.

I put Charlieโ€™s dinner on the table next to his elbow and headed for the door.

โ€œEr, Bella? Could you wait just a second?โ€

โ€œDid I forget something?โ€ I asked, eyeing his plate.

โ€œNo, no. I just . . . want to ask a favor.โ€ Charlie frowned and looked at the floor. โ€œHave a seat โ€” this wonโ€™t take long.โ€

I sat across from him, a little confused. I tried to focus. โ€œWhat do you need, Dad?โ€

โ€œHereโ€™s the gist of it, Bella.โ€ Charlie flushed. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just feeling .

. . superstitious after hanging out with Billy while he was being so strange all day. But I have this . . . hunch. I feel like . . . Iโ€™m going to lose you soon.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be silly, Dad,โ€ I mumbled guiltily. โ€œYou want me to go to school, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œJust promise me one thing.โ€

I was hesitant, ready to rescind. โ€œOkay . . .โ€

โ€œWill you tell me before you do anything major? Before you run off with him or something?โ€

โ€œDad . . . ,โ€ I moaned.

โ€œIโ€™m serious. I wonโ€™t kick up a fuss. Just give me some advance notice.

Give me a chance to hug you goodbye.โ€

Cringing mentally, I held up my hand. โ€œThis is silly. But, if it makes you happy, . . . I promise.โ€

โ€œThanks, Bella,โ€ he said. โ€œI love you, kid.โ€

โ€œI love you, too, Dad.โ€ I touched his shoulder, and then shoved away from the table. โ€œIf you need anything, Iโ€™ll be at Billyโ€™s.โ€

I didnโ€™t look back as I ran out. This was just perfect, just what I needed right now. I grumbled to myself all the way to La Push.

Carlisleโ€™s black Mercedes was not in front of Billyโ€™s house. That was both good and bad. Obviously, I needed to talk to Jacob alone. Yet I still wished I could somehow hold Edwardโ€™s hand, like I had before, when Jacob was unconscious. Impossible. But I missed Edward โ€” it had seemed like a very long afternoon alone with Alice. I supposed that made my answer quite obvious. I already knew that I couldnโ€™t live without Edward. That fact wasnโ€™t going to make this any less painful.

I tapped quietly on the front door.

โ€œCome in, Bella,โ€ Billy said. The roar of my truck was easy to recognize.

I let myself in.

โ€œHey, Billy. Is he awake?โ€ I asked.

โ€œHe woke up about a half hour ago, just before the doctor left. Go on in. I think heโ€™s been waiting for you.โ€

I flinched, and then took a deep breath. โ€œThanks.โ€

I hesitated at the door to Jacobโ€™s room, not sure whether to knock. I decided to peek first, hoping โ€” coward that I was โ€” that maybe heโ€™d gone back to sleep. I felt like I could use just a few more minutes.

I opened the door a crack and leaned hesitantly in.

Jacob was waiting for me, his face calm and smooth. The haggard, gaunt look was gone, but only a careful blankness took its place. There was no animation in his dark eyes.

It was hard to look at his face, knowing that I loved him. It made more of a difference than I would have thought. I wondered if it had always been this hard for him, all this time.

Thankfully, someone had covered him with a quilt. It was a relief not to have to see the extent of the damage.

I stepped in and shut the door quietly behind me. โ€œHi, Jake,โ€ I murmured.

He didnโ€™t answer at first. He looked at my face for a long moment. Then, with some effort, he rearranged his expression into a slightly mocking smile.

โ€œYeah, I sort of thought it might be like that.โ€ He sighed. โ€œToday has definitely taken a turn for the worse. First I pick the wrong place, miss the best fight, and Seth gets all the glory. Then Leah has to be an idiot trying to prove sheโ€™s as tough as the rest of us and I have to be the idiot who saves her. And now this.โ€ He waved his left hand toward me where I hesitated by the door.

โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€ I mumbled. What a stupid question.

โ€œA little stoned. Dr. Fang isnโ€™t sure how much pain medication I need, so heโ€™s going with trial and error. Think he overdid it.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re not in pain.โ€

โ€œNo. At least, I canโ€™t feel my injuries,โ€ he said, smiling mockingly again.

I bit my lip. I was never going to get through this. Why didnโ€™t anyone ever try to kill me when Iย wantedย to die?

The wry humor left his face, and his eyes warmed up. His forehead creased, like he was worried.

โ€œHow about you?โ€ he asked, sounding really concerned. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ I stared at him. Maybe heย hadย taken too many drugs.ย โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œWell, I mean, I was pretty sure that he wouldnโ€™t actuallyย hurtย you, but I wasnโ€™t sure how bad it was going to be. Iโ€™ve been going a little crazy with worrying about you ever since I woke up. I didnโ€™t know if you were going to be allowed to visit or anything. The suspense was terrible. How did it go? Was he mean to you? Iโ€™m sorry if it was bad. I didnโ€™t mean for you to have to go through that alone. I was thinking Iโ€™d be there. โ€

It took me a minute to even understand. He babbled on, looking more and more awkward, until I got what he was saying. Then I hurried to reassure him.

โ€œNo, no, Jake! Iโ€™m fine. Too fine, really. Of course he wasnโ€™t mean. I wish!โ€

His eyes widened in what looked like horror.ย โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t even mad at me โ€” he wasnโ€™t even mad atย you! Heโ€™s so unselfish it makes me feel even worse. I wish he would have yelled at me or something. Itโ€™s not like I donโ€™t deserve . . . well, much worse that getting yelled at. But he doesnโ€™t care. He just wants me to beย happy.โ€

โ€œHe wasnโ€™t mad?โ€ Jacob asked, incredulous. โ€œNo. He was much too kind.โ€

Jacob stared for another minute, and then he suddenly frowned. โ€œWell,

damn!โ€ he growled.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Jake? Does it hurt?โ€ My hands fluttered uselessly as I looked around for his medication.

โ€œNo,โ€ he grumbled in a disgusted tone. โ€œI canโ€™t believe this! He didnโ€™t give you an ultimatum or anything?โ€

โ€œNot even close โ€” whatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€

He scowled and shook his head. โ€œI was sort of counting on his reaction. Damn it all. Heโ€™s better than I thought.โ€

The way he said it, though angrier, reminded me of Edwardโ€™s tribute to Jacobโ€™s lack of ethics in the tent this morning. Which meant that Jake was still hoping, still fighting. I winced as that stabbed deep.

โ€œHeโ€™s not playing any game, Jake,โ€ I said quietly.

โ€œYou bet he is. Heโ€™s playing every bit as hard as I am, only he knows what heโ€™s doing and I donโ€™t. Donโ€™t blame me because heโ€™s a better manipulator than I am โ€” I havenโ€™t been around long enough to learn all his tricks.โ€

โ€œHe isnโ€™t manipulating me!โ€

โ€œYes, he is! When are you going to wake up and realize that heโ€™s not a perfect as you think he is?โ€

โ€œAt least he didnโ€™t threaten to kill himself to make me kiss him,โ€ I snapped. As soon as the words were out, I flushed with chagrin. โ€œWait. Pretend that didnโ€™t slip out. I swore to myself that I wasnโ€™t going to say anything about that.โ€

He took a deep breath. When he spoke, he was calmer. โ€œWhy not?โ€ โ€œBecause I didnโ€™t come here to blame you for anything.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true, though,โ€ he said evenly. โ€œI did do that.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t care, Jake. Iโ€™m not mad.โ€

He smiled. โ€œI donโ€™t care, either. I knew youโ€™d forgive me, and Iโ€™m glad I did it. Iโ€™d do it again. At least I have that much. At least I made you see that youย doย love me. Thatโ€™s worth something.โ€

โ€œIs it? Is it really better than if I was still in the dark?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you think you ought to know how you feel โ€” just so that it doesnโ€™t take you by surprise someday when itโ€™s too late and youโ€™re a married vampire?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo โ€” I didnโ€™t mean better for me. I meant better forย you.ย Does it make things better or worse for you, having me know that Iโ€™m in love with you? When it doesnโ€™t make a difference either way. Would it have been better, easier for you, if I never clued in?โ€

He took my question as seriously as Iโ€™d meant it, thinking carefully before he answered. โ€œYes, itโ€™s better to have you know,โ€ he finally decided. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t figured it out . . . Iโ€™d have always wondered if your decision would have been different if you had. Now I know. I did everything I could.โ€ He dragged in an unsteady breath, and closed his eyes.

This time I did not โ€” could not โ€” resist the urge to comfort him. I crossed the small room and kneeled by his head, afraid to sit on the bed in case I jostled it and hurt him, and leaned in to touch my forehead to his cheek.

Jacob sighed, and put his hand on my hair, holding me there. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Jake.โ€

โ€œI always knew this was a long shot. Itโ€™s not your fault, Bella.โ€ โ€œNot you, too,โ€ I moaned. โ€œPlease.โ€

He pulled away to look at me. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItย isย my fault. And Iโ€™m so sick of being told itโ€™s not.โ€

He grinned. It didnโ€™t touch his eyes. โ€œYou want me to haul you over the coals?โ€

โ€œActually . . . I think I do.โ€

He pursed his lips as he measured how much I meant it. A smile flashed across his face briefly, and then he twisted his expression into a fierce scowl.

โ€œKissing me back like that was inexcusable.โ€ He spit the words at me. โ€œIf you knew you were just going to take it back, maybe you shouldnโ€™t have been quite so convincing about it.โ€

I winced and nodded. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry.โ€

โ€œSorry doesnโ€™t make anything better, Bella. What were you thinking?โ€ โ€œI wasnโ€™t,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œYou should have told me to go die. Thatโ€™s what you want.โ€

โ€œNo, Jacob,โ€ I whimpered, fighting against the budding tears. โ€œNo!

Never.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not crying?โ€ he demanded, his voice suddenly back to its normal tone. He twitched impatiently on the bed.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I muttered, laughing weakly at myself through the tears that were suddenly sobs.

He shifted his weight, throwing his good leg off the bed as if he were going to try to stand.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ I demanded through the tears. โ€œLie down, you idiot, youโ€™ll hurt yourself!โ€ I jumped to my feet and pushed his good shoulder down with two hands.

He surrendered, leaning back with a gasp of pain, but he grabbed me around my waist and pulled me down on the bed, against his good side. I curled up there, trying to stifle the silly sobs against his hot skin.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re crying,โ€ he mumbled. โ€œYou know I just said those things because you wanted me to. I didnโ€™t mean them.โ€ His hand rubbed against my shoulders.

โ€œI know.โ€ I took a deep, ragged breath, trying to control myself. How did I end up being the one crying while he did the comforting? โ€œItโ€™s all still true, though. Thanks for saying it out loud.โ€

โ€œDo I get points for making you cry?โ€

โ€œSure, Jake.โ€ I tried to smile. โ€œAs many as you want.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Bella, honey. Itโ€™s all going to work out.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t see how,โ€ I muttered.

He patted the top of my head. โ€œIโ€™m going to give in and be good.โ€

โ€œMore games?โ€ I wondered, tilting my chin so that I could see his face. โ€œMaybe.โ€ He laughed with a bit of effort, and then winced. โ€œBut Iโ€™m

going to try.โ€

I frowned.

โ€œDonโ€™t be so pessimistic,โ€ he complained. โ€œGive me a little credit.โ€ โ€œWhat do you mean by โ€˜be goodโ€™?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be your friend, Bella,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œI wonโ€™t ask for more than that.โ€

โ€œI think itโ€™s too late for that, Jake. How can we be friends, when we love each other like this?โ€

He looked at the ceiling, his stare intent, as if he were reading something that was written there. โ€œMaybe . . . it will have to be a long- distance friendship.โ€

I clenched my teeth together, glad he wasnโ€™t looking at my face, fighting against the sobs that threatened to overtake me again. I needed to be strong, and I had no idea how. . . .

โ€œYou know that story in the Bible?โ€ Jacob asked suddenly, still reading the blank ceiling. โ€œThe one with the king and the two women fighting over the baby?โ€

โ€œSure. King Solomon.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. King Solomon,โ€ he repeated. โ€œAnd he said, cut the kid in half . . . but it was only a test. Just to see who would give up their share to protect it.โ€

โ€œYeah, I remember.โ€

He looked back at my face. โ€œIโ€™m not going to cut you in half anymore, Bella.โ€

I understood what he was saying. He was telling me that he loved me the most, that his surrender proved it. I wanted to defend Edward, to tell Jacob how Edward would do the same thing if I wanted, if I wouldย letย him. I was the one who wouldnโ€™t renounce my claim there. But there was no point in starting an argument that would only hurt him more.

I closed my eyes, willing myself to control the pain. I couldnโ€™t impose that on him.

We were quiet for a moment. He seemed to be waiting for me to say something; I was trying to think of something to say.

โ€œCan I tell you what the worst part is?โ€ he asked hesitantly when I said nothing. โ€œDo you mind? Iย amย going to be good.โ€

โ€œWill it help?โ€ I whispered. โ€œIt might. It couldnโ€™t hurt.โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s the worst part, then?โ€

โ€œThe worse part is knowing what would have been.โ€ โ€œWhatย mightย have been.โ€ I sighed.

โ€œNo.โ€ Jacob shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m exactly right for you, Bella. It would have been effortless for us โ€” comfortable, easy as breathing. I was the natural path your life would have taken. . . .โ€ He stared into space for a moment, and I waited. โ€œIf the world was the way it was supposed to be, if there were no monsters and no magic . . .โ€

I could see what he saw, and I knew that he was right. If the world was the sane place it was supposed to be, Jacob and I would have been together. And we would have been happy. He was my soul mate in that world โ€” would have been my soul mate still if his claim had not been overshadowed by something stronger, something so strong that it could not exist in a rational world.

Was it out there for Jacob, too? Something that would trump a soul mate? I had to believe that it was.

Two futures, two soul mates . . . too much for any one person. And so unfair that I wouldnโ€™t be the only one to pay for it. Jacobโ€™s pain seemed too high a price. Cringing at the thought of that price, I wondered if I would have wavered, if I hadnโ€™t lost Edward once. If I didnโ€™t know what it was like to live without him. I wasnโ€™t sure. That knowledge was so deep a part of me, I couldnโ€™t imagine how I would feel without it.

โ€œHeโ€™s like a drug for you, Bella.โ€ His voice was still gentle, not at all critical. โ€œI see that you canโ€™t live without him now. Itโ€™s too late. But I would have been healthier for you. Not a drug; I would have been the air, the sun.โ€ The corner of my mouth turned up in a wistful half-smile. โ€œI used to think of you that way, you know. Like the sun. My personal sun. You

balanced out the clouds nicely for me.โ€

He sighed. โ€œThe clouds I can handle. But I canโ€™t fight with an eclipse.โ€

I touched his face, laying my hand against his cheek. He exhaled at my touch and closed his eyes. It was very quiet. For a minute I could hear the beating of his heart, slow and even.

โ€œTell me the worst part for you,โ€ he whispered. โ€œI think that might be a bad idea.โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œI think it will hurt.โ€ โ€œPlease.โ€

How could I deny him anything at this point?

โ€œThe worst part . . .โ€ I hesitated, and then let words spill out in a flood of truth. โ€œThe worst part is that I saw the whole thing โ€” our whole life. And I want it bad, Jake, I want it all. I want to stay right here and never move. I want to love you and make you happy. And I canโ€™t, and itโ€™s killing me. Itโ€™s like Sam and Emily, Jake โ€” I never had a choice. I always knew nothing would change. Maybe thatโ€™s why I was fighting against you so hard.โ€

He seemed to be concentrating on breathing evenly. โ€œI knew I shouldnโ€™t have told you that.โ€

He shook his head slowly. โ€œNo. Iโ€™m glad you did. Thank you.โ€ He kissed the top of my head, and then he sighed. โ€œIโ€™ll be good now.โ€

I looked up, and he was smiling.

โ€œSo youโ€™re going to get married, huh?โ€ โ€œWe donโ€™t have to talk about that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like to know some of the details. I donโ€™t know when Iโ€™ll talk to you again.โ€

I had to wait for a minute before I could speak. When I was pretty sure that my voice wouldnโ€™t break, I answered his question.

โ€œItโ€™s not really my idea . . . but, yes. It means a lot to him. I figure, why not?โ€

Jake nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s true. Itโ€™s not such a big thing โ€” in comparison.โ€

His voice was very calm, very practical. I stared at him, curious about how he was managing, and that ruined it. He met my eyes for a second, and then twisted his head away. I waited to speak until his breathing was under control.

โ€œYes. In comparison,โ€ I agreed. โ€œHow long do you have left?โ€

โ€œThat depends on how long it takes Alice to pull a wedding together.โ€ I suppressed a groan, imagining what Alice would do.

โ€œBefore or after?โ€ he asked quietly. I knew what he meant. โ€œAfter.โ€

He nodded. This was a relief to him. I wondered how many sleepless nights the thought of my graduation had given him.

โ€œAre you scared?โ€ he whispered. โ€œYes,โ€ I whispered back.

โ€œWhat are you afraid of?โ€ I could barely hear his voice now. He stared down at my hands.

โ€œLots of things.โ€ I worked to make my voice lighter, but I stayed honest. โ€œIโ€™ve never been much of a masochist, so Iโ€™m not looking forward to the pain. And I wish there was some way to keepย himย away โ€” I donโ€™t want him to suffer with me, but I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any way around it. Thereโ€™s dealing with Charlie, too, and Renรฉe. . . . And then afterward, I hope Iโ€™ll be able to control myselfย soon.ย Maybe Iโ€™ll be such a menace that the pack will have to take me out.โ€

He looked up with a disapproving expression. โ€œIโ€™d hamstring any one of my brothers who tried.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€

He smiled halfheartedly. Then he frowned. โ€œBut isnโ€™t it more dangerous than that? In all of the stories, they say itโ€™s too hard . . . they lose control . . . people die. โ€ He gulped.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not afraid of that. Silly Jacob โ€” donโ€™t you know better than to believe vampire stories?โ€

He obviously didnโ€™t appreciate my attempt at humor.

โ€œWell, anyway, lots to worry about. But worth it, in the end.โ€

He nodded unwillingly, and I knew that he in no way agreed with me.

I stretched my neck up to whisper in his ear, laying my cheek against his warm skin. โ€œYou know I love you.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ he breathed, his arm tightening automatically around my waist. โ€œYou know how much I wish it was enough.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll always be waiting in the wings, Bella,โ€ he promised, lightening his tone and loosening his arm. I pulled away with a dull, dragging sense of

loss, feeling the tearing separation as I left a part of me behind, there on the bed next to him. โ€œYouโ€™ll always have that spare option if you want it.โ€

I made an effort to smile. โ€œUntil my heart stops beating.โ€

He grinned back. โ€œYou know, I think maybe Iโ€™d still take you โ€” maybe. I guess that depends on how much you stink.โ€

โ€œShould I come back to see you? Or would you rather I didnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll think it through and get back to you,โ€ he said. โ€œI might need the company to keep from going crazy. The vampire surgeon extraordinaire says I canโ€™t phase until he gives the okay โ€” it might mess up the way the bones are set.โ€ Jacob made a face.

โ€œBe good and do what Carlisle tells you to do. Youโ€™ll get well faster.โ€ โ€œSure, sure.โ€

โ€œI wonder when it will happen,โ€ I said. โ€œWhen the right girl is going to catch your eye.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get your hopes up, Bella.โ€ Jacobโ€™s voice was abruptly sour. โ€œThough Iโ€™m sure it would be a relief for you.โ€

โ€œMaybe, maybe not. I probably wonโ€™t think sheโ€™s good enough for you.

I wonder how jealous Iโ€™ll be.โ€

โ€œThat part might be kind of fun,โ€ he admitted.

โ€œLet me know if you want me to come back, and Iโ€™ll be here,โ€ I promised.

With a sigh, he turned his cheek toward me.

I leaned in and kissed his face softly. โ€œLove you, Jacob.โ€ He laughed lightly. โ€œLove you more.โ€

He watched me walk out of his room with an unfathomable expression in his black eyes.
