Chapter no 9 – TARGETโ€Œ

Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)

ALICE DROPPED ME OFF IN THE MORNING, IN KEEPINGย with the slumber party charade. It wouldnโ€™t be long until Edward showed up, officially returning from his โ€œhikingโ€ trip. All of the pretenses were starting to wear on me. I wouldnโ€™t miss this part of being human.

Charlie peeked through the front window when he heard me slam the car door. He waved to Alice, and then went to get the door for me.

โ€œDid you have fun?โ€ Charlie asked. โ€œSure, it was great. Very . . . girlie.โ€

I carried my stuff in, dumped it all at the foot of the stairs, and wandered into the kitchen to look for a snack.

โ€œYouโ€™ve got a message,โ€ Charlie called after me.

On the kitchen counter, the phone message pad was propped up conspicuously against a saucepan.

Jacob called,ย Charlie had written.

He said he didnโ€™t mean it, and that heโ€™s sorry. He wants you to call him. Be nice and give him a break. He sounded upset.

I grimaced. Charlie didnโ€™t usually editorialize on my messages.

Jacob could just go ahead and be upset. I didnโ€™t want to talk to him. Last Iโ€™d heard, they werenโ€™t big on allowing phone calls from the other side. If Jacob preferred me dead, then maybe he should get used to the silence.

My appetite evaporated. I turned an about face and went to put my things away.

โ€œArenโ€™t you going to call Jacob?โ€ Charlie asked. He was leaning around the living room wall, watching me pick up.

โ€œNo.โ€

I started up the stairs.

โ€œThatโ€™s not very attractive behavior, Bella,โ€ he said. โ€œForgiveness is divine.โ€

โ€œMind your own business,โ€ I muttered under my breath, much too low for him to hear.

I knew the laundry was building up, so after I put my toothpaste away and threw my dirty clothes in the hamper, I went to strip Charlieโ€™s bed. I left his sheets in a pile at the top of the stairs and went to get mine.

I paused beside the bed, cocking my head to the side.

Where was my pillow? I turned in a circle, scanning the room. No pillow. I noticed that my room looked oddly tidy. Hadnโ€™t my gray sweatshirt been draped over the low bedpost on the footboard? And I would swear there had been a pair of dirty socks behind the rocking chair, along with the red blouse Iโ€™d tried on two mornings ago, but decided was too dressy for school, hanging over the arm. . . . I spun around again. My hamper wasnโ€™t empty, but it wasnโ€™t overflowing, the way I thought it had been.

Was Charlie doing laundry? That was out of character. โ€œDad, did you start the wash?โ€ I shouted out my door.

โ€œUm, no,โ€ he shouted back, sounding guilty. โ€œDid you want me to?โ€ โ€œNo, I got it. Were you looking for something in my room?โ€

โ€œNo. Why?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t find . . . a shirt. โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t been in there.โ€

And then I remembered that Alice had been here to get my pajamas. I hadnโ€™t noticed that sheโ€™d borrowed my pillow, too โ€” probably since Iโ€™d avoided the bed. It looked like she had cleaned while she was passing through. I blushed for my slovenly ways.

But that red shirt really wasnโ€™t dirty, so I went to save it from the hamper.

I expected to find it near the top, but it wasnโ€™t there. I dug through the whole pile and still couldnโ€™t find it. I knew I was probably getting paranoid, but it seemed like something else was missing, or maybe more than one something. I didnโ€™t even have half a load here.

I ripped my sheets off and headed for the laundry closet, grabbing Charlieโ€™s on the way. The washing machine was empty. I checked the dryer,

too, half-expecting to find a washed load waiting for me, courtesy of Alice. Nothing. I frowned, mystified.

โ€œDid you find what you were looking for?โ€ Charlie yelled. โ€œNot yet.โ€

I went back upstairs to search under my bed. Nothing but dust bunnies. I started to dig through my dresser. Maybe Iโ€™d put the red shirt away and forgotten.

I gave up when the doorbell rang. That would be Edward.

โ€œDoor,โ€ Charlie informed me from the couch as I skipped past him. โ€œDonโ€™t strain yourself, Dad.โ€

I pulled the door open with a big smile on my face.

Edwardโ€™s golden eyes were wide, his nostrils flared, his lips pulled back over his teeth.

โ€œEdward?โ€ My voice was sharp with shock as I read his expression. โ€œWhat โ€”?โ€

He put his finger to my lips. โ€œGive me two seconds,โ€ he whispered. โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

I stood frozen on the doorstep and he . . . disappeared. He moved so quickly that Charlie wouldnโ€™t even have seen him pass.

Before I could compose myself enough to count to two, he was back. He put his arm around my waist and pulled me swiftly toward the kitchen. His eyes darted around the room, and he held me against his body as if he were shielding me from something. I threw a glance toward Charlie on the couch, but he was studiously ignoring us.

โ€œSomeoneโ€™s been here,โ€ he murmured in my ear after he pulled me to the back of the kitchen. His voice was strained; it was difficult to hear him over the thumping of the washing machine.

โ€œI swear that no werewolves โ€”โ€ I started to say.

โ€œNot one of them,โ€ he interrupted me quickly, shaking his head. โ€œOne of us.โ€

His tone made it clear that he didnโ€™t mean a member of his family. I felt the blood empty from my face.

โ€œVictoria?โ€ I choked.

โ€œItโ€™s not a scent I recognize.โ€

โ€œOne of the Volturi,โ€ I guessed. โ€œProbably.โ€

โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why I think it must have been them โ€” it wasnโ€™t long ago, early this morning while Charlie was sleeping. And whoever it was didnโ€™t touch him, so there must have been another purpose.โ€

โ€œLooking for me.โ€

He didnโ€™t answer. His body was frozen, a statue.

โ€œWhat are you two hissing about in here?โ€ Charlie asked suspiciously, rounding the corner with an empty popcorn bowl in his hands.

I felt green. A vampire had been in the house looking for me while Charlie slept. Panic overwhelmed me, closed my throat. I couldnโ€™t answer, I just stared at him in horror.

Charlieโ€™s expression changed. Abruptly, he was grinning. โ€œIf you two are having a fight . . . well, donโ€™t let me interrupt.โ€

Still grinning, he put his bowl in the sink and sauntered out of the room.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ Edward said in a low hard voice.

โ€œBut Charlie!โ€ The fear was squeezing my chest, making it hard to breathe.

He deliberated for a short second, and then his phone was in his hand. โ€œEmmett,โ€ he muttered into the receiver. He began talking so fast that I

couldnโ€™t understand the words. It was over in half a minute. He started pulling me toward the door.

โ€œEmmett and Jasper are on their way,โ€ he whispered when he felt my resistance. โ€œTheyโ€™ll sweep the woods. Charlie is fine.โ€

I let him drag me along then, too panicked to think clearly. Charlie met my frightened eyes with a smug grin, which suddenly turned to confusion. Edward had me out the door before Charlie could say anything.

โ€œWhere are we going?โ€ I couldnโ€™t stop whispering, even after we were in the car.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to talk to Alice,โ€ he told me, his volume normal but his voice bleak.

โ€œYou think maybe she saw something?โ€

He stared at the road through narrowed eyes. โ€œMaybe.โ€

They were waiting for us, on alert after Edwardโ€™s call. It was like walking into a museum, everyone still as statues in various poses of stress.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Edward demanded as soon as we were through the door. I was shocked to see that he was glowering at Alice, his hands fisted in anger.

Alice stood with her arms folded tight across her chest. Only her lips moved. โ€œI have no idea. I didnโ€™t see anything.โ€

โ€œHow is thatย possible?โ€ he hissed.

โ€œEdward,โ€ I said, a quiet reproof. I didnโ€™t like him talking to Alice this

way.

Carlisle interrupted in a calming voice. โ€œItโ€™s not an exact science,

Edward.โ€

โ€œHe was in herย room,ย Alice. He could have still been there โ€” waiting for her.โ€

โ€œI would have seen that.โ€

Edward threw his hands up in exasperation. โ€œReally? Youโ€™re sure?โ€

Aliceโ€™s voice was cold when she answered. โ€œYouโ€™ve already got me watching the Volturisโ€™ decisions, watching for Victoriaโ€™s return, watching Bellaโ€™s every step. You want to add another? Do I just have to watch Charlie, or Bellaโ€™s room, or the house, or the whole street, too? Edward, if I try to do too much, things are going to start slipping through the cracks.โ€

โ€œIt looks like they already are,โ€ Edward snapped.

โ€œShe was never in any danger. There was nothing to see.โ€ โ€œIf youโ€™re watching Italy, why didnโ€™t you see them send โ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s them,โ€ Alice insisted. โ€œI would have seen that.โ€ โ€œWho else would leave Charlie alive?โ€

I shuddered.

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ Alice said. โ€œHelpful.โ€

โ€œStop it, Edward,โ€ I whispered.

He turned on me, his face still livid, his teeth clenched together. He glared at me for half a second, and then, suddenly, he exhaled. His eyes widened and his jaw relaxed.

โ€œYouโ€™re right, Bella. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ He looked at Alice. โ€œForgive me, Alice. I shouldnโ€™t be taking this out on you. That was inexcusable.โ€

โ€œI understand,โ€ Alice assured him. โ€œIโ€™m not happy about it, either.โ€

Edward took a deep breath. โ€œOkay, letโ€™s look at this logically. What are the possibilities?โ€

Everyone seemed to thaw out at once. Alice relaxed and leaned against the back of the couch. Carlisle walked slowly toward her, his eyes far away. Esme sat on the sofa in front of Alice, curling her legs up on the seat. Only Rosalie remained unmoving, her back to us, staring out the glass wall.

Edward pulled me to the sofa and I sat next to Esme, who shifted to put her arm around me. He held one of my hands tightly in both of his.

โ€œVictoria?โ€ Carlisle asked.

Edward shook his head. โ€œNo. I didnโ€™t know the scent. He might have been from the Volturi, someone Iโ€™ve never met. โ€

Alice shook her head. โ€œAro hasnโ€™t asked anyone to look for her yet. I

willย see that. Iโ€™m waiting for it.โ€

Edwardโ€™s head snapped up. โ€œYouโ€™re watching for an official command.โ€

โ€œYou think someoneโ€™s acting on their own? Why?โ€

โ€œCaiusโ€™s idea,โ€ Edward suggested, his face tightening again.

โ€œOr Janeโ€™s . . . ,โ€ Alice said. โ€œThey both have the resources to send an unfamiliar face. โ€

Edward scowled. โ€œAnd the motivation.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t make sense, though,โ€ Esme said. โ€œIf whoever it was meant to wait for Bella, Alice would have seen that. He โ€” or she โ€” had no intention of hurting Bella. Or Charlie, for that matter.โ€

I cringed at my fatherโ€™s name.

โ€œItโ€™s going to be fine, Bella,โ€ Esme murmured, smoothing my hair. โ€œBut what was the point then?โ€ Carlisle mused.

โ€œChecking to see if Iโ€™m still human?โ€ I guessed. โ€œPossible,โ€ Carlisle said.

Rosalie breathed out a sigh, loud enough for me to hear. Sheโ€™d unfrozen, and her face was turned expectantly toward the kitchen. Edward, on the other hand, looked discouraged.

Emmett burst through the kitchen door, Jasper right behind him.

โ€œLong gone, hours ago,โ€ Emmett announced, disappointed. โ€œThe trail went East, then South, and disappeared on a side road. Had a car waiting.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s bad luck,โ€ Edward muttered. โ€œIf heโ€™d gone west . . . well, it would be nice for those dogs to make themselves useful.โ€

I winced, and Esme rubbed my shoulder.

Jasper looked at Carlisle. โ€œNeither of us recognized him. But here.โ€ He held out something green and crumpled. Carlisle took it from him and held it to his face. I saw, as it exchanged hands, that it was a broken fern frond. โ€œMaybe you know the scent.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Carlisle said. โ€œNot familiar. No one Iโ€™ve ever met.โ€

โ€œPerhaps weโ€™re looking at this the wrong way. Maybe itโ€™s a coincidence . . . ,โ€ Esme began, but stopped when she saw everyone elseโ€™s incredulous expressions. โ€œI donโ€™t mean a coincidence that a stranger happened to pick Bellaโ€™s house to visit at random. I meant that maybe someone was just curious. Our scent is all around her. Was he wondering what draws us there?โ€

โ€œWhy wouldnโ€™t he just come here then? If he was curious?โ€ Emmett demanded.

โ€œYou would,โ€ Esme said with a sudden, fond smile. โ€œThe rest of us arenโ€™t always so direct. Our family is very large โ€” he or she might be frightened. But Charlie wasnโ€™t harmed. This doesnโ€™t have to be an enemy.โ€

Just curious. Like James and Victoria had been curious, in the beginning? The thought of Victoria made me tremble, though the one thing they seemed certain of was that it had not been her. Not this time. She would stick to her obsessed pattern. This was just someone else, a stranger.

I was slowly realizing that vampires were much bigger participants in this world than Iโ€™d once thought. How many times did the average human cross paths with them, completely unaware? How many deaths, obliviously reported as crimes and accidents, were really due to their thirst? How crowded would this new world be when I finally joined it?

The shrouded future sent a shiver down my spine.

The Cullens pondered Esmeโ€™s words with varying expressions. I could see that Edward did not accept her theory, and that Carlisle very much wanted to.

Alice pursed her lips. โ€œI donโ€™t think so. The timing of it was too perfect. . . . This visitor was so careful to make no contact. Almost like he or she knew that I would see. โ€

โ€œHe could have other reasons for not making contact,โ€ Esme reminded

her.

โ€œDoes it really matter who it was?โ€ I asked. โ€œJust the chance that

someoneย wasย looking for me . . . isnโ€™t that reason enough? We shouldnโ€™t

wait for graduation.โ€

โ€œNo, Bella,โ€ Edward said quickly. โ€œItโ€™s not that bad. If youโ€™re really in danger, weโ€™ll know.โ€

โ€œThink of Charlie,โ€ Carlisle reminded me. โ€œThink of how it would hurt him if you disappeared.โ€

โ€œIย amย thinking of Charlie! Heโ€™s the one Iโ€™m worried about! What if my little guest had happened to be thirsty last night? As long as Iโ€™m around Charlie, heโ€™s a target, too. If anything happened to him, it would be all my fault!โ€

โ€œHardly, Bella,โ€ Esme said, patting my hair again. โ€œAnd nothing will happen to Charlie. Weโ€™re just going to have to be more careful.โ€

โ€œMoreย careful?โ€ I repeated in disbelief.

โ€œItโ€™s all going to be fine, Bella,โ€ Alice promised; Edward squeezed my hand.

And I could see, looking at all of their beautiful faces one by one, that nothing I could say was going to change their minds.

It was a quiet ride home. I was frustrated. Against my better judgment, I was still human.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t be alone for a second,โ€ Edward promised as he drove me to Charlieโ€™s. โ€œSomeone will always be there. Emmett, Alice, Jasper . . .โ€

I sighed. โ€œThis is ridiculous. Theyโ€™ll get so bored, theyโ€™ll have to kill me themselves, just for something to do.โ€

Edward gave me a sour look. โ€œHilarious, Bella.โ€

Charlie was in a good mood when we got back. He could see the tension between me and Edward, and he was misinterpreting it. He watched me throw together his dinner with a smug smile on his face. Edward had excused himself for a moment, to do some surveillance, I assumed, but Charlie waited till he was back to pass on my messages.

โ€œJacob called again,โ€ Charlie said as soon as Edward was in the room.

I kept my face empty as I set the plate in front of him. โ€œIs that a fact?โ€

Charlie frowned. โ€œDonโ€™t be petty, Bella. He sounded really low.โ€ โ€œIs Jacob paying you for all the P.R., or are you a volunteer?โ€

Charlie grumbled incoherently at me until the food cut off his garbled complaint.

Though he didnโ€™t realize it, heโ€™d found his mark.

My life was feeling a lot like a game of dice right now โ€” would the next roll come up snake eyes? What if somethingย didย happen to me? It seemed worse than petty to leave Jacob feeling guilty about what heโ€™d said.

But I didnโ€™t want to talk to him with Charlie around, to have to watch my every word so I didnโ€™t let the wrong thing slip. Thinking about this made me jealous of Jacob and Billyโ€™s relationship. How easy it must be when you had no secrets from the person you lived with.

So I would wait for the morning. I most likely wasnโ€™t going to die tonight, after all, and it wouldnโ€™t hurt him to feel guilty for twelve more hours. It might even be good for him.

When Edward officially left for the evening, I wondered who was out in the downpour, keeping an eye on Charlie and me. I felt awful for Alice or whoever else it might be, but still comforted. I had to admit it was nice, knowing I wasnโ€™t alone. And Edward was back in record time.

He sang me to sleep again and โ€” aware even in unconsciousness that he was there โ€” I slept free of nightmares.

In the morning, Charlie left to go fishing with Deputy Mark before I was up. I decided to use this lack of supervision to be divine.

โ€œIโ€™m going to let Jacob off the hook,โ€ I warned Edward after Iโ€™d eaten breakfast.

โ€œI knew youโ€™d forgive him,โ€ he said with an easy smile. โ€œHolding grudges is not one of your many talents.โ€

I rolled my eyes, but I was pleased. It seemed like Edward really was over the whole anti-werewolf thing.

I didnโ€™t look at the clock until after Iโ€™d dialed. It was a little early for calls, and I worried that I would wake Billy and Jake, but someone picked up before the second ring, so he couldnโ€™t have been too far from the phone.

โ€œHello?โ€ a dull voice said. โ€œJacob?โ€

โ€œBella!โ€ he exclaimed. โ€œOh, Bella, Iโ€™m so sorry!โ€ he tripped over the words as he hurried to get them out. โ€œI swear I didnโ€™t mean it. I was just

being stupid. I was angry โ€” but thatโ€™s no excuse. It was the stupidest thing Iโ€™ve ever said in my life and Iโ€™m sorry. Donโ€™t be mad at me, please? Please. Lifetime of servitude up for grabs โ€” all you have to do is forgive me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not mad. Youโ€™re forgiven.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ he breathed fervently. โ€œI canโ€™t believe I was such a jerk.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t worry about that โ€” Iโ€™m used to it.โ€

He laughed, exuberant with relief. โ€œCome down to see me,โ€ he begged. โ€œI want to make it up to you.โ€

I frowned. โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œAnything you want. Cliff diving,โ€ he suggested, laughing again. โ€œOh,ย thereโ€™sย a brilliant idea.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll keep you safe,โ€ he promised. โ€œNo matter what you want to do.โ€

I glanced at Edward. His face was very calm, but I was sure this was not the time.

โ€œNot right now.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not thrilled with me, is he?โ€ Jacobโ€™s voice was ashamed, rather than bitter, for once.

โ€œThatโ€™s not the problem. Thereโ€™s . . . well, thereโ€™s this other problem thatโ€™s slightly more worrisome than a bratty teenage werewolf. . . .โ€ I tried to keep my tone joking, but I didnโ€™t fool him.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he demanded.

โ€œUm.โ€ I wasnโ€™t sure what I should tell him.

Edward held his hand out for the phone. I looked at his face carefully.

Heย seemedย calm enough.

โ€œBella?โ€ Jacob asked.

Edward sighed, holding his hand closer.

โ€œDo you mind speaking to Edward?โ€ I asked apprehensively. โ€œHe wants to talk to you.โ€

There was a long pause.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Jacob finally agreed. โ€œThis should be interesting.โ€

I handed the phone to Edward; I hoped he could read the warning in my eyes.

โ€œHello, Jacob,โ€ Edward said, perfectly polite.

There was a silence. I bit my lip, trying to guess how Jacob would answer.

โ€œSomeone was here โ€” not a scent I know,โ€ Edward explained. โ€œHas your pack come across anything new?โ€

Another pause, while Edward nodded to himself, unsurprised.

โ€œHereโ€™s the crux, Jacob. I wonโ€™t be letting Bella out of my sight till I get this taken care of. Itโ€™s nothing personal โ€”โ€

Jacob interrupted him then, and I could hear the buzz of his voice from the receiver. Whatever he was saying, he was more intense than before. I tried unsuccessfully to make out the words.

โ€œYou might be right โ€”,โ€ Edward began, but Jacob was arguing again.

Neither of them sounded angry, at least.

โ€œThatโ€™s an interesting suggestion. Weโ€™re quite willing to renegotiate. If Sam is amenable.โ€

Jacobโ€™s voice was quieter now. I started chewing on my thumbnail as I tried to read Edwardโ€™s expression.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Edward replied.

Then Jacob said something that caused a surprised expression to flicker across Edwardโ€™s face.

โ€œIโ€™d planned to go alone, actually,โ€ Edward said, answering the unexpected question. โ€œAnd leave her with the others.โ€

Jacobโ€™s voice rose in pitch, and it sounded to me like he was trying to be persuasive.

โ€œIโ€™ll try to consider it objectively,โ€ Edward promised. โ€œAs objectively as Iโ€™m capable of.โ€

The pause was shorter this time.

โ€œThatโ€™s not a half-bad idea. When? . . . No, thatโ€™s fine. Iโ€™d like a chance to follow the trail personally, anyway. Ten minutes . . . Certainly,โ€ Edward said. He held the phone out to me. โ€œBella?โ€

I took it slowly, feeling confused.

โ€œWhat was that all about?โ€ I asked Jacob, my voice peeved. I knew it was juvenile, but I felt excluded.

โ€œA truce, I think. Hey, do me a favor,โ€ Jacob suggested. โ€œTry to convince your bloodsucker that the safest place for you to be โ€” especially when he leaves โ€” is on the reservation. Weโ€™re well able to handle anything.โ€

โ€œIs that what you were trying to sell him?โ€

โ€œYes. It makes sense. Charlieโ€™s probably better off here, too. As much as possible.โ€

โ€œGet Billy on it,โ€ I agreed. I hated that I was putting Charlie within the range of the crosshairs that always seemed to be centered on me. โ€œWhat else?โ€

โ€œJust rearranging some boundaries, so we can catch anyone who gets too near Forks. Iโ€™m not sure if Sam will go for it, but until he comes around, Iโ€™ll keep an eye on things.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean by โ€˜keep an eye on thingsโ€™?โ€

โ€œI mean that if you see a wolf running around your house, donโ€™t shoot at it.โ€

โ€œOf course not. You really shouldnโ€™t do anything . . . risky, though.โ€ He snorted. โ€œDonโ€™t be stupid. I can take care of myself.โ€

I sighed.

โ€œI also tried to convince him to let you visit. Heโ€™s prejudiced, so donโ€™t let him give you any crap about safety. He knows as well as I do that youโ€™d be safe here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll keep that in mind.โ€

โ€œSee you in a few,โ€ Jacob said. โ€œYouโ€™re coming up?โ€

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™m going to get the scent of your visitor so we can track him if he comes back.โ€

โ€œJake, I really donโ€™t like the idea of you tracking โ€”โ€

โ€œOhย please,ย Bella,โ€ he interrupted. Jacob laughed, and then hung up.
