โARE YOU OKAY, JAKE? CHARLIE SAID YOU WERE HAVINGย a hard time. Isnโt
it getting any better?โ
His warm hand curled around mine. โโS not so bad,โ he said, but he wouldnโt meet my eyes.
He walked slowly back to the driftwood bench, staring at the rainbow- colored pebbles, and pulling me along at his side. I sat back down on our tree, but he sat on the wet, rocky ground rather than next to me. I wondered if it was so that he could hide his face more easily. He kept my hand.
I started babbling to fill the silence. โItโs been so long since I was here. Iโve probably missed a ton of things. How are Sam and Emily? And Embry? Did Quil โ?โ
I broke off mid-sentence, remembering that Jacobโs friend Quil had been a sensitive subject.
โAh, Quil,โ Jacob sighed.
So then it must have happened โ Quil must have joined the pack. โIโm sorry,โ I mumbled.
To my surprise, Jacob snorted. โDonโt say that toย him.โ โWhat do you mean?โ
โQuilโs not looking for pity. Just the opposite โ heโs jazzed. Totally thrilled.โ
This made no sense to me. All the other wolves had been so depressed at the idea of their friend sharing their fate. โHuh?โ
Jacob tilted his head back to look at me. He smiled and rolled his eyes. โQuil thinks itโs the coolest thing thatโs ever happened to him. Part of
it is finally knowing whatโs going on. And heโs excited to have his friends
back โ to be part of the โin crowd.โโ Jacob snorted again. โShouldnโt be surprised, I guess. Itโs soย Quil.โ
โHeย likesย it?โ
โHonestly . . . most of them do,โ Jacob admitted slowly. โThere are definitely good sides to this โ the speed, the freedom, the strength . . . the sense of โ ofย family. . . . Sam and I are the only ones who ever felt really bitter. And Sam got past that a long time ago. So Iโm the crybaby now.โ Jacob laughed at himself.
There were so many things I wanted to know. โWhy are you and Sam different? What happened to Sam anyway? Whatโs his problem?โ The questions tumbled out without room to answer them, and Jacob laughed again.
โThatโs a long story.โ
โI told you a long story. Besides, Iโm not in any hurry to get back,โ I said, and then I grimaced as I thought of the trouble I would be in.
He looked up at me swiftly, hearing the double edge in my words. โWill he be mad at you?โ
โYes,โ I admitted. โHe really hates it when I do things he considers . . . risky.โ
โLike hanging out with werewolves.โ โYeah.โ
Jacob shrugged. โSo donโt go back. Iโll sleep on the couch.โ
โThatโs a great idea,โ I grumbled. โBecause then he would come looking for me.โ
Jacob stiffened, and then smiled bleakly. โWould he?โ โIf he was afraid I was hurt or something โ probably.โ โMy ideaโs sounding better all the time.โ
โPlease, Jake. That really bugs me.โ โWhat does?โ
โThat you two are so ready to kill each other!โ I complained. โIt makes me crazy. Why canโt you both just be civilized?โ
โIs he ready to kill me?โ Jacob asked with a grim smile, unconcerned by my anger.
โNot like you seem to be!โ I realized I was yelling. โAt leastย heย can be a grown-up about this. He knows that hurting you would hurt me โ and so he never would. You donโt seem to care about that at all!โ
โYeah, right,โ Jacob muttered. โIโm sure heโs quite the pacifist.โ
โUgh!โ I ripped my hand out of his and shoved his head away. Then I pulled my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms tightly around them.
I glared out toward the horizon, fuming.
Jacob was quiet for a few minutes. Finally, he got up off the ground and sat beside me, putting his arm around my shoulders. I shook it off.
โSorry,โ he said quietly. โIโll try to behave myself.โ I didnโt answer.
โDo you still want to hear about Sam?โ he offered. I shrugged.
โLike I said, itโs a long story. And very . . . strange. Thereโre so many strange things about this new life. I havenโt had time to tell you the half of it. And this thing with Sam โ well, I donโt know if Iโll even be able to explain it right.โ
His words pricked my curiosity in spite of my irritation. โIโm listening,โ I said stiffly.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the side of his face pull up in a smile.
โSam had it so much harder than the rest of us. Because he was the first, and he was alone, and he didnโt have anyone to tell him what was happening. Samโs grandfather died before he was born, and his father has never been around. There was no one there to recognize the signs. The first time it happened โ the first time he phased โ he thought heโd gone insane. It took him two weeks to calm down enough to change back.
โThis was before you came to Forks, so you wouldnโt remember. Samโs mother and Leah Clearwater had the forest rangers searching for him, the police. People thought there had been an accident or something. . .
.โ
โLeah?โ I asked, surprised. Leah was Harryโs daughter. Hearing her name sent an automatic surge of pity through me. Harry Clearwater, Charlieโs life-long friend, had died of a heart attack this past spring.
His voice changed, became heavier. โYeah. Leah and Sam were high school sweethearts. They started dating when she was just a freshman. She was frantic when he disappeared.โ
โBut he and Emily โโ
โIโll get to that โ itโs part of the story,โ he said. He inhaled slowly, and then exhaled in a gust.
I supposed it was silly for me to imagine that Sam had never loved anyone before Emily. Most people fall in and out of love many times in their lives. It was just that Iโd seen Sam with Emily, and I couldnโt imagine him with someone else. The way he looked at her . . . well, it reminded me of a look Iโd seen sometimes in Edwardโs eyes โ when he was looking at me.
โSam came back,โ Jacob said, โbut he wouldnโt talk to anyone about where heโd been. Rumors flew โ that he was up to no good, mostly. And then Sam happened to run in to Quilโs grandfather one afternoon when Old Quil Ateara came to visit Mrs. Uley. Sam shook his hand. Old Quil just about had a stroke.โ Jacob paused to laugh.
โWhy?โ
Jacob put his hand on my cheek and pulled my face around to look at him โ he was leaning toward me, his face was just a few inches away. His palm burned my skin, like he had a fever.
โOh, right,โ I said. It was uncomfortable, having my face so close to his with his hand hot against my skin. โSam was running a temperature.โ
Jacob laughed again. โSamโs hand felt like heโd left it sitting on a hot stovetop.โ
He was so close, I could feel his warm breath. I reached up casually, to take his hand away and free my face, but wound my fingers through his so that I wouldnโt hurt his feelings. He smiled and leaned back, undeceived by my attempt at nonchalance.
โSo Mr. Ateara went straight to the other elders,โ Jacob went on. โThey were the only ones left who still knew, who remembered. Mr. Ateara, Billy, and Harry had actually seen their grandfathers make the change. When Old Quil told them, they met with Sam secretly and explained.
โIt was easier when he understood โ when he wasnโt alone anymore. They knew he wouldnโt be the only one affected by the Cullensโ returnโ โ he pronounced the name with unconscious bitterness โ โbut no one else was old enough. So Sam waited for the rest of us to join him. โ
โThe Cullens had no idea,โ I said in a whisper. โThey didnโt think that werewolves still existed here. They didnโt know that coming here would change you.โ
โIt doesnโt change the fact that it did.โ โRemind me not to get on your bad side.โ
โYou think I should be as forgiving as you are? We canโt all be saints and martyrs.โ
โGrow up, Jacob.โ
โI wish I could,โ he murmured quietly.
I stared at him, trying to make sense of his response. โWhat?โ Jacob chuckled. โOne of those many strange things I mentioned.โ
โYou . . . canโt . . . grow up?โ I said blankly. โYouโre what? Not . . .
aging? Is that a joke?โ
โNope.โ He popped his lips on theย P.
I felt blood flood my face. Tears โ tears of rage โ filled my eyes. My teeth mashed together with an audible grinding sound.
โBella? What did I say?โ
I was on my feet again, my hands balled up into fists, my whole frame shaking.
โYou. Are. Not. Aging,โ I growled through my teeth.
Jacob tugged my arm gently, trying to make me sit. โNone of us are.
Whatโs wrong with you?โ
โAm I the only one who has to getย old? I get older every stinking day!โ I nearly shrieked, throwing my hands in the air. Some little part of me recognized that I was throwing a Charlie-esque fit, but that rational part was greatly overshadowed by the irrational part. โDamnย it! What kind of world is this? Whereโs theย justice?โ
โTake it easy, Bella.โ
โShut up, Jacob. Just shut up! This isย soย unfair!โ
โDid you seriously just stamp your foot? I thought girls only did that on TV.โ
I growled unimpressively.
โItโs not as bad as you seem to think it is. Sit down and Iโll explain.โ โIโll stand.โ
He rolled his eyes. โOkay. Whatever you want. But listen, Iย willย get older . . . someday.โ
โExplain.โ
He patted the tree. I glowered for a second, but then sat; my temper had burned out as suddenly as it had flared and Iโd calmed down enough to
realize that I was making a fool of myself.
โWhen we get enough control to quit . . . ,โ Jacob said. โWhen we stop phasing for a solid length of time, we age again. Itโs not easy.โ He shook his head, abruptly doubtful. โItโs gonna take a really long time to learn that kind of restraint, I think. Even Samโs not there yet. โCourse it doesnโt help that thereโs a huge coven of vampires right down the road. We canโt even think about quitting when the tribe needs protectors. But you shouldnโt get all bent out of shape about it, anyway, because Iโm already older than you, physically at least.โ
โWhat are you talking about?โ
โLook at me, Bells. Do I look sixteen?โ
I glanced up and down his mammoth frame, trying to be unbiased. โNot exactly, I guess.โ
โNot at all. Because we reach full growth inside of a few months when the werewolf gene gets triggered. Itโs one hell of a growth spurt.โ He made a face. โPhysically, Iโm probably twenty-five or something. So thereโs no need for you to freak out about being too old for me for at least another seven years.โ
Twenty-five or something.ย The idea messed with my head. But I remembered that growth spurt โ I remembered watching him shoot up and fill out right before my eyes. I remembered how he would look different from one day to the next. I shook my head, feeling dizzy.
โSo, did you want to hear about Sam, or did you want to scream at me some more for things that are out of my control?โ
I took a deep breath. โSorry. Age is a touchy subject for me. That hit a nerve.โ
Jacobโs eyes tightened, and he looked as if he were trying to decide how to word something.
Since I didnโt want to talk about the truly touchy stuff โ my plans for the future, or treaties that might be broken by said plans, I prompted him. โSo once Sam understood what was going on, once he had Billy and Harry and Mr. Ateara, you said it wasnโt so hard anymore. And, like you also said, there are the cool parts. . . .โ I hesitated briefly. โWhy does Sam hate them so much? Why does he wish I would hate them?โ
Jacob sighed. โThis is the really weird part.โ โIโm a pro at weird.โ
โYeah, I know.โ He grinned before he continued. โSo, youโre right. Sam knew what was going on, and everything was almost okay. In most ways, his life was back to, well, not normal. But better.โ Then Jacobโs expression tightened, like something painful was coming. โSam couldnโt tell Leah. We arenโt supposed to tell anyone who doesnโt have to know. And it wasnโt really safe for him to be around her โ but he cheated, just like I did with you. Leah was furious that he wouldnโt tell her what was going on
โ where heโd been, where he went at night, why he was always so exhausted โ but they were working it out. They were trying. They really loved each other.โ
โDid she find out? Is that what happened?โ
He shook his head. โNo, that wasnโt the problem. Her cousin, Emily Young, came down from the Makah reservation to visit her one weekend.โ
I gasped. โEmily is Leahโs cousin?โ
โSecond cousins. Theyโre close, though. They were like sisters when they were kids.โ
โThatโs . . . horrible. How could Sam . . . ?โ I trailed off, shaking my head.
โDonโt judge him just yet. Did anyone ever tell you . . . Have you ever heard ofย imprinting?โ
โImprinting?โ I repeated the unfamiliar word. โNo. Whatโs that mean?โ
โItโs one of those bizarre things we have to deal with. It doesnโt happen to everyone. In fact, itโs the rare exception, not the rule. Sam had heard all the stories by then, the stories we all used to think were legends. Heโd heard of imprinting, but he never dreamed . . .โ
โWhat is it?โ I prodded.
Jacobโs eyes strayed to the ocean. โSam did love Leah. But when he saw Emily, that didnโt matter anymore. Sometimes . . . we donโt exactly know why . . . we find our mates that way.โ His eyes flashed back to me, his face reddening. โI mean . . . our soul mates.โ
โWhat way? Love at first sight?โ I snickered.
Jacob wasnโt smiling. His dark eyes were critical of my reaction. โItโs a little bit more powerful than that. More absolute.โ
โSorry,โ I muttered. โYouโre serious, arenโt you?โ โYeah, I am.โ
โLove at first sight? But more powerful?โ My voice still sounded dubious, and he could hear that.
โItโs not easy to explain. It doesnโt matter, anyway.โ He shrugged indifferently. โYou wanted to know what happened to Sam to make him hate the vampires for changing him, to make him hate himself. And thatโs what happened. He broke Leahโs heart. He went back on every promise heโd ever made her. Every day he has to see the accusation in her eyes, and know that sheโs right.โ
He stopped talking abruptly, as if heโd said something he hadnโt meant
to.
โHow did Emily deal with this? If she was so close to Leah . . . ?โ Sam
and Emily were utterlyย rightย together, two puzzle pieces, shaped for each other exactly. Still . . . how had Emily gotten past the fact that heโd belonged to someone else? Her sister, almost.
โShe was real angry, in the beginning. But itโs hard to resist that level of commitment and adoration.โ Jacob sighed. โAnd then, Sam could tell her everything. There are no rules that can bind you when you find your other half. You know how she got hurt?โ
โYeah.โ The story in Forks was that she was mauled by a bear, but I was in on the secret.
Werewolves are unstable, Edward had said.ย The people near them get
hurt.
โWell, weirdly enough, that was sort of how they resolved things. Sam
was so horrified, so sickened by himself, so full of hate for what heโd done.
. . . He would have thrown himself under a bus if it would have made her feel better. He might have anyway, just to escape what heโd done. He was shattered. . . . Then, somehow,ย sheย was the one comfortingย him, and after that. โ
Jacob didnโt finish his thought, and I sensed the story had gotten too personal to share.
โPoor Emily,โ I whispered. โPoor Sam. Poor Leah. โ
โYeah, Leah got the worst end of the stick,โ he agreed. โShe puts on a brave face. Sheโs going to be a bridesmaid.โ
I gazed away, toward the jagged rocks that rose from the ocean like stubby broken-off fingers on the south rim of the harbor, while I tried to
make sense of it all. I could feel his eyes on my face, waiting for me to say something.
โDid it happen to you?โ I finally asked, still looking away. โThis love- at-first-sight thing?โ
โNo,โ he answered briskly. โSam and Jared are the only ones.โ
โHmm,โ I said, trying to sound only politely interested. I was relieved, and I tried to explain my reaction to myself. I decided I was just glad he didnโt claim there was some mystical, wolfy connection between the two of us. Our relationship was confusing enough as it was. I didnโt need any more of the supernatural than I already had to deal with.
He was quiet, too, and the silence felt a little awkward. My intuition told me that I didnโt want to hear what he was thinking.
โHow did that work out for Jared?โ I asked to break the silence.
โNo drama there. It was just a girl heโd sat next to in school every day for a year and never looked at twice. And then, after he changed, he saw her again and never looked away. Kim was thrilled. Sheโd had a huge crush on him. Sheโd had his last name tacked on to the end of hers all over in her diary.โ He laughed mockingly.
I frowned. โDid Jared tell you that? He shouldnโt have.โ
Jacob bit his lip. โI guess I shouldnโt laugh. It was funny, though.โ โSome soul mate.โ
He sighed. โJared didnโt tell us anything on purpose. I already told you this part, remember?โ
โOh, yeah. You can hear each otherโs thoughts, but only when youโre wolves, right?โ
โRight. Just like your bloodsucker.โ He glowered. โEdward,โ I corrected.
โSure, sure. Thatโs how come I know so much about how Sam felt. Itโs not like he would have told us all that if heโd had a choice. Actually, thatโs something we all hate.โ The bitterness was abruptly harsh in his voice. โItโs awful. No privacy, no secrets. Everything youโre ashamed of, laid out for everyone to see.โ He shuddered.
โIt sounds horrible,โ I whispered.
โItย isย sometimes helpful when we need to coordinate,โ he said grudgingly. โOnce in a blue moon, when some bloodsucker crosses into our territory. Laurent was fun. And if the Cullens hadnโt gotten in our way last
Saturday . . . ugh!โ he groaned. โWe could have had her!โ His fists clenched into angry balls.
I flinched. As much as I worried about Jasper or Emmett getting hurt, it was nothing like the panic I felt at the idea of Jacob going up against Victoria. Emmett and Jasper were the closest thing to indestructible I could imagine. Jacob was still warm, still comparatively human. Mortal. I thought of Jacob facing Victoria, her brilliant hair blowing around her oddly feline face . . . and shuddered.
Jacob looked up at me with a curious expression. โBut isnโt it like that for you all the time? Havingย himย in your head?โ
โOh, no. Edwardโs never in my head. He only wishes.โ Jacobโs expression became confused.
โHe canโt hear me,โ I explained, my voice a tiny bit smug from old habit. โIโm the only one like that, for him. We donโt knowย whyย he canโt.โ
โWeird,โ Jacob said.
โYeah.โ The smugness faded. โIt probably means thereโs something wrong with my brain,โ I admitted.
โI already knew there was something wrong with your brain,โ Jacob muttered.
โThanks.โ
The sun broke through the clouds suddenly, a surprise I hadnโt been expecting, and I had to narrow my eyes against the glare off the water. Everything changed color โ the waves turned from gray to blue, the trees from dull olive to brilliant jade, and the rainbow-hued pebbles glittered like jewels.
We squinted for a moment, letting our eyes adjust. There were no sounds besides the hollow roar of the waves that echoed from every side of the sheltered harbor, the soft grinding of the stones against each other under the waterโs movement, and the cry of gulls high overhead. It was very peaceful.
Jacob settled closer to me, so that he was leaning against my arm. He was so warm. After a minute of this, I shrugged out of my rain jacket. He made a little sound of contentment in the back of his throat, and rested his cheek on the top of my head. I could feel the sun heat my skin โ thought it was not quite as warm as Jacob โ and I wondered idly how long it would take me to burn.
Absentmindedly, I twisted my right hand to the side, and watched the sunlight glitter subtly off the scar James had left there.
โWhat are you thinking about?โ he murmured. โThe sun.โ
โMmm. Itโs nice.โ
โWhat are you thinking about?โ I asked.
He chuckled to himself. โI was remembering that moronic movie you took me to. And Mike Newton puking all over everything.โ
I laughed, too, surprised by how time had changed the memory. It used to be one of stress, of confusion. So much had changed that night. And
now I could laugh. It was the last night Jacob and I had had before heโd learned the truth about his heritage. The last human memory. An oddly pleasant memory now.
โI miss that,โ Jacob said. โThe way it used to be so easy . . . uncomplicated. Iโm glad Iโve got a good memory.โ He sighed.
He felt the sudden tension in my body as his words triggered a memory of my own.
โWhat is it?โ he asked.
โAbout that good memory of yours . . .โ I pulled away from him so that I could read his face. At the moment, it was confused. โDo you mind telling me what you were doing Monday morning? You were thinking something that bothered Edward.โย Botheredย wasnโt quite the word for it, but I wanted an answer, so I thought it was best not to start out too severely.
Jacobโs face brightened with understanding, and he laughed. โI was just thinking about you. Didnโt like that much, did he?โ
โMe?ย What about me?โ
Jacob laughed, with a harder edge this time. โI was remembering the way you looked that night Sam found you โ Iโve seen it in his head, and itโs like I was there; that memory has always haunted Sam, you know. And then I remembered how you looked the first time you came to my place. I bet you donโt even realize what a mess you were then, Bella. It was weeks before you started to look human again. And I remembered how you always used to have your arms wrapped around yourself, trying to hold yourself together. . . .โ Jacob winced, and then shook his head. โItโs hard for me to remember how sad you were, and it wasnโtย myย fault. So I figured it would be harder for him. And I thought he ought to get a look at what heโd done.โ
I smacked his shoulder. It hurt my hand. โJacob Black, donโt you ever do that again! Promise me you wonโt.โ
โNo way. I havenโt had that much fun in months.โ โSo help me, Jake โโ
โOh, get a grip, Bella. When am I ever going to see him again? Donโt worry about it.โ
I got to my feet, and he caught my hand as I started to walk away. I tried to tug free.
โIโm leaving, Jacob.โ
โNo, donโt go yet,โ he protested, his hand tightening around mine. โIโm sorry. And . . . okay, I wonโt do it again. Promise.โ
I sighed. โThanks, Jake.โ
โCome on, weโll go back to my house,โ he said eagerly.
โActually, I think I really do need to go. Angela Weber is expecting me, and I know Alice is worried. I donโt want to upset her too much.โ
โBut you just got here!โ
โIt feels that way,โ I agreed. I glared up at the sun, somehow already directly overhead. How had the time passed so quickly?
His eyebrows pulled down over his eyes. โI donโt know when Iโll see you again,โ he said in a hurt voice.
โIโll come back the next time heโs away,โ I promised impulsively.
โAway?โย Jacob rolled his eyes. โThatโs a nice way to describe what heโs doing. Disgusting parasites.โ
โIf you canโt be nice, I wonโt come back at all!โ I threatened, trying to pull my hand free. He refused to let go.
โAw, donโt be mad,โ he said, grinning. โKnee-jerk reaction.โ
โIf Iโm going to try to come back again, youโre going to have to get something straight, okay?โ
He waited.
โSee,โ I explained. โI donโt care whoโs a vampire and whoโs a werewolf. Thatโs irrelevant. You are Jacob, and he is Edward, and I am Bella. And nothing else matters.โ
His eyes narrowed slightly. โBut Iย amย a werewolf,โ he said unwillingly. โAnd heย isย a vampire,โ he added with obvious revulsion.
โAnd Iโm a Virgo!โ I shouted, exasperated.
He raised his eyebrows, measuring my expression with curious eyes.
Finally, he shrugged.
โIf you can really see it that way . . .โ โI can. I do.โ
โOkay. Just Bella and Jacob. None of those freaky Virgos here.โ He smiled at me, the warm, familiar smile that I had missed so much. I felt the answering smile spread across my face.
โIโve really missed you, Jake,โ I admitted impulsively.
โMe, too,โ his smile widened. His eyes were happy and clear, free for once of the angry bitterness. โMore than you know. Will you come back soon?โ
โAs soon as I can,โ I promised.
