Iย expect better next time,โ Vincent Blake told Toby. โYouโre a Blake now, and Blakes donโt lose to little girls.โ
I caught Tobyโs gaze. โIโm sorry,โ I said quietly, urgently. โDonโt be.โ Toby reached out to cup my face. โI see so
much of your mother in you.โ
That felt far too much like good-bye. From the moment Eve had arrived at the gates of Hawthorne House, I had been determined toย get him back. And nowโ
โWill Iโฆโ The words stopped, like the question was gumming up my throat. โCan I see you?โ I asked.
You have a daughter, I could hear myself saying.
I have two.
Blake didnโt give Toby the chance to reply. He shifted his attention to Eve. She basked in it, like he was the sun and she had the type of skin that didnโt burn. For the first time, instead of looking at her and seeing Emily, I saw something very different.
An intensity that was Tobyโs.ย Blakeโs.
โIf I win this gameโฆ,โ she said, steel and wonder in her tone.
โItโs yours,โ Blake confirmed. โAll of it. But before we beginโฆโ Blake lifted a finger, and a member of his security team rushed over. โCould you fetch our other guest for Ms. Grambs?โ
Grayson.ย I didnโt let myself fully believe that he was okay until I saw him, and then I let myself think about what Iโd wonโnot just his freedom, but a promise that no one I cared about would find themselves aย guestย here again.
โAvery.โ Graysonโs blue-gray eyesโhis irises icy and light against the inky black of his pupilsโlocked on to mine. โI had a plan.โ
โReckless self-sacrifice?โ I retorted. โYeah, I got that.โ I pulled him close and spoke directly into his ear. โI told you, Grayson, weโreย family.โ
I let go of him. The board was set up a final time. Eve was white. I was black. With tens of thousands of diamonds glittering between us, we faced off in a game of greatest stakes.
Based on Eveโs level of play against Toby, I hadnโt anticipated the challenge I soon found myself facing. It was like sheโd watched my game against her father, internalized a dozen new strategies, and learned how I saw the board.
Sheโs playing to win.ย I was desperate to save Oren, and I had no idea how much of a crimeย Iย had committed by not reporting Sheffield Graysonโs death. But Eve? She was playing for the keys to the kingdomโfor wealth and power beyond imagining.
For acceptance from someone she was desperate to be accepted by.
The rest of the room faded away until I couldnโt hear anything but the sounds of my own body and couldnโt see anything but the board. It took longer than Iโd anticipated, but finally, I saw my opening.
I could have her in check in three moves, checkmate in five.
Just like that, I could walk away from here with Grayson, knowing that Vincent Blake had that many fewer ways of coming at me.
But heโll still come.
The assaults on my financial interests, the paparazzi, playing games and boxing me in.ย Heโll just keep coming.ย That thought grew louder in my mind, pushing my focus from my match against Eve to the bigger picture.
For me,ย thisย wasnโt the ultimate game.
I could win, and I would still walk out of here no better off than when Tobias Hawthorne had died. It would still be hunting season. A man who Tobias Hawthorne had so feared that he had left a virtual stranger his fortune would still be gunning for me.
Even without violence, even with our physical safety guaranteed, Vincent Blake would still find a way of destroying anyone, everyone, and everything that stood in his way.
This win right now against Eveโit wouldnโt be enough.
I had to play the long game. I had to look past the board, play ten moves ahead, not five, think in three dimensions, not two. If I beat Eve, Vincent Blake would send me on my way, and heโd do so knowing that I was more than heโd given me credit for. Heโd adjust his expectations in the future.
Youโre young.ย Tobias Hawthorneโs voice rang in my mind.ย Youโre female. Youโre nobodyโuse that. If I gave Vincent Blake an excuse to continue underestimating me, he would.
Iโd come here with a plan in mind. The tournament hadnโt been a part of that planโbut I could use it.
Playing chess wasnโt just about anticipating your opponentโs moves. It was about planting those moves in their mindโbaiting them. After listening to the recording the old man had left for us, Xander had marveled at the fact that Tobias Hawthorne had foreseen exactly what we would all do after his death, but Hawthorne hadnโt just foreseen it.
Heโd manipulated it. Manipulated us.
If I wanted to beat Blake, I had to do the same. So I didnโt take the opening Eve had given me. I didnโt beat her in five moves.
I let her beat me in ten.
I saw the exact moment when Eve realized that Vincent Blakeโs empire was in her graspโand the moment, right
afterward, when Tobyโs eyes flashed. Did he suspect Iโd thrown the game?
Did myย realย opponent?
โWell done, Eve.โ Blake offered her a small, self-satisfied smile, and Eve glowed, the smile on her face luminescent. Blake turned to meโand Grayson. โThe two of you may leave.โ
His men closed in on us, and I didnโt have to fake my panic. โWait!โ I said, sounding desperateโand feeling that desperation, because even though this had been a calculated risk, I had no way of knowing that I hadnโt miscalculated. โGive me another chance!โ
โHave some dignity, child.โ Blake stood and turned his back on me as his hunting dog returned to his side and dropped a dead duck at his feet. โNo one likes a sore loser.โ โYou could still have a favor,โ I shouted as Blakeโs
security began to remove me from the premises. โOne last game. Me against you.โ
โI donโt need a favor from you, girl.โ
Thatโs okay, I tried to tell myself.ย Thereโs another option.ย An option Iโd come prepared for. An option Iโd planned for. The gift of the chess set, the fact that I had Alisa waiting for me outsideโIโd always known what my gambit was going to be.
What it was going toย haveย to be.
โNot a favor, then,โ I said, trying to hold on to the panic and the desperation so he wouldnโt see the deep sense of calm rising up inside me. โWhat about the rest of it?โ
Grayson cut a sharp look in my direction. โAvery.โ
Vincent Blake held up his hand, and his men all took a silent step back. โThe rest of what, exactly?โ
โThe Hawthorne fortune.โ I let the words come out in a rush. โMy lawyer has been after me to sign these papers for weeks. Tobias Hawthorne didnโt tie my inheritance up in a trust. The fine people at McNamara, Ortega, and Jones are nervous about a teenager taking the reins, so Alisa
drew up paperwork that would put everything in a trust until I turn thirty.โ
โAvery.โ Tobyโs voice was low and full of warning. Part of me wanted to believe he was just helping me sell the in- over-my-head act, but he was probably offering a genuine word of caution.
I was risking too much.
โIf you play me,โ I told Blake, nodding toward the chessboard, โand you win, Iโll sign the papers and makeย youย the trustee.โ
Coming here, Iโd been counting on Blakeโs ego to make him think that he could beat me, but there had always been the chance that he would realize Iโd suggested chess specifically because I stood a good chance at winning. But now?
Heโd seen me play. Heโd seen me lose.
He thought I was making this offer on impulseย becauseย I had lost.
And still, he looked at me with sharp eyes and the most suspicious of smiles. โNow, why would you do a thing like that?โ
โI donโt want anyone finding out about Sheffield Grayson,โ I bit out. โAnd Iโve read the paperwork! With a trust, the money would still belong to me. I just wouldnโt control it. You would have to promise me that you would okay any purchases I wanted to make, that youโd let me spend as much money as I wanted, whenever I wanted. But everything I canโt spend? Youโd be the one making the decisions about how itโs invested.โ
Do you know what the real difference is between millions and billions?ย Skye Hawthorne had asked, what felt like a small eternity ago.ย Because at a certain point, itโs not about the money.
It was about the power.
Vincent Blake didnโt want or need Tobias Hawthorneโs
fortune toย spendย it.
โAll of this, for double or nothing?โ Blake asked pointedly. Like Tobias Hawthorne, the man across from me thought seven steps ahead. He knew I had another card up my sleeve.
But hopefully just one.
โNo,โ I admitted. โIf you win, you get control of everything free and clear until Iโm thirty or youโre six feet under. But if I win, you make sure that any nasty rumors about Sheffield Grayson stay buried,ย andย you give me your word that this ends here.โ
This was the plan. This had always been the plan.ย My greatest adversaryโand yours nowโis an honor-bound man, Tobias Hawthorne had told me.ย Best him, and heโll honor the win.
โIf I win,โ I continued, โthe armistice you had with Tobias Hawthorneโyou extend that to me. End of hunting season.โ I gave him a hard look, which I deeply suspected he found amusing. โYou let me go, the way you let a young Tobias Hawthorne go, way back when.โ
I willed him to see me as impulsive, to see this as me scrambling because Iโd lost.ย Iโm young. Iโm female. Iโm nobody. And you just saw Eve beat me at chess.
โHow am I to know youโll keep up your end of the deal?โ my adversary queried.
It took everything in me not to allow even a shadow of victory to pulse through me. โIf you accept the wager,โ I said, all wide eyes and bravado, โweโll make two calls: one to your lawyer and one to mine.โ
