Chapter no 67

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Iย locked my hand around the USB. As I pulled it out, my mind raced. The drive definitely hadnโ€™t been sitting in a tomb for twenty years. It looked new.

โ€œYou know, Avery, I want to be surprised that you got here first, but Iโ€™m not.โ€ย Eve.ย I whipped my head up to see her standing in the chapel doorway beneath a stone arch. โ€œSome people just have that magic touch,โ€ she continued softly. She walked toward me, toward the altar. โ€œWhat did you find in there?โ€

She sounded hesitant, vulnerable, but the second Oren stepped into her path, the matching expression on her face flickered like a light bulb a second before it burns out.

โ€œThere was supposed to be human remains in there,โ€ Eve said calmly.ย Tooย calmly. โ€œBut there werenโ€™t, were there?โ€ She cocked her head to the side, her hair falling in gentle amber waves as her gaze landed on the USB in my hand. โ€œIโ€™m going to need you to give me that.โ€

โ€œAre you out of your mind?โ€ I asked. I didnโ€™t notice her hands moving until it was too late.

Sheโ€™s got a gun.ย Eve held her weapon the way that Nash had taught me to hold mine.ย Her gun is pointed straight at me.ย That thought shouldnโ€™t have computed, but I had a knife in my boot. Iโ€™d spent all that time training. So when my body should have been panicking, an unnatural calm settled over me instead.

Oren drew his sidearm. โ€œPut the weapon down,โ€ he ordered.

It was like Eve didnโ€™t even hear him, like the only person

in this room she could see or hear was me.

โ€œWhere did you even get a gun?โ€ I was stalling for time, assessing the situation. โ€œThereโ€™s no way you made it onto the estate with one that first morning.โ€ Even as I said the words, I thought about Eve bolting the moment sheโ€™d โ€œdiscoveredโ€ Vincent Blakeโ€™s name.

โ€œPut the gun down!โ€ Oren repeated. โ€œI guarantee you that I can get a shot off before you can, and I donโ€™t miss.โ€

Eve took a step forward, utterly, beautifully unafraid. โ€œAre you really going to let your bodyguard shoot me, Avery?โ€

This was a different Eve. Gone were the layers of self- protection, the vulnerability, the raw emotionโ€”all of it.

โ€œYou helped Blake abduct Toby, didnโ€™t you?โ€ I said, certainty washing over me like a wave of heat.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have had to,โ€ Eve replied, her tone smooth and hard, โ€œif Toby had opened up. If heโ€™d just agreed to bring me here.ย But he wouldnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThis is the last time that Iโ€™m going to tell you to put the gun down!โ€ Oren boomed.

โ€œIโ€™m still Tobyโ€™s daughter,โ€ Eve said, adopting a familiar, wide-eyed expression, her gun unwavering. โ€œAnd honestly, Avery, how do you think Gray will feel if Oren shoots me? What do you think will happen if that beautiful, broken boy walks in here to find me bleeding out on the floor?โ€

At her mention of Grayson, I instinctively looked for him, but he wasnโ€™t there. My body shaking with pent-up rage, I turned to Oren. โ€œPut the gun down,โ€ I told him.

My head of security stepped directly in front of me. โ€œShe puts hers down first.โ€

A haughty expression on her face, Eve lowered her weapon. Oren was on her in an instant, taking her to the ground, pinning her down.

Eve looked up at me from the chapel floor and smiled. โ€œYou want Toby back, and I want whatever you found in that tomb.โ€

Sheโ€™d called it a tomb. Sheโ€™d said earlier that there were supposed to be remains in there. I wondered how sheโ€™d come to that conclusion, and then I remembered where Iโ€™d left herโ€”and with whom. โ€œMallory,โ€ I said.

โ€œShe admitted that Liam didnโ€™t leave. I believe her exact words wereย There was so much blood.โ€ Eveโ€™s gaze went to the altar. โ€œSo whereโ€™s the body?โ€

โ€œIs that really all you care about?โ€ I asked her. From the very beginning, sheโ€™d told me that there was only one thing that mattered to her. I was starting to think that wasnโ€™t a lieโ€”it was just that her single-minded purpose had nothing to do with Toby.

It had never been about Toby.

โ€œCaringย is a recipe for getting hurt, and I havenโ€™t let anyone hurt me in a very long time.โ€ Eve smiled again, like she was the one who had the upper hand, not the one pinned to the ground. โ€œIn all fairness, I did warn you, Avery. I told you that if I were you, I wouldnโ€™t trust me, either. I told you that I am a person who will do anythingโ€”anything

โ€”to get what I want. I told you thatย invisibleย is the one thing that I will never be.โ€

โ€œAnd Toby,โ€ I said, staring at her, sick understanding coming over me, โ€œwanted you to hide.โ€

โ€œBlake wants me by his side,โ€ Eve said, zeal in her voice. โ€œI just have to prove myself first.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have one of the seals yet, do you?โ€ I asked. I thought about Nan saying that Vincent Blake didnโ€™t give anyoneโ€”not even familyโ€”a free ride.

โ€œIโ€™m going to get one,โ€ Eve told me, her voice burning with the fury of purpose. โ€œGive me that USB, and maybe you can get what you want, too.โ€ She paused, then hit a nail right through my heart. โ€œToby.โ€

I hated even hearing her say his name. โ€œHow could you do this?โ€ I said, thinking of the picture Blake had sent, the bruises on his faceโ€”and then of the pictures of Toby and Eve on Eveโ€™s camera roll. โ€œHe trusted you.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s easy to make people trust you,โ€ Eve commented softly, โ€œif you let them see you bleed.โ€ I thought about the bruises sheโ€™d shown up here sporting and wondered if sheโ€™dย toldย someone to hit her. โ€œYou can spend your whole life trying not to hurt,โ€ Eve continued, her voice high and clear, โ€œbut making people hurtย forย you? Thatโ€™s real power.โ€

I thought of Toby telling me that he had two daughters.

โ€œGive me the USB,โ€ Eve said again, her eyes still blazing, โ€œand you wonโ€™t ever have to see me again, Avery. Iโ€™ll earn my seal, and you can have this place and those boys all to yourself. Win-win.โ€

She was delusional. Oren had her pinned. Sheโ€™d come at meย with a gun. She was in no position to negotiate. โ€œIโ€™m not giving you anything,โ€ I said.

A flash of movement.ย I whipped my head toward the chapel door. Grayson stood there, backlit, his eyes locked on Oren, who was still restraining Eve.

โ€œLet her go,โ€ Grayson ordered.

โ€œSheโ€™s a threat.โ€ Oren clipped the words. โ€œShe pulled a gun on Avery. The only place I amย lettingย her go is far, far away from all of you.โ€

โ€œGrayson.โ€ I felt sick. โ€œThis isnโ€™t what it looks likeโ€”โ€

โ€œHelp me,โ€ Eve begged him. โ€œGet the USB that Avery has. Donโ€™t let them take this from me, too.โ€

Grayson stared at her a moment longer, then walked slowly toward me. He took the USB from my hand. I just stood there. Feeling like my insides had been hollowed out, I watched as he turned back to Eve. โ€œI canโ€™t let you have this,โ€ Grayson said softly.

โ€œGraysonโ€”โ€ Eve and I said his name in unison. โ€œI heard.โ€

Eve was unabashed. โ€œWhatever you heard, youย knowย that I am not the villain here, Grayson. Your grandfatherโ€” he owed me better. He owed you better, and you and your family owe Averyย nothing.โ€

Graysonโ€™s eyes met mine. โ€œI owe her more than she

realizes.โ€

A dam broke inside me, and all of the hurt I hadnโ€™t let myself feel came flooding out, and with it, everything else I feltโ€”and had ever feltโ€”for Grayson Hawthorne.

โ€œYouโ€™re as bad as your grandfather was,โ€ Eve tried. โ€œLook at me, Grayson.ย Look at me.โ€

He did.

โ€œIf you let Oren kick me out of here or call the police, if you try to force me to go back to Vincent Blake empty- handed, I swear to you, I will find a cliff to jump off of.โ€ There was something fierce and mad and savage in Eveโ€™s voiceโ€”something that sold that threat completely. โ€œEmilyโ€™s blood is on your hands. Do you really want mine there, too?โ€

Grayson stared at her. I could see him reliving the moment heโ€™d found Emily. I could see the effect that Eveโ€™s specific threatโ€”aย cliffโ€”had on him. I could see Grayson Davenport Hawthorne drowning, fighting the undertow in vain. And then I saw him stop fighting and let the memories and the grief and the truth wash over him.

And then Grayson took a breath. โ€œYouโ€™re a big girl,โ€ he told Eve. โ€œYou make your own choices. Whatever you do after Oren sends you packingโ€”thatโ€™s on you.โ€

I wondered if he really meant that. If he believed it. โ€œThis is your chance,โ€ Eve said, fighting Orenโ€™s grip.

โ€œThis is redemption, Grayson. Iโ€™m yours, and you could be mine. Itโ€™s your fault Emilyโ€™s dead. You could have stopped herโ€”โ€

Grayson took a single step toward her. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have had to.โ€ He looked down at the USB in his hand. โ€œAnd this would be useless to you.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t know that.โ€ Eve was a wild thing now, fighting Oren with everything she had.

โ€œAssuming this USB is my grandfatherโ€™s handiwork,โ€ Grayson told her, โ€œyou would need a decoder to make sense of any of the files. A Hawthorne never leaves any

knowledge of value unprotected.โ€

โ€œSo Iโ€™ll break the encryption,โ€ Eve said dismissively.

Grayson arched an eyebrow at her. โ€œNot without a second drive.โ€

A second drive.

โ€œYou canโ€™t do this to me, Grayson. Weโ€™re the same, you and I.โ€ There was something in the way Eve said that, something in her voice that made me think she believed it.

Grayson didnโ€™t blink. โ€œNot anymore.โ€

An instant later, Orenโ€™s men came crashing through the door.

Oren turned to me. โ€œHow do you want to handle this, Avery?โ€

Eve had pointed a gun at me. That, at least, was a crime. Lying to us wasnโ€™t. Manipulating us wasnโ€™t. I couldnโ€™t prove anything else. And she wasnโ€™t theย realย enemy here.

The real threat.

โ€œHave your men escort Eve off the estate,โ€ I told Oren. โ€œWeโ€™ll deal directly with Vincent Blake from now on.โ€

Eve didnโ€™t make them drag her. โ€œYou havenโ€™t won,โ€ she told me. โ€œHeโ€™ll keep comingโ€”and sooner or later, all of you will wish to God that this had ended with me.โ€
