Chapter no 44 – Corrick

Defy the Night

The east wing of the palace has signiย cant smoke andย re damage, and it is uninhabitable, but the west side fared much better.ย ๎ขere were many casualties, but due to the late hour of the attack, many of the palace sta๏ฌ€ย had already le๎‚ย for the night. By the time we return to the palace with Tessa and the consuls, Iโ€™m shocked to discover that Quint has already given orders and had rooms preparedโ€”before apparently collapsing on a chaise longue in the dimly lit salon.

๎ขe consuls shu๏ฌ„e o๏ฌ€ย to their rooms, but Harristan hesitates in the hallway. He studies Quint, sound asleep to the point where heโ€™s almost drooling.

โ€œIโ€™ll wake him,โ€ I say.

โ€œNo. Let him sleep.โ€ Harristan shi๎‚s his eyes to me.

I canโ€™t read anything in his expression, but his eyes are piercing. We may have stopped the rebelsโ€”for nowโ€”but there is a lot le๎‚ย unsaid between us. I want to collapse onto that chaise beside Quint, but I brace myself.

Harristan inhales, but Tessa holds up a hand. โ€œTomorrow,โ€ she whispers. My brother shuts his mouth, but now his gaze shi๎‚s to her.

Tessa almost falters, but then she steels herself. โ€œTomorrow. Your Majesty.

If you please. If . . . ah, if I may add to my list of demands.โ€ โ€œYou may,โ€ he concedes.

I look at her, and even battle worn and road weary, sheโ€™s more lovely than Iโ€™ve ever seen. โ€œYour demands?โ€

She blushes, then bites at her lip.

Before she can say anything, Harristan claps me on the shoulder. โ€œYou heard her, Cory. Tomorrow.โ€

Tomorrow comes, but Harristan doesnโ€™t visit my chambers. Not the following day either. He sends me a message to rest, to recover, to wait. I hear from the guards that he is meeting with each of the consuls individually, discussing plans to move forward. Lissa Marpetta has retreated to her sector, and Harristan has sent an army regiment to bring her back to the palace to answer for the fraudulent Moonย ower petals.

Consul Sallister attempted to leave, but he was stopped at the gate. Every message he sends is scrutinized. Every shipment of Moonย ower petals is inspected before itโ€™s distributed.

Tensions in the sector havenโ€™t lessened.ย ๎ขe people are afraid of the rebels

โ€”and theyโ€™re afraid that the supply of medicine will stop.ย ๎ขereโ€™s a nervous hum to the city thatโ€™s very di๏ฌ€erent from before.

But I hear of no attacks. I hear no alarms.

I hear of no one in the Hold either. No summons for the Kingโ€™s Justice.

Quint doesnโ€™t visit me much, but heโ€™s as busy as my brother, arranging for tradesmen and carpenters and steelworkers to rebuild the east wing.

Tessa visits me o๎‚en. Every break during her time with the palace physicians, every dinner, every spare minute. I teach her to play chess, and she immediately beats me in a game. She tells me that the palace apothecary was killed in the attack, but there are rumors that he was working with Lissa Marpetta.

I soak up every bit of gossip, and I worry for my brother. I worry for Kandala. I worry that we wonโ€™t have any way to move forward, that weโ€™ll hit the end of the eight weeks and weโ€™ll be no closer to a solution.

Tessa worries about the same.

I send my brother messages, requests, inquiries. Demands.

His response is always the same:ย Tomorrow. Atย rst, I enjoyed the respite.

By the seventh day, my ankle doesnโ€™t pain me, and most of my bruises have faded. Iโ€™m ready to don my mask and hat and stride into the woods as Wes, just for a chance to break the boredom.

When yet another deferral is delivered to my chambersโ€”Tomorrow, Cory, if there is timeโ€”I crumple it up and toss it into theย replace.

๎ขen I stride down the hallway to his room.

Rocco is on duty, and while my brotherโ€™s guards have never stopped me from entering Harristanโ€™s quarters, I wonder if things have changed.

But Rocco gives me a nod. โ€œYour Highness.ย ๎ขe king is dining with Master Quint.โ€

โ€œMarvelous. Iโ€™ll join them.โ€ I grab hold of the door handle.

Harristan is talking and Quint is writing when I barrel into the room.

๎ขey both look up at me in surprise.

Quint stands at once. โ€œYour Highness.โ€

โ€œCorrick,โ€ says Harristan. โ€œI sent word that we could meet tomorrow.โ€ โ€œHmm.โ€ I move to the side table and pour myself a glass of brandy. โ€œI

believe Iโ€™ve heard that before.โ€

โ€œShall I allow you a moment of privacy?โ€ Quint says. He gathers his papers.

โ€œYes,โ€ I say.

โ€œNo,โ€ says Harristan. โ€œCorrick, we can meet tomorrowโ€”โ€

โ€œI am the Kingโ€™s Justice,โ€ I snap, โ€œand half the consuls were embroiled in a treasonous plot against you, Harristan. I should be a part of your meetings.โ€ I step close and slam my glass down on the table. โ€œI should be interrogating them. I should be reviewing their holdings and their dosages and theirโ€”โ€

โ€œEnough.โ€ Harristan puts up a hand. โ€œYouโ€™re right.ย ๎ขe Kingโ€™s Justice should be doing those things.โ€ He pauses, and thereโ€™s no censure in his voice. โ€œBut from what Iโ€™ve learned, you were unhappy in that role.โ€

My brotherโ€™s voice is quiet, but full of weight.ย ๎ขe room seems to tilt, just for a second.

I donโ€™t know what to say.

I donโ€™t know what Iย wantย to say.

To my horror, my chest tightens, and I have to look away.

Quintย nishes gathering his papers. โ€œI will have another meal sent.โ€ But as he approaches the door, he stops beside me. โ€œBefore you went to the Circle with Tessa, I said you can only be the Kingโ€™s Justice.โ€ He pauses. โ€œI was wrong. You should be Corrick.โ€ He glances at Harristan and then back at me. โ€œEspecially here. Especially now. Youโ€™ve come too far.โ€

I have to swallow. โ€œ๎ขank you, Quint.โ€

โ€œAlways.โ€

๎ขen heโ€™s gone, and Iโ€™m alone with my brother.

I take a long breath, then down the glass of brandy. I move back to the side table to pour another.

Harristan appears at my side, and he takes the bottle out of my hands. โ€œCory.โ€

โ€œWho will you choose in my place?โ€ I say, and my voice is harsher than I expect. โ€œYou know, Rocco is more savvy than I gave him credit for, and he wouldnโ€™tย inch from violenceโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not replacing you.โ€

โ€œAh, so youโ€™re going to leave me to rot in my chambers?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ He sighs. โ€œI was trying to see if I could understand what it is that you do.โ€

I freeze. โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

โ€œIt means Iโ€™ve been interrogating the consuls. Iโ€™ve been to the Hold. Iโ€™ve beenโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been to theย Hold?โ€

โ€œYes. You were correct about prisoners using chairs as weapons.โ€ Against my will, that makes me laugh. โ€œI told you.โ€

He doesnโ€™t smile. His eyes search mine. โ€œIโ€™m not replacing you. But I donโ€™t want to return to the status quo. I donโ€™t want to hide behind the Kingโ€™s Justice.โ€

โ€œYou never hide, Harristan.โ€

โ€œFather did.โ€ He pauses. โ€œAnd I wonder if thatโ€™s part of why they were killed.โ€ Another pause. โ€œ๎ขere are very few people in the palace whom I trust. I would never replace you.โ€

๎ขat sentence doesnโ€™t sound complete, so I raise my eyebrows. โ€œBut . . . ?โ€ โ€œBut . . . I do not want you to think you must hide your true intent from

me.โ€ His voice sharpens. โ€œI do not want to think that you would lie to me.โ€

I swallow and look away. I think of that moment in the Hold when Allisander declared that my brother was not my friend, that he le๎‚ย me in the Hold for an entire day. He wasnโ€™t wrong about that momentโ€”but the choices that put me there werenโ€™t Harristanโ€™s.ย ๎ขe blame was mine. โ€œForgive me.โ€

He hesitates, then reaches out to ru๏ฌ„e my hair, the way he did in the Hold. โ€œYouโ€™re forgiven.โ€

I roll my eyes and duck away. โ€œSo . . . you donโ€™t want me to be Cruel Corrick anymore?โ€

He grimaces. โ€œ๎ขere is so much gossip and unrest. If even a fraction of it is true, I think youโ€™ll have plenty of opportunities to be Cruel Corrick. But . .

. we have focused on the crimes of those who have little, those who commit crimes of desperation.ย ๎ขe true insurrection was here in the Royal Sector. With us.โ€

โ€œDo you have any ideas?โ€

โ€œI was giving them to Quint before you burst in here.โ€ He sighs and pours himself a glass of brandy, then smacks my hand away when I reach for the bottle. โ€œI still have no idea why Roydan and Arella have been meeting secretly to review shipping logs. And weโ€™ll have to do something about Leander Cra๎‚โ€™s sector. I canโ€™t have two sectors without a consul.ย ๎ขose explosives came out of Traderโ€™s Landing, so weโ€™ll need to discover how they were smuggled out. I suspect we may have more traitors in our midst than just Allisander.โ€ He runs a hand through his hair. โ€œWeโ€™ll need to appoint someone to overseeโ€”โ€

A knock sounds at the door. โ€œYour Majesty,โ€ a guard calls. โ€œAnother meal has arrived.โ€

I smile at my brother. โ€œLetโ€™s get to work.โ€
