โTrouble in paradise, Mr Warner?โ
Iโve got him by the throat in seconds, shock disfiguring his expression as I slam his body against the wall. โYou,โ I say angrily. โYou forced me into this impossible position.ย Why?โ
Castle tries to swallow but canโt, his eyes wide but unafraid. When he speaks his words are raspy, suffocated. โYou had to do it,โ he chokes out. โIt had to happen. She needed to be warned, and it had to come from you.โ
โI donโt believe you,โ I shout, shoving him harder against the wall. โAnd I donโt know why I ever trusted you.โ
โPlease, son. Put me down.โ
I ease up, only a little, and he takes in several lungfuls of air before saying, โI havenโt lied to you, Mr Warner. She had to hear the truth. And if sheโd heard this from anyone else sheโd never forgive you. But at least nowโโhe coughsโโwith time, she might. Itโs your only chance at happiness.โ
โWhat?โ I drop my hand. Drop him. โSince when have you cared about my happiness?โ
Heโs quiet for too long, massaging his throat as he stares at me. Finally, he says, โYou think I donโt know what your father did to you? What he put you through?โ
And now I take a step back.
โYou think I donโt know your story, son? You think Iโd let you into my worldโoffer you sanctuary among my peopleโif I really thought you were going to hurt us?โ
Iโm breathing hard. Suddenly confused. Feeling exposed.
โYou donโt know anything about me,โ I say, feeling the lie even as I say it.
Castle smiles, but thereโs something wounded in it. โYouโre just a boy,โ he says quietly. โYouโre only nineteen years old, Mr Warner. And I think you forget that all the time. You have no perspective, no idea that youโve only barely lived. Thereโs still so much life ahead of you.โ He sighs. โI try to tell Kenji the same thing, but heโs like you. Stubborn,โ he says. โSo stubborn.โ
โIโmย nothingย like him.โ
โDid you know that youโre a year younger than him?โ
โAge is irrelevant. Nearly all my soldiers are older than me.โ Castle laughs.
โAll of you kids,โ he says, shaking his head. โYou suffer too much. You have these horrible, tragic histories. Volatile personalities. Iโve always wanted to help,โ he says. โIโve always wanted to fix that. Make this world a better place for you kids.โ
โWell, you can go save the world somewhere else,โ I say. โAnd feel free to babysit Kishimoto all you like. But Iโm not your responsibility. I donโt need your pity.โ
Castle only tilts his head at me. โYou will never escape my pity, Mr Warner.โ
My jaw clenches.
โYou boys,โ he says, his eyes distracted for a moment, โyou remind me so much of my own sons.โ
I pause. โYou have children?โ
โYes,โ he says. And I feel his sudden, breathtaking wave of pain wash over me as he says, โI did.โ
I take several unconscious steps backward, reeling from the rush of his shared emotions. I can only stare at him. Surprised. Curious.
Sorry. โHey.โ
At the sound of Nazeeraโs voice I spin around, startled. Sheโs with Haider, the two of them looking grave.
โWhat is it?โ I say.
โWe need to talk.โ She looks at Castle. โYour name is Castle, right?โ He nods.
โYeah, I know youโre wise to this business, Castle, so Iโm going to need you to get in on this, too.โ Nazeera whips her finger through the air to draw a circle around the four of us. โWe all need to talk.ย Now.โ
