Iโve seen a lot of strange things in my life, but I never thought Iโd have the pleasure of seeing Kishimoto shut his mouth for longer than five minutes. And yet, here we are. In any other situation, I might be relishing this moment. Sadly, Iโm unable to enjoy even this small pleasure.
His silence is unnerving.
Itโs been fifteen minutes since I finished sharing with him the same details I shared with Juliette earlier today, and he hasnโt said a word. Heโs sitting quietly in the corner, his head pressed against the wall, face in a frown, and he will not speak. He only stares, his eyes narrowed at some invisible point across the room.
Occasionally he sighs.
Weโve been here for almost two hours, just he and I. Talking. And of all the things I thought would happen today, I certainly did not think it would involve Juliette running away from me, and my befriending this idiot.
Oh, the best-laid plans.
Finally, after what feels like a tremendous amount of time, he speaks. โI canโt believe Castle didnโt tell me,โ is the first thing he says.
โWe all have our secrets.โ
He looks up, looks me in the eye. Itโs not pleasant. โYou have any more secrets I should know about?โ
โNone you should know about, no.โ
He laughs, but it sounds sad. โYou donโt even realize what youโre doing, do you?โ
โRealize what?โ
โYouโre setting yourself up for a lifetime of pain, bro. You canโt keep living like this. This,โ he says, pointing at my face, โthis old you? This messed-up dude who never talks and never smiles and never says anything nice and never allows anyone to really know himโyou canโt be this guy if you want to be in any kind of relationship.โ
I raise an eyebrow.
He shakes his head. โYou just canโt, man. You canโt be with someone and keep that many secrets from them.โ
โItโs never stopped me before.โ
Here, Kenji hesitates. His eyes widen, just a little. โWhat do you mean,
before?โ
โBefore,โ I say. โIn other relationships.โ
โSo, uh, youโve been in other relationships? Before Juliette?โ I tilt my head at him. โYou find that hard to believe.โ
โIโm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that you haveย feelings, so yeah, I find that hard to believe.โ
I clear my throat very quietly. Look away.
โSoโummโyou, uhโโhe laughs, nervouslyโโIโm sorry but, like, does Juliette know youโve been in other relationships? Because sheโs never mentioned anything about that, and I think that wouldโve been, like, I donโt know? Relevant?โ
I turn to face him. โNo.โ โNo, what?โ
โNo, she doesnโt know.โ โWhy not?โ
โSheโs never asked.โ
Kenji gapes at me. โIโm sorryโbut are youโI mean, are you actually as stupid as you sound? Or are you just messing with me right now?โ
โIโm nearly twenty years old,โ I say to him, irritated. โDo you really think it so strange that Iโve been with other women?โ
โNo,โ he says, โI, personally, donโt give a shit how many women youโve been with. What I think is strange is that you never told yourย girlfriendย that youโve been with other women. And to be perfectly honest itโs making me wonder whether your relationship wasnโt already headed to hell.โ
โYou have no idea what youโre talking about.โ My eyes flash. โIย loveย her. I never wouldโve done anything to hurt her.โ
โThey why would you lie to her?โ
โWhy do you keep pressing this? Who cares if Iโve been with other women? They meant nothing to meโโ
โYouโre messed up in the head, man.โ
I close my eyes, feeling suddenly exhausted. โOf all the things Iโve shared with you today,ย thisย is the issue youโre most interested in discussing?โ
โI just think itโs important, you know, if you and J ever try to repair this damage. You have to get your shit together.โ
โWhat do you mean,ย repair this damage?โ I say, my eyes flying open. โIโve already lost her. The damage is done.โ
At this, he looks surprised. โSo thatโs it? Youโre just going to walk away?
All this talk ofย I love herย blah blah and thatโs it?โ
โShe doesnโt want to be with me. I wonโt try to convince her sheโs wrong.โ
Kenji laughs. โDamn,โ he says. โI think you might need to get your bolts tightened.โ
โI beg your pardon?โ
He gets to his feet. โWhatever, bro. Your life. Your business. I liked you better when you were drunk on your meds.โ
โTell me something, Kishimotoโโ โWhat?โ
โWhy would I take relationship advice fromย you? What do you know about relationships aside from the fact that youโve never been in one?โ
A muscle twitches in his jaw. โWow.โ He nods, looks away. โYou know what?โ He gives me the finger. โDonโt pretend to know shit about me, man. You donโt know me.โ
โYou donโt know me, either.โ โI know that youโre anย idiot.โ
I suddenly, inexplicably, shut down.
My face pales. I feel unsteady. I donโt have any fight left in me today and I donโt have any interest in defending myself. Iย amย an idiot. I know who I am. The terrible things Iโve done. Itโs indefensible.
โYouโre right,โ I say, but I say it quietly. โAnd Iโm sure youโre right that thereโs a great deal I donโt know about you, too.โ
Something in Kenji seems to relax.
His eyes are sympathetic when he says, โI really donโt think you have to lose her. Not like this. Not over this. What you did was, likeโyeah, that shit was beyond horrible. Torturing her freaking sister? I mean. Yeah. Absolutely. Like, ten out of ten youโll probably go to hell for that.โ
I flinch.
โBut that happened before you knew her, right? Before all thisโโhe waves a handโโyou know, whatever it is that happened between you guys happened. And I know herโI know how she feels about you. There might be something to save. I wouldnโt lose hope just yet.โ
I almost crack a smile. I almost laugh. I donโt do either.
Instead, I say, โI remember Juliette telling me you gave a similar speech to Kent shortly after they broke up. That you spoke expressly against her wishes. You told Kent she still loved himโthat she wanted to get back together with him. You told him the exact opposite of what she felt. And she was furious.โ
โThat was different.โ Kenji frowns. โThat was just . . . like . . . you knowโ I was just trying to help? Because, like, logistically the situation was really complicatedโโ
โI appreciate your trying to help me,โ I say to him. โBut I will not beg her to return to me. Not if itโs not what she wants.โ I look away. โIn any case, sheโs always deserved to be with someone better. Maybe this is her chance.โ
โUh-huh.โ Kenji lifts an eyebrow. โSo if, like, tomorrow she hooks up with some other dude youโre just gonna shrug and be likeโI donโt know? Shake the guyโs hand? Take the happy couple out to dinner? Seriously?โ
Itโs just an idea.
A hypothetical scenario.
But the possibility blooms in my mind: Juliette smiling, laughing with another manโ
And then worse: his hands on her body, her eyes half closed with desireโ I feel suddenly like Iโve been punched in the stomach.
I close my eyes. Try to be steady.
But now I canโt stop picturing it: someone else knowing her the way Iโve known her, in the dark, in the quiet hours before dawnโher gentle kisses, her private moans of pleasureโ
I canโt do it. I canโt do it.
I canโt breathe.
โHeyโIโm sorryโit was just a questionโโ
โI think you should go,โ I say. I whisper the words. โYou should leave.โ โYeahโyou know what? Yeah. Excellent idea.โ He nods several times.
โNo problem.โ Still, he doesnโt move. โWhat?โ I snap at him.
โI just, uhโโhe rocks back and forth on his heelsโโI was wondering if you, uh, wanted any more of those medicine thingies though? Before I get out of here?โ
โGet.ย Out.โ
โAll right, man, no problem, yeah, Iโm just gonnaโโ Suddenly, someone is banging on my door.
I look up. Look around.
โShould I, umโโKenji is looking at me, a question in his eyesโโyou want me to get that?โ
I glare at him.
โYeah, Iโll get it,โ he says, and runs to answer the door. Itโs Delalieu, looking panicked.
It takes more than a concerted effort, but I manage to pull myself together. โYou couldnโt have called, Lieutenant? Isnโt that what our phones are for?โ โIโve been trying, sir, for over an hour, but no one would answer your
phone, sirโโ
I roll my neck and sigh, stretching the muscles even as they tense up again. My fault.
I disconnected my phone last night. I didnโt want any distractions while I was looking through my fatherโs files, and in the insanity of the morning I forgot to reconnect the line. I was beginning to wonder why Iโve had so much uninterrupted time to myself today.
โThatโs fine,โ I say, cutting him off. โWhatโs the problem?โ
โSir,โ he says, swallowing hard, โIโve tried to contact both you and Madam Supreme, but the two of you have been unavailable all day and, andโโ
โWhat is it, Lieutenant?โ
โThe supreme commander of Europe has sent her daughter, sir. She showed up unannounced a couple of hours ago, and Iโm afraid sheโs making quite a fuss about being ignored and I wasnโt sure what to d-doโโ
โWell, tell her to sit her ass down and wait,โ Kenji says, irritated. โWhat do you mean sheโs making aย fuss? Weโve got shit to do around here.โ
But Iโve gone unexpectedly solid. Like the blood in my veins has congealed.
โI meanโright?โ Kenji is saying, nudging me with his arm. โWhatโs the deal, man? Delalieu,โ he says, ignoring me. โJust tell her to chill. Weโll be down in a bit. This guy needs to shower and put his shirt on straight. Give her some lunch or something, okay? Weโll be right there.โ
โYes, sir,โ Delalieu says quietly. Heโs talking to Kenji, but flashes me another look of concern. I do not respond. Iโm not sure what to say.
Things are happening too quickly. Fission and fusion in all the wrong places, all at once.
Itโs only once Delalieu has gone and the door is closed that Kenji finally says, โWhat was that about? Why do you look so freaked?โ
And I unfreeze. Feeling returns slowly to my limbs. I turn around to face him.
โYou really think,โ I say carefully, โthat I need to tell Juliette about the other women Iโve been with?โ
โUh, yeah,โ he says, โbut what does that have to do withโโ I stare at him.
He stares back. His mouth drops open. โYou meanโwith this girlโthe one downstairsโ?โ
โThe children of the supreme commanders,โ I try to explain, squeezing my eyes shut as I do, โweโwe all basically grew up together. Iโve known most of these girls all my life.โ I look at him, attempting nonchalance. โIt was inevitable, really. It shouldnโt be surprising.โ
But Kenjiโs eyebrows are high. Heโs trying to fight a smile as he slaps me on the back, too hard. โOh, you are in for a world of pain, bro. A world. Of. Pain.โ
I shake my head. โThereโs no need to make this dramatic. Juliette doesnโt have to know. Sheโs not even speaking to me at the moment.โ
Kenji laughs. Looks at me with something that resembles pity. โYou donโt know anything about women, do you?โ When I donโt respond, he says, โTrust me, man, I bet you anything that wherever J is right nowโout there somewhereโshe already knows. And if she doesnโt, she will soon. Girls talk about everything.โ
โHow is that possible?โ He shrugs.
I sigh. Run a hand over my hair. โWell,โ I say. โDoes it really matter? Donโt we have more important things to contend with than the staid details of my previous relationships?โ
โNormally? Yes. But when the supreme commander of North America is
your ex-girlfriend, and sheโs already feeling really stressed about the fact that youโve been lying to her? And then all of a sudden your other ex-girlfriend shows up and Juliette doesnโt evenย knowย about her? And she realizes there are, like, a thousand other things youโve lied to her aboutโโ
โI never lied to her about any of this,โ I interject. โShe neverย askedโโ โโand then our very powerful supreme commander gets, like, super, super
pissed?โ Kenji shrugs. โI donโt know, man, I donโt see that ending well.โ I drop my head in my hands. Close my eyes. โI need to shower.โ โAnd . . . yeah, thatโs my cue to go.โ
I look up, suddenly. โIs there anything I can do?โ I say. โTo stop this from getting worse?โ
โOh, soย nowย youโre taking relationship advice from me?โ I fight the impulse to roll my eyes.
โI donโt really know man,โ Kenji says, and sighs. โI think, this time, you just have to deal with the consequences of your own stupidity.โ
I look away, bite back a laugh, and nod several times as I say, โGo to hell, Kishimoto.โ
โIโm right behind you, bro.โ He winks at me. Just once. And disappears.
