Chapter no 25 – WARNER

Restore Me (Shatter Me Book 4)

Iโ€™ve seen a lot of strange things in my life, but I never thought Iโ€™d have the pleasure of seeing Kishimoto shut his mouth for longer than five minutes. And yet, here we are. In any other situation, I might be relishing this moment. Sadly, Iโ€™m unable to enjoy even this small pleasure.

His silence is unnerving.

Itโ€™s been fifteen minutes since I finished sharing with him the same details I shared with Juliette earlier today, and he hasnโ€™t said a word. Heโ€™s sitting quietly in the corner, his head pressed against the wall, face in a frown, and he will not speak. He only stares, his eyes narrowed at some invisible point across the room.

Occasionally he sighs.

Weโ€™ve been here for almost two hours, just he and I. Talking. And of all the things I thought would happen today, I certainly did not think it would involve Juliette running away from me, and my befriending this idiot.

Oh, the best-laid plans.

Finally, after what feels like a tremendous amount of time, he speaks. โ€œI canโ€™t believe Castle didnโ€™t tell me,โ€ is the first thing he says.

โ€œWe all have our secrets.โ€

He looks up, looks me in the eye. Itโ€™s not pleasant. โ€œYou have any more secrets I should know about?โ€

โ€œNone you should know about, no.โ€

He laughs, but it sounds sad. โ€œYou donโ€™t even realize what youโ€™re doing, do you?โ€

โ€œRealize what?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re setting yourself up for a lifetime of pain, bro. You canโ€™t keep living like this. This,โ€ he says, pointing at my face, โ€œthis old you? This messed-up dude who never talks and never smiles and never says anything nice and never allows anyone to really know himโ€”you canโ€™t be this guy if you want to be in any kind of relationship.โ€

I raise an eyebrow.

He shakes his head. โ€œYou just canโ€™t, man. You canโ€™t be with someone and keep that many secrets from them.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s never stopped me before.โ€

Here, Kenji hesitates. His eyes widen, just a little. โ€œWhat do you mean,

before?โ€

โ€œBefore,โ€ I say. โ€œIn other relationships.โ€

โ€œSo, uh, youโ€™ve been in other relationships? Before Juliette?โ€ I tilt my head at him. โ€œYou find that hard to believe.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that you haveย feelings, so yeah, I find that hard to believe.โ€

I clear my throat very quietly. Look away.

โ€œSoโ€”ummโ€”you, uhโ€โ€”he laughs, nervouslyโ€”โ€œIโ€™m sorry but, like, does Juliette know youโ€™ve been in other relationships? Because sheโ€™s never mentioned anything about that, and I think that wouldโ€™ve been, like, I donโ€™t know? Relevant?โ€

I turn to face him. โ€œNo.โ€ โ€œNo, what?โ€

โ€œNo, she doesnโ€™t know.โ€ โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s never asked.โ€

Kenji gapes at me. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€”but are youโ€”I mean, are you actually as stupid as you sound? Or are you just messing with me right now?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m nearly twenty years old,โ€ I say to him, irritated. โ€œDo you really think it so strange that Iโ€™ve been with other women?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he says, โ€œI, personally, donโ€™t give a shit how many women youโ€™ve been with. What I think is strange is that you never told yourย girlfriendย that youโ€™ve been with other women. And to be perfectly honest itโ€™s making me wonder whether your relationship wasnโ€™t already headed to hell.โ€

โ€œYou have no idea what youโ€™re talking about.โ€ My eyes flash. โ€œIย loveย her. I never wouldโ€™ve done anything to hurt her.โ€

โ€œThey why would you lie to her?โ€

โ€œWhy do you keep pressing this? Who cares if Iโ€™ve been with other women? They meant nothing to meโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re messed up in the head, man.โ€

I close my eyes, feeling suddenly exhausted. โ€œOf all the things Iโ€™ve shared with you today,ย thisย is the issue youโ€™re most interested in discussing?โ€

โ€œI just think itโ€™s important, you know, if you and J ever try to repair this damage. You have to get your shit together.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean,ย repair this damage?โ€ I say, my eyes flying open. โ€œIโ€™ve already lost her. The damage is done.โ€

At this, he looks surprised. โ€œSo thatโ€™s it? Youโ€™re just going to walk away?

All this talk ofย I love herย blah blah and thatโ€™s it?โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t want to be with me. I wonโ€™t try to convince her sheโ€™s wrong.โ€

Kenji laughs. โ€œDamn,โ€ he says. โ€œI think you might need to get your bolts tightened.โ€

โ€œI beg your pardon?โ€

He gets to his feet. โ€œWhatever, bro. Your life. Your business. I liked you better when you were drunk on your meds.โ€

โ€œTell me something, Kishimotoโ€”โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhy would I take relationship advice fromย you? What do you know about relationships aside from the fact that youโ€™ve never been in one?โ€

A muscle twitches in his jaw. โ€œWow.โ€ He nods, looks away. โ€œYou know what?โ€ He gives me the finger. โ€œDonโ€™t pretend to know shit about me, man. You donโ€™t know me.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know me, either.โ€ โ€œI know that youโ€™re anย idiot.โ€

I suddenly, inexplicably, shut down.

My face pales. I feel unsteady. I donโ€™t have any fight left in me today and I donโ€™t have any interest in defending myself. Iย amย an idiot. I know who I am. The terrible things Iโ€™ve done. Itโ€™s indefensible.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I say, but I say it quietly. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sure youโ€™re right that thereโ€™s a great deal I donโ€™t know about you, too.โ€

Something in Kenji seems to relax.

His eyes are sympathetic when he says, โ€œI really donโ€™t think you have to lose her. Not like this. Not over this. What you did was, likeโ€”yeah, that shit was beyond horrible. Torturing her freaking sister? I mean. Yeah. Absolutely. Like, ten out of ten youโ€™ll probably go to hell for that.โ€

I flinch.

โ€œBut that happened before you knew her, right? Before all thisโ€โ€”he waves a handโ€”โ€œyou know, whatever it is that happened between you guys happened. And I know herโ€”I know how she feels about you. There might be something to save. I wouldnโ€™t lose hope just yet.โ€

I almost crack a smile. I almost laugh. I donโ€™t do either.

Instead, I say, โ€œI remember Juliette telling me you gave a similar speech to Kent shortly after they broke up. That you spoke expressly against her wishes. You told Kent she still loved himโ€”that she wanted to get back together with him. You told him the exact opposite of what she felt. And she was furious.โ€

โ€œThat was different.โ€ Kenji frowns. โ€œThat was just . . . like . . . you knowโ€” I was just trying to help? Because, like, logistically the situation was really complicatedโ€”โ€

โ€œI appreciate your trying to help me,โ€ I say to him. โ€œBut I will not beg her to return to me. Not if itโ€™s not what she wants.โ€ I look away. โ€œIn any case, sheโ€™s always deserved to be with someone better. Maybe this is her chance.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ Kenji lifts an eyebrow. โ€œSo if, like, tomorrow she hooks up with some other dude youโ€™re just gonna shrug and be likeโ€”I donโ€™t know? Shake the guyโ€™s hand? Take the happy couple out to dinner? Seriously?โ€

Itโ€™s just an idea.

A hypothetical scenario.

But the possibility blooms in my mind: Juliette smiling, laughing with another manโ€”

And then worse: his hands on her body, her eyes half closed with desireโ€” I feel suddenly like Iโ€™ve been punched in the stomach.

I close my eyes. Try to be steady.

But now I canโ€™t stop picturing it: someone else knowing her the way Iโ€™ve known her, in the dark, in the quiet hours before dawnโ€”her gentle kisses, her private moans of pleasureโ€”

I canโ€™t do it. I canโ€™t do it.

I canโ€™t breathe.

โ€œHeyโ€”Iโ€™m sorryโ€”it was just a questionโ€”โ€

โ€œI think you should go,โ€ I say. I whisper the words. โ€œYou should leave.โ€ โ€œYeahโ€”you know what? Yeah. Excellent idea.โ€ He nods several times.

โ€œNo problem.โ€ Still, he doesnโ€™t move. โ€œWhat?โ€ I snap at him.

โ€œI just, uhโ€โ€”he rocks back and forth on his heelsโ€”โ€œI was wondering if you, uh, wanted any more of those medicine thingies though? Before I get out of here?โ€

โ€œGet.ย Out.โ€

โ€œAll right, man, no problem, yeah, Iโ€™m just gonnaโ€”โ€ Suddenly, someone is banging on my door.

I look up. Look around.

โ€œShould I, umโ€โ€”Kenji is looking at me, a question in his eyesโ€”โ€œyou want me to get that?โ€

I glare at him.

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll get it,โ€ he says, and runs to answer the door. Itโ€™s Delalieu, looking panicked.

It takes more than a concerted effort, but I manage to pull myself together. โ€œYou couldnโ€™t have called, Lieutenant? Isnโ€™t that what our phones are for?โ€ โ€œIโ€™ve been trying, sir, for over an hour, but no one would answer your

phone, sirโ€”โ€

I roll my neck and sigh, stretching the muscles even as they tense up again. My fault.

I disconnected my phone last night. I didnโ€™t want any distractions while I was looking through my fatherโ€™s files, and in the insanity of the morning I forgot to reconnect the line. I was beginning to wonder why Iโ€™ve had so much uninterrupted time to myself today.

โ€œThatโ€™s fine,โ€ I say, cutting him off. โ€œWhatโ€™s the problem?โ€

โ€œSir,โ€ he says, swallowing hard, โ€œIโ€™ve tried to contact both you and Madam Supreme, but the two of you have been unavailable all day and, andโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat is it, Lieutenant?โ€

โ€œThe supreme commander of Europe has sent her daughter, sir. She showed up unannounced a couple of hours ago, and Iโ€™m afraid sheโ€™s making quite a fuss about being ignored and I wasnโ€™t sure what to d-doโ€”โ€

โ€œWell, tell her to sit her ass down and wait,โ€ Kenji says, irritated. โ€œWhat do you mean sheโ€™s making aย fuss? Weโ€™ve got shit to do around here.โ€

But Iโ€™ve gone unexpectedly solid. Like the blood in my veins has congealed.

โ€œI meanโ€”right?โ€ Kenji is saying, nudging me with his arm. โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal, man? Delalieu,โ€ he says, ignoring me. โ€œJust tell her to chill. Weโ€™ll be down in a bit. This guy needs to shower and put his shirt on straight. Give her some lunch or something, okay? Weโ€™ll be right there.โ€

โ€œYes, sir,โ€ Delalieu says quietly. Heโ€™s talking to Kenji, but flashes me another look of concern. I do not respond. Iโ€™m not sure what to say.

Things are happening too quickly. Fission and fusion in all the wrong places, all at once.

Itโ€™s only once Delalieu has gone and the door is closed that Kenji finally says, โ€œWhat was that about? Why do you look so freaked?โ€

And I unfreeze. Feeling returns slowly to my limbs. I turn around to face him.

โ€œYou really think,โ€ I say carefully, โ€œthat I need to tell Juliette about the other women Iโ€™ve been with?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah,โ€ he says, โ€œbut what does that have to do withโ€”โ€ I stare at him.

He stares back. His mouth drops open. โ€œYou meanโ€”with this girlโ€”the one downstairsโ€”?โ€

โ€œThe children of the supreme commanders,โ€ I try to explain, squeezing my eyes shut as I do, โ€œweโ€”we all basically grew up together. Iโ€™ve known most of these girls all my life.โ€ I look at him, attempting nonchalance. โ€œIt was inevitable, really. It shouldnโ€™t be surprising.โ€

But Kenjiโ€™s eyebrows are high. Heโ€™s trying to fight a smile as he slaps me on the back, too hard. โ€œOh, you are in for a world of pain, bro. A world. Of. Pain.โ€

I shake my head. โ€œThereโ€™s no need to make this dramatic. Juliette doesnโ€™t have to know. Sheโ€™s not even speaking to me at the moment.โ€

Kenji laughs. Looks at me with something that resembles pity. โ€œYou donโ€™t know anything about women, do you?โ€ When I donโ€™t respond, he says, โ€œTrust me, man, I bet you anything that wherever J is right nowโ€”out there somewhereโ€”she already knows. And if she doesnโ€™t, she will soon. Girls talk about everything.โ€

โ€œHow is that possible?โ€ He shrugs.

I sigh. Run a hand over my hair. โ€œWell,โ€ I say. โ€œDoes it really matter? Donโ€™t we have more important things to contend with than the staid details of my previous relationships?โ€

โ€œNormally? Yes. But when the supreme commander of North America is

your ex-girlfriend, and sheโ€™s already feeling really stressed about the fact that youโ€™ve been lying to her? And then all of a sudden your other ex-girlfriend shows up and Juliette doesnโ€™t evenย knowย about her? And she realizes there are, like, a thousand other things youโ€™ve lied to her aboutโ€”โ€

โ€œI never lied to her about any of this,โ€ I interject. โ€œShe neverย askedโ€”โ€ โ€œโ€”and then our very powerful supreme commander gets, like, super, super

pissed?โ€ Kenji shrugs. โ€œI donโ€™t know, man, I donโ€™t see that ending well.โ€ I drop my head in my hands. Close my eyes. โ€œI need to shower.โ€ โ€œAnd . . . yeah, thatโ€™s my cue to go.โ€

I look up, suddenly. โ€œIs there anything I can do?โ€ I say. โ€œTo stop this from getting worse?โ€

โ€œOh, soย nowย youโ€™re taking relationship advice from me?โ€ I fight the impulse to roll my eyes.

โ€œI donโ€™t really know man,โ€ Kenji says, and sighs. โ€œI think, this time, you just have to deal with the consequences of your own stupidity.โ€

I look away, bite back a laugh, and nod several times as I say, โ€œGo to hell, Kishimoto.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m right behind you, bro.โ€ He winks at me. Just once. And disappears.
