Chapter no 36

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Grayson and I found Zara in the greenhouse. She wore white gardening gloves that fit her hands like a second skin and held a pair of shears so sharp they probably could have cut through bone.

โ€œTo what do I owe this pleasure?โ€ Zara angled her head toward us, the look in her eyes coolly advertising the fact that she was a Hawthorne and, by definition, missed nothing. โ€œOut with it, both of you. You want something.โ€

โ€œWe just want to talk,โ€ Grayson said evenly.

Zara ran her finger lightly over a thorn. โ€œNo Hawthorne has ever just wanted to talk.โ€

Grayson didnโ€™t argue that point. โ€œYour brother Toby has been abducted,โ€ he said, with that uncanny ability to say things thatย matteredย as if they were simply facts. โ€œThereโ€™s been no demand for ransom, but weโ€™ve received several communications from his kidnapper.โ€

โ€œIs Toby alright?โ€ Zara took a step toward Oren. โ€œJohnโ€” is my brother alright?โ€

He gently met her gaze and gave her what he could. โ€œHeโ€™s alive.โ€

โ€œAnd you havenโ€™t found him yet?โ€ Zara demanded. Her tone was pure ice. I could see the exact moment she remembered who she was talking to and realized that ifย Orenย couldnโ€™t find Toby, there was a very good chance he couldnโ€™t be found.

โ€œWe think there might be a family connection between Toby and the person who took him,โ€ I said.

Zaraโ€™s expression wavered, like ripples across the water.

โ€œIf you came here to make accusations, I suggest you stop beating around the bush and make them.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not here to accuse you of anything,โ€ Grayson said with absolute, unerring calm. โ€œWe need to ask you about your first husband.โ€

โ€œChristopher?โ€ Zara arched a brow. โ€œI assure you, you donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œTobyโ€™s abductor has been sending clues,โ€ I said, rushing the words. โ€œThe most recent involves the biblical story of the prodigal son.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re looking,โ€ Grayson stated, โ€œfor someone who viewed Tobias Hawthorne as a father and felt as though he got a raw deal. Tell us about Christopher.โ€

โ€œHe was everything that was expected of me.โ€ Zara lifted the shears to clip a white rose.ย Off with its head.ย โ€œWealthy family, politically connected, charming.โ€

Wealth, Alisa had said.ย Power. Connections.

Zara set the white rose in a black basket, then clipped three more. โ€œWhen I filed for divorce, Chris went to my father and played the dutiful son, fully expecting the old man to talk some sense into me.โ€

It was Graysonโ€™s turn now to arch a brow. โ€œHow thoroughly was he destroyed?โ€

Zara smiled. โ€œI assure you, the divorce was civil.โ€ In other words:ย utterly. โ€œBut it hardly matters. Christopher died in a boating accident not long after everything was finalized.โ€

No, I thought, a visceral, knee-jerk reaction.ย Not another dead end.ย โ€œWhat about his family?โ€ I asked, unwilling to let this go.

โ€œHe was an only child, and his parents are likewise deceased.โ€

I felt like the mouse Iโ€™d imagined earlier, like Iโ€™d been made to think I had a chance when I never really had. But I couldnโ€™t give up. โ€œIs it possible that your father had another son?โ€ I asked, going back to that possibility.

โ€œBesides Toby?โ€

โ€œA pretermitted heir whoย didnโ€™tย come crawling out of the woodwork after the will was read?โ€ Zara responded archly. โ€œWith billions at stake? Hardly likely.โ€

โ€œThen what are we missing?โ€ I asked, more desperation in my tone than I wanted to admit.

Zara considered the question. โ€œMy father liked to say that our minds have a way of tricking us into choosing between two options when there are really seven. The Hawthorne gift has always been seeing all seven.โ€

โ€œIdentify the assumptions implicit in your own logic,โ€ Grayson said, clearly citing a dictate heโ€™d been taught, โ€œthen negate them.โ€

I thought about that. What assumptions had we made?ย That Toby is the prodigal son, Tobias the father.ย It was the obvious interpretation, given Tobyโ€™s history, but that was the thing about riddles. The answerย wasnโ€™tย obvious.

And on that first phone call, Tobyโ€™s captor had referred to himself as anย old man.

โ€œWhat happens if we take Toby out of the story?โ€ I asked Grayson. โ€œIf your grandfatherย isnโ€™tย the father in the parable?โ€ My heart drummed in my chest. โ€œWhat if heโ€™s one of the sons?โ€

Grayson looked to his aunt. โ€œDid the old man ever talk to you about his family? His parents?โ€

โ€œMy father liked to say that he didnโ€™t have a family, that he came from nothing.โ€

โ€œThat was what heย likedย to say,โ€ Grayson confirmed.

In my mind, all I could picture were the three chess pieces. If Tobias Hawthorne was the bishop or the knightโ€ฆ who the hell was the king?
