Chapter no 32

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

Iย texted Alisa first. Handling scandals like this was part of her job. Breaking the news to the boys and Eve was harder. Forcing my mouth to say the words felt like breaking my ankle.ย A moment of wrongness. A sickย crunch. The shock.ย Then the shock wore off.

โ€œThis is bullshit,โ€ Nash bit out. He took a breath, then turned discerning eyes on his brothers. โ€œJamie? Gray?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€ Graysonโ€™s face was like stone.

โ€œAnd in keeping with my general superiority in our sibling relationship,โ€ Jameson added with a sardonic smile that was just a little too sharp, โ€œI am better than fine.โ€

This was Lukeโ€™s doing. It had to be.

Eve pulled the gossip site up on her phone. She stared at it. Her own picture. Emilyโ€™s.

I flashed back to that moment in Tobyโ€™s wing when sheโ€™d told me that she didnโ€™t look like anyone in her family.

โ€œWhy does it say you killed her?โ€ Eve asked, her voice reedy. She didnโ€™t look up from her phone, but I knew who she was addressing that question to.

โ€œBecause,โ€ Grayson replied, his voice blade-edged, โ€œwe did.โ€

โ€œLike hell you did,โ€ Nash swore. He looked around at the rest of us. โ€œWhatโ€™s the rule about fightinโ€™ dirty?โ€ he asked. No one answered. โ€œGray? Jamie?โ€ He swiveled his gaze to me.

โ€œThereโ€™s no such thing as fighting dirty,โ€ I said lowly, โ€œif you win.โ€ I wanted to win. I wanted to get Toby back. I wanted to take the bastard who had kidnapped himโ€”the

bastard who had just done this to Jameson and Grayson and Eveโ€”down.

โ€œFighting dirty?โ€ Eve asked, finally looking up from the website. โ€œIs that what you call this? My face is going to be everywhere.โ€

This was exactly what Tobyย hadnโ€™tย wanted. โ€œGlitter cannon,โ€ Xander said.

I shot him a look. This really wasnโ€™t the time for levityโ€” or sparkles.

โ€œThis right here is a glitter cannon,โ€ Xander reiterated. โ€œDetonate one in the middle of a game, and it makes a huge mess. The kind that gets everywhere, sticks to everything.โ€

Graysonโ€™s expression hardened. โ€œAnd runs down the clock while you clean it up.โ€

โ€œWhile youย tryย to clean it up,โ€ Libby said gently. Sheโ€™d been quiet in all of this, but my sister had empathy in spades, and she didnโ€™t have to know Grayson or Jameson or even Eve as well as I did to know how hard theyโ€™d been hit.

โ€œSome things donโ€™t clean easy,โ€ Nash agreed in a slow, steady drawl, his eyes finding Libbyโ€™s like it was the most natural thing in the world. โ€œYouโ€™ll think youโ€™ve finally got it all. Everythingโ€™s fine. And then five years laterโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThereโ€™s still glitter in Graysonโ€™s bathroom,โ€ Xander finished. I got the feeling that wasnโ€™t a metaphor.

โ€œLuke did this,โ€ I said. โ€œHe set this up. He detonated the blast. He wants us distracted.โ€ย He wants to run down the clock. He wants us to lose.

Tick tock.

Eve turned her phone off and tossed it roughly onto the desk. โ€œScrew the glitter,โ€ she said. โ€œI donโ€™t want to figure out what happens to Toby if that timer hits zero.โ€

None of us did.

Xander played the conversation with Luke back again, and we got to work.
