Iย texted Alisa first. Handling scandals like this was part of her job. Breaking the news to the boys and Eve was harder. Forcing my mouth to say the words felt like breaking my ankle.ย A moment of wrongness. A sickย crunch. The shock.ย Then the shock wore off.
โThis is bullshit,โ Nash bit out. He took a breath, then turned discerning eyes on his brothers. โJamie? Gray?โ
โIโm fine.โ Graysonโs face was like stone.
โAnd in keeping with my general superiority in our sibling relationship,โ Jameson added with a sardonic smile that was just a little too sharp, โI am better than fine.โ
This was Lukeโs doing. It had to be.
Eve pulled the gossip site up on her phone. She stared at it. Her own picture. Emilyโs.
I flashed back to that moment in Tobyโs wing when sheโd told me that she didnโt look like anyone in her family.
โWhy does it say you killed her?โ Eve asked, her voice reedy. She didnโt look up from her phone, but I knew who she was addressing that question to.
โBecause,โ Grayson replied, his voice blade-edged, โwe did.โ
โLike hell you did,โ Nash swore. He looked around at the rest of us. โWhatโs the rule about fightinโ dirty?โ he asked. No one answered. โGray? Jamie?โ He swiveled his gaze to me.
โThereโs no such thing as fighting dirty,โ I said lowly, โif you win.โ I wanted to win. I wanted to get Toby back. I wanted to take the bastard who had kidnapped himโthe
bastard who had just done this to Jameson and Grayson and Eveโdown.
โFighting dirty?โ Eve asked, finally looking up from the website. โIs that what you call this? My face is going to be everywhere.โ
This was exactly what Tobyย hadnโtย wanted. โGlitter cannon,โ Xander said.
I shot him a look. This really wasnโt the time for levityโ or sparkles.
โThis right here is a glitter cannon,โ Xander reiterated. โDetonate one in the middle of a game, and it makes a huge mess. The kind that gets everywhere, sticks to everything.โ
Graysonโs expression hardened. โAnd runs down the clock while you clean it up.โ
โWhile youย tryย to clean it up,โ Libby said gently. Sheโd been quiet in all of this, but my sister had empathy in spades, and she didnโt have to know Grayson or Jameson or even Eve as well as I did to know how hard theyโd been hit.
โSome things donโt clean easy,โ Nash agreed in a slow, steady drawl, his eyes finding Libbyโs like it was the most natural thing in the world. โYouโll think youโve finally got it all. Everythingโs fine. And then five years laterโฆโ
โThereโs still glitter in Graysonโs bathroom,โ Xander finished. I got the feeling that wasnโt a metaphor.
โLuke did this,โ I said. โHe set this up. He detonated the blast. He wants us distracted.โย He wants to run down the clock. He wants us to lose.
Tick tock.
Eve turned her phone off and tossed it roughly onto the desk. โScrew the glitter,โ she said. โI donโt want to figure out what happens to Toby if that timer hits zero.โ
None of us did.
Xander played the conversation with Luke back again, and we got to work.
