โWhat did you say to him?โ I ask as soon as the elevator doors close.
Warner takes a deep breath. He says nothing. โYouโre not going to tell me?โ
โIโd rather not,โ he says quietly. I take his hand. Squeeze.
The elevator doors open.
โWill this be weird for you?โ Warner asks. He looks surprised by his own question, as though he canโt believe heโs even asking it.
โWill what be weird?โ
โThat Kent and I are โฆ brothers.โ
โNo,โ I say to him. โIโve known for a while now. It doesnโt change anything for me.โ
โThatโs good,โ he says quietly. Iโm nodding, confused.
Weโve moved into the bedroom. Weโre sitting on the bed now. โYou wouldnโt mind, then?โ Warner asks.
Iโm still confused.
โIf he and I,โ Warner says, โspent some time together?โ
โWhat?โ I ask, unable to hide my disbelief. โNo,โ I say quickly. โNo, of course notโI think that would be amazing.โ
Warnerโs eyes are on the wall.
โSo โฆ you want to spend time with him?โ Iโm trying so hard to give Warner space, and I donโt want to pry, but I just canโt help myself.
โI would like to know my own brother, yes.โ โAnd James?โ I ask.
Warner laughs a little. โYes. And James.โ โSo youโre โฆ happy about this?โ
He doesnโt answer right away. โI am not unhappy.โ
I climb into his lap. Cup his face in my hands, tilting his chin up so I can see his eyes. Iโm smiling a stupid smile. โI think thatโs so wonderful,โ I tell him.
โDo you?โ He grins. โHow interesting.โ
I nod. Over and over again. And I kiss him once, very softly.
Warner closes his eyes. Smiles slightly, his cheek dimpled on one side.
He looks thoughtful now. โHow strange this has all become.โ I feel like I might die of happiness.
Warner picks me up off his lap, lays me back on the bed. Crawls over me, on top of me. โAnd why are you so thrilled?โ he asks, trying not to laugh. โYouโre practically buoyant.โ
โI want you to be happy,โ I tell him, my eyes searching his. โI want you to have a family. I want you to be surrounded by people who care about you,โ I say. โYou deserve that.โ
โI have you,โ he says, resting his forehead against mine. His eyes shut. โYou should have more than me.โ
โNo,โ he whispers. He shakes his head. His nose grazes mine. โYes.โ
โWhat about you? And your parents?โ he asks me. โDo you ever want to find them?โ
โNo,โ I say quietly. โThey were never parents to me. Besides, I have my friends.โ
โAnd me,โ he says.
โYou are my friend,โ I tell him.
โBut not your best friend. Kenji is your best friend.โ
I try so hard not to laugh at the jealousy in his voice. โYes, but youโre myย favoriteย friend.โ
Warner leans in, bypasses my lips. โGood,โ he whispers, kissing my neck. โNow flip over,โ he says. โOn your stomach.โ
I stare at him.
โPlease,โ he says. Smiles. I do. Very slowly.
โWhat are you doing?โ I whisper, turning to look at him. He gentles my body back down.
โI want you to know,โ he says, pulling on the zipper holding this suit together, โhow much I value your friendship.โ The seam is coming apart and my skin is now open to the elements; I bite back a shiver.
The zipper stops at the base of my spine.
โBut Iโd like you to reconsider my title,โ Warner says. He drops a soft kiss in the middle of my back. Runs his hands up my skin and pushes the sleeves off my shoulders, leaving kisses against my shoulder blades, the back of my neck. โBecause my friendship,โ he whispers, โcomes with so many more benefits than Kenji could ever offer.โ
I canโt breathe. Canโt.
โDonโt you think?โ Warner asks. โYes,โ I say too quickly. โYes.โ
And then Iโm spinning, lost in sensations, and wondering how soon weโll be losing these moments, and wondering how long itโll be before weโll have them again.
I donโt know where weโre going, he and I, but I know I want to get there. We are hours and minutes reaching for the same second, holding hands as we spin forward into new days and the promise of something better.
But though weโll know forward and weโve known backward, we will never know the present. This moment and the next one and even the one that wouldโve been right now are gone, already passed, and all weโre left with are these tired bodies, the only proof that weโve lived through time and survived it.
Itโll be worth it, though, in the end. Fighting for a lifetime of this.
