Weโre all sitting around again.
Talking. Discussing. Thinking and planning. James is snoring soundly in the corner.
Weโre all caught somewhere between being excited and being terrified, and yet, somehow, weโre mostly excited. This is, after all, what everyone at Omega Point had always been planning; theyโd joined Castle hoping it would one day come to this.
A chance to defeat The Reestablishment.
Theyโve all been training for this. Even Adam, who somehow convinced himself to stand with us, has been a soldier. Kenji, a soldier. All of them in peak physical condition. They are all fighters; even Alia, whose quiet shell contains so much. I couldnโt have asked for a more solid group of individuals.
โSo when do you think heโll be here?โ Ian is asking. โTomorrow?โ โMaybe,โ Kenji says. โBut I donโt think itโll take him more than two
days.โ
โI thought he was on a ship? In the middle of the ocean?โ Lily asks. โHow is he supposed to get here in two days?โ
โI donโt think itโs the kind of ship youโre thinking of,โ Castle says to her. โI imagine he is on an army vessel; one equipped with a landing strip. If he calls for a jet, they will deliver him to us.โ
โWow.โ Brendan leans back, rests on his hands. โThis is really happening, then?ย The supreme commander of The Reestablishment. Winston and I never saw him, not once, even though his men were holding us captive.โ He shakes his head. Glances at me. โWhat does he look like?โ
โHeโs extremely handsome,โ I say. Lily laughs out loud.
โIโm serious,โ I say to her. โItโs almost sick how beautiful he is.โ โReally?โ Winston is staring at me, eyes wide.
Kenji nods. โVery pretty guy.โ Lily is gawking.
โAnd you said his name is Anderson?โ Alia asks. I nod.
โThatโs strange,โ Lily says. โI always thought Warnerโs last name wasย Warner, not Anderson.โ She thinks for a second. โSo his name is Warner Anderson?โ
โNo,โ I say to her. โYouโre right. Warner is his last nameโbut not his dadโs. He took his momโs last name,โ I say. โHe didnโt want to be associated with his father.โ
Adam snorts.
We all look at him.
โSo whatโs Warnerโs first name?โ Ian asks. โDo you know?โ I nod.
โAnd?โ Winston asks. โYouโre not going to tell us?โ
โAsk him yourself,โ I say. โIf he wants to tell you, Iโm sure he will.โ โYeah, thatโs not going to happen,โ Winston says. โIโm not asking that
guy personal questions.โ I try not to laugh.
โSoโdo you know Andersonโs first name?โ Ian asks. โOr is that a secret, too? I mean this whole thing is really weird, right? That theyโd be so secretive about their names?โ
โOh,โ I say, caught off guard. โIโm not sure. Thereโs a lot of power in a name, I guess. And no,โ I say, shaking my head. โI donโt actually know Andersonโs first name. I never asked.โ
โYouโre not missing anything,โ Adam says, irritated. โItโs a stupid name.โ Heโs staring at his shoes. โHis name is Paris.โ
โHow did you know that?โ
I spin around and find Warner standing just outside the open elevator. Itโs still pinging softly, only just now signaling his arrival. The doors close behind him. Heโs staring at Adam in shock.
Adam blinks fast at Warner and then at us, unsure what to do.
โHow did you know that?โ Warner demands again. He walks right through our group and grabs Adam by the shirt, moving so quickly Adam has no time to react.
He pins him against the wall.
Iโve never heard Warner raise his voice like this before. Never seen him so angry. โWho do you answer to, soldier?โ he shouts. โWho is your commander?โ
โI donโt know what youโre talking about!โ Adam yells back. He tries breaking away and Warner grabs him with both fists, shoving him harder against the wall.
Iโm beginning to panic.
โHow long have you been working for him?โ Warner shouts again. โHow long have you been infiltrating my baseโโ
I jump to my feet. Kenji is close behind. โWarner,โ I say, โplease, heโs not a spyโโ
โThereโs no way he could know something like that,โ Warner says to me, still looking at Adam. โNot unless he is a member of the Supreme Guard, where even then it would be questionable. A foot soldier would never have that kind of informationโโ
โIโm not a Supreme Soldier,โ Adam tries to say, โI swearโโ
โLiar,โ Warner barks, shoving him harder against the wall. Adamโs shirt is starting to tear. โWhy were you sent here? What is your mission? Has he sent you to kill me?โ
โWarner,โ I call again, pleading this time, running forward until Iโm in his line of vision. โPleaseโheโs not working for the supreme, I promiseโโ
โHow can you know?โ Warner finally glances at me, just for a second. โIโm telling you,โ he says, โitโs impossible for him to know thisโโ
โHeโs yourย brother,โ I finally choke out. โPlease. Heโs your brother. You have the same father.โ
Warner goes rigid. He turns to me. โWhat?โ he breathes.
โItโs true,โ I tell him, feeling so heartbroken as I do. โAnd I know you can tell Iโm not lying.โ I shake my head. โHeโs your brother. Your father was leading a double life. He abandoned Adam and James a long time ago. After Adamโs mom died.โ
Warner drops Adam to the floor.
โNo,โ Warner says. Heโs not even blinking. Just staring. Hands shaking. I turn to look at Adam, eyes tight with emotion. โTell him,โ I say,
desperate now. โTell him the truth.โ Adam says nothing.
โDammit, Adam,ย tellย him!โ
โYou knew, all this time?โ Warner asks, turning to face me. โYou knew this and yet you said nothing?โ
โI wanted toโI really, really wanted to, but I didnโt think it was my placeโโ
โNo,โ he says, cutting me off. Heโs shaking his head. โNo, this doesnโt make any sense. Howโhow is that even possible?โ He looks up, looks around. โThat doesnโtโโ
He stops. Looks at Adam.
โTell me the truth,โ he says. He walks up to Adam again, looking like he might shake him. โTell me! I have a right to know!โ
And every moment in the world drops dead just then, because they woke up and realized theyโd never be as important as this one.
โItโs true,โ Adam says.
Two words to change the world.
Warner steps back, hand caught in his hair. Heโs rubbing his eyes, his forehead, running his hand down his mouth, his neck. Heโs breathing so hard. โHow?โ he finally asks.
And then. And then. The truth.
Little by little. Itโs pulled out of Adam. One word at a time. And the rest of us are looking on, and James is still sleeping, and I go silent as these two brothers have the hardest conversation Iโve ever had to watch.
