SETH DOESNโT SAYย a word to me or give me any indication of whatโs wrong as I march behind him to his office. Seth is the only employee at this branch who gets his own office. It used to bother me, but since I spend a lot of time out of the office, I try not to get too upset about working in a cube. But eventually, Iโll have to relocate to another company where I can get a decent workspace.
โSit,โ Seth says in a clipped tone.
He shuts the door behind me. He always used to shut the door like that when we were about to fool around, and like Pavlovโs dogs, I find myself getting a little turned on, despite everything. Itโs completely inappropriate, given how my world is crumbling around me right now, but Seth just really does it for me. Too bad the circumstances didnโt work out between us.
I settle down into one of the chairs in front of his desk. โWhatโs going on?โ
Seth sits in his own leather chair. His hands are clasped into fists. โThat detective paid me a visit this morning.โ
โOh.โ
โOh?โ His eyebrows shoot up. โIs that all you have to say?โ
I shake my head. I donโt know what heโs all worked up about.ย Heโsย not the one lying about my alibi.
โIs there anything you want to tell me, Natalie?โ
Seth always calls me Nat. The fact that heโs repeatedly calling me Natalie makes me think heโs pissed off at me. That and the way his face is red and his knuckles are white.
โNoโฆโ
He slams his palms flat on the desk. โSantoro said you stole money from the company. Dawn knew all about it, apparently.โ
All the air seems to leave my body. I open my mouth, but no words come out. โI didnโtโฆโ I manage.
โDawn wrote all about it in an email, apparently,โ he continues like I hadnโt spoken. โShe was about to confront you about it. About the money you stole from meโฆโ
โNo,โ I breathe. โI didnโt steal anythingโฆโ
โThat huge house you have in Bostonโฆโ He shakes his head. โI never understood how you were able to afford it. Or all those fancy labels on your clothingโฆ those insanely expensive shoesโฆโ
โSethโฆโ
โI always noticed how flirty you were with the last accountant we had,โ he muses. โNow I finally get it. And of course, it explains why you were so nice toย me.โ
โSeth!โ My eyes bulge out. โYou canโt possibly think that I would ever
โโ
His eyes are filled with rage. โI know what youโre like, Natalie. Iโve
seen you bullshit customers. Iโve seen the way you do whatever you have to do to get what you want. I justโฆ I never thoughtโฆโ He heaves a breath. โI never thought youโd mess withย meย to get what you want.โ
โBecause I wouldnโt!โ I cry. โSeth, pleaseโฆโ
He holds up his hand. โI donโt want to hear it. Youโre on unpaid suspension. Since we donโt have an accountant right now, Iโll go through the accounts myself today. Figure out how much you ripped us off for.โ
โI didnโt rip you off!โ My eyes are swimming with tears. Iโve managed not to cry through this whole ordeal, but Iโve never seen Seth look at me this way. Heโs always been kind to meโI could always count on that. โI swear to you, I wouldnโt do that.โ
โYeah, right.โ He turns away from me, his eyes focused on his computer screen. โWeโre done here. Get your stuff and go.โ
โSethโฆโ
โNow, Natalie,โ he says through his teeth. โOr do I need to call security?โ
I know Seth really well. We were seeing each other for over a year before I called it quits. Thereโs nothing I can say to change his mind. He is pissed off at me. And on top of that, heโs hurt. He thinks I played him. He believes every word the detective told him.
This is far from over.
