Chapter no 39 – NATALIE

The Coworker

SETH DOESNโ€™T SAYย a word to me or give me any indication of whatโ€™s wrong as I march behind him to his office. Seth is the only employee at this branch who gets his own office. It used to bother me, but since I spend a lot of time out of the office, I try not to get too upset about working in a cube. But eventually, Iโ€™ll have to relocate to another company where I can get a decent workspace.

โ€œSit,โ€ Seth says in a clipped tone.

He shuts the door behind me. He always used to shut the door like that when we were about to fool around, and like Pavlovโ€™s dogs, I find myself getting a little turned on, despite everything. Itโ€™s completely inappropriate, given how my world is crumbling around me right now, but Seth just really does it for me. Too bad the circumstances didnโ€™t work out between us.

I settle down into one of the chairs in front of his desk. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€

Seth sits in his own leather chair. His hands are clasped into fists. โ€œThat detective paid me a visit this morning.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ His eyebrows shoot up. โ€œIs that all you have to say?โ€

I shake my head. I donโ€™t know what heโ€™s all worked up about.ย Heโ€™sย not the one lying about my alibi.

โ€œIs there anything you want to tell me, Natalie?โ€

Seth always calls me Nat. The fact that heโ€™s repeatedly calling me Natalie makes me think heโ€™s pissed off at me. That and the way his face is red and his knuckles are white.

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€

He slams his palms flat on the desk. โ€œSantoro said you stole money from the company. Dawn knew all about it, apparently.โ€

All the air seems to leave my body. I open my mouth, but no words come out. โ€œI didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ I manage.

โ€œDawn wrote all about it in an email, apparently,โ€ he continues like I hadnโ€™t spoken. โ€œShe was about to confront you about it. About the money you stole from meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I breathe. โ€œI didnโ€™t steal anythingโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThat huge house you have in Bostonโ€ฆโ€ He shakes his head. โ€œI never understood how you were able to afford it. Or all those fancy labels on your clothingโ€ฆ those insanely expensive shoesโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSethโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI always noticed how flirty you were with the last accountant we had,โ€ he muses. โ€œNow I finally get it. And of course, it explains why you were so nice toย me.โ€

โ€œSeth!โ€ My eyes bulge out. โ€œYou canโ€™t possibly think that I would ever

โ€”โ€

His eyes are filled with rage. โ€œI know what youโ€™re like, Natalie. Iโ€™ve

seen you bullshit customers. Iโ€™ve seen the way you do whatever you have to do to get what you want. I justโ€ฆ I never thoughtโ€ฆโ€ He heaves a breath. โ€œI never thought youโ€™d mess withย meย to get what you want.โ€

โ€œBecause I wouldnโ€™t!โ€ I cry. โ€œSeth, pleaseโ€ฆโ€

He holds up his hand. โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear it. Youโ€™re on unpaid suspension. Since we donโ€™t have an accountant right now, Iโ€™ll go through the accounts myself today. Figure out how much you ripped us off for.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t rip you off!โ€ My eyes are swimming with tears. Iโ€™ve managed not to cry through this whole ordeal, but Iโ€™ve never seen Seth look at me this way. Heโ€™s always been kind to meโ€”I could always count on that. โ€œI swear to you, I wouldnโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œYeah, right.โ€ He turns away from me, his eyes focused on his computer screen. โ€œWeโ€™re done here. Get your stuff and go.โ€

โ€œSethโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNow, Natalie,โ€ he says through his teeth. โ€œOr do I need to call security?โ€

I know Seth really well. We were seeing each other for over a year before I called it quits. Thereโ€™s nothing I can say to change his mind. He is pissed off at me. And on top of that, heโ€™s hurt. He thinks I played him. He believes every word the detective told him.

This is far from over.
