Chapter no 57

The Coworker

โ€œSTAY IN THE CAR,โ€ย Seth says. โ€œLock the doors.โ€

He means well. Caleb isnโ€™t who we thought he was, and heโ€™s certainly been lying to me. But at the same time, I donโ€™t think heโ€™s dangerous. In my heart, I donโ€™t believe he killed Dawn. I donโ€™t think heโ€™s capable of it. Even with all the lies, I can tell heโ€™s not the sort of person who would do something like that.

And even if he is, heโ€™s not going to kill me right in front of Seth, right on the street. If nothing else, heโ€™s smarter than that. Heโ€™s certainly not impulsive. Whatever heโ€™s done was planned over monthsโ€”maybeย years.

So I unlock the car doors and get out, despite Sethโ€™s protests. Caleb is walking toward me but thereโ€™s nothing threatening about him. He doesnโ€™t have a weapon. This is going to be okay. I need to know whatโ€™s going on. I need the truth.

โ€œHey, asshole!โ€ Seth yells. Heโ€™s getting out of the car just behind me. โ€œYou need to stay away from Natalie.โ€

Caleb is about three feet away from me now. He looks up at Seth, shakes his head, and looks back down at me. I notice now that his brows are knitted together. โ€œNatalie,โ€ he says in a shaky voice. โ€œWe need to talk.โ€

โ€œDamn straight,โ€ I say. โ€œYouโ€™ve been lying to me all along. You planted that hair and blood in my car, didnโ€™t you?โ€

Caleb looks taken aback. He didnโ€™t expect me to say that. He stands there for a moment, not sure how to respond.

โ€œWell?โ€ I prompt him.

โ€œFine.โ€ His voice is gruff. โ€œI did it. I put the hair and blood in your trunk. Okay?โ€

I stare at him, stunned he admitted it. Even though I had suspected it, I canโ€™t believe he would really do it. Andย why?

Seth jogs over, joining me next to Caleb. โ€œYou killed her, didnโ€™t you?

You killed Dawn, you bastard.โ€

Calebโ€™s face turns bright red. โ€œNo.ย No, of course not. I would never do that. I would never hurt her. Sheโ€ฆโ€

He stops himself mid-sentence.

โ€œShe what?โ€ I press him. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œIโ€ฆ nothing. I canโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

โ€œCaleb,ย tell me whatโ€™s going on here.โ€ A vein throbs in my temple. โ€œI deserve an explanation.โ€

Caleb looks at me for what feels like an hour, but itโ€™s probably more like a few seconds. He lets out a long breath. โ€œDawn isnโ€™t dead.โ€

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€ Seth shoots back.

Caleb holds up his hands. โ€œItโ€ฆ itโ€™s a long story. But sheโ€™s not dead, okay? I promise.โ€

โ€œThen where is she?โ€ I ask.

โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ He rakes a shaking hand through his hair. โ€œI donโ€™t know. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m here. I need your help.โ€

โ€œNo chance.โ€ Seth glares at Caleb through the darkness. โ€œYou put Natalie through the wringer. She was inย jailย because of you. Why did you do this to her? What the hell is the matter with you?โ€

Calebโ€™s Adamโ€™s apple bobs. โ€œListen, thereโ€™s no time. Dawnโ€”โ€ โ€œBullshit. You need to tell us right now why you did this. Otherwise,

weโ€™re calling the police on you.โ€

Caleb takes a step back. โ€œNo, pleaseโ€ฆโ€

Seth opens his mouth to say something else, but I hold up my hand to silence him. This isnโ€™t about him. This is about me and Caleb. I need the truth.

โ€œCaleb,โ€ I say, โ€œIโ€™m just trying to understand why you did this. I need to know. I donโ€™t think I deserve to be treated this way.โ€

I watch as his chest rises and falls, considering my statement. โ€œIโ€™ve watched you these last few months,โ€ he says. โ€œOrganizing your little 5K. Getting on all the podcasts and local news stations. Talking about how you

were raising money for yourย good friend Ameliaโ€ฆ But she wasnโ€™t your friend, was she?โ€

Thereโ€™s venom in his voice now. I have a sinking feeling in my chest. โ€œCalebโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you who she was,โ€ he spits at me. โ€œShe was myย sister. And she was Dawnโ€™s best friend. Not that you ever even thought of her as aย person.โ€

My legs feel like Jell-O. Iโ€™m scared if I donโ€™t grab onto something, Iโ€™m going to fall flat on my face. โ€œAmelia wasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMy sister is dead because of you!โ€ He is shouting loud enough for the neighbors to hear, but heโ€™s beyond caring. โ€œAnd you just moved on. Like she meantย nothingย to you. Like sheย wasย nothing. Worseโ€”youโ€™reย usingย her to promote yourself. How could you? Are you really that heartless?โ€

I dig my thumbnail into my palm. โ€œIโ€™m trying to raise money for charity.โ€

โ€œYeah, whatever. Youโ€™re just doing it because you like the attention. It helps promote the company. I get it. You used her back then, and youโ€™re using her now.โ€

Calebโ€™s eyes are burning with hatred. He hates me. He really and truly hates me. How could he have kissed me and joked around with me and taken me to dinner when he hated me this much?

โ€œI was seventeen years old,โ€ I manage. โ€œYes, I was awful to Amelia. But I was aย kid.โ€ I look over at Seth, who appears thoroughly confused. โ€œShe was a girl I knew in high school. I was mean to her. I know I wasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMean to her!โ€ Caleb bursts out. โ€œYou drove her to slit her wrists! My baby sister is dead because of you!โ€

I canโ€™t believe Caleb is Ameliaโ€™s brother. I didnโ€™t even know she had a brother. They have different last names. Hers was Hodge. Itโ€™s hard to forget what happened that year. Things just got out of control. Iโ€™m not going to deny any part of that.

I donโ€™t know why we were so mean to Amelia, in retrospect. I guess because she was different. And because weย could. When youโ€™re seventeen and youโ€™re pretty and popular, it makes you feel good to pick on somebody weaker than you are. It makes you feel powerful.

โ€œWhat do you want me to do, Caleb?โ€ I say. โ€œWhat can I do?โ€

โ€œI want you to rot in prison for the rest of your life,โ€ he hisses at me. โ€œLike my little sister is rotting in the ground.โ€

His eyes bore into me, smoldering with an anger that he will never be able to let go of. He can never forgive me for this. He will never stop believing that I should be punished for the rest of my life. Thereโ€™s nothing I can say or do to make this right.

โ€œSo why are you here, Caleb?โ€ I finally say. โ€œTo tell me how much you hate me?โ€

My question seems to take some of the fight out of him. โ€œLook,โ€ he says, โ€œI hate you for what you did, but you need to know that this whole thingโ€”Dawn planned the whole thing out. It wasย herย idea. And sheโ€™s taking it too far, becauseโ€ฆ well, you know Dawn. Thatโ€™s how she is.โ€

Clearly, he knows Dawn very well. Much better than I could have imagined.

โ€œDamn straight sheโ€™s taking it too far,โ€ Seth chimes in. โ€œYou sent an innocent person to jail.โ€

Caleb shoots him a withering look. โ€œRight, but she doesnโ€™t think the charges will stick if there isnโ€™t a dead body.ย Herย dead bodyโ€”not whoever they found in the woods. She kept talking about that. Andโ€ฆ now I donโ€™tโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know where she is. She used my phone to call for a Lyft back to the south shore, and now I donโ€™t know where she went. She called me from a phone somewhere and left this disjointed message. She was giving me all these instructions for how to take care of her turtle and it sounded likeโ€ฆ like she was going toโ€ฆโ€

I gawk at him. โ€œWhat are you saying?โ€

His face crumbles. โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure sheโ€™s planning to kill herself. To make sure thereโ€™s a dead body.โ€

I clutch my chest. โ€œOh my God.โ€

Caleb is crying now. He buries his face in his palms, his shoulders shaking. Itโ€™s at that moment I realize something shocking. Calebย lovesย Dawn. He truly loves her. When he was with me, it was all an act, but heโ€™s not acting now. Heโ€™s terrified of losing her.

He pulls his hands away from his face, and his eyes are red and puffy. โ€œNatalie,โ€ he croaks. โ€œYouโ€™ve got to help me find her. Iโ€™ve been driving around for hours, and I donโ€™t know where she is. Please. You owe me this. You oweย her.โ€

โ€œHow could we possibly find her?โ€ I say.

โ€œItโ€™s impossible,โ€ Seth says. โ€œWeโ€™ve got to call the police.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Calebโ€™s voice is unwavering, despite his puffy face. โ€œYou canโ€™t do that to her. Do you know how much trouble sheโ€™ll be in?โ€

โ€œAs much trouble as Natalie was in this week?โ€ Seth retorts.

โ€œSeth, stop.โ€ I raise my eyes to look at Caleb. โ€œDo you have any idea where she could be?โ€

Caleb looks down at his watch. โ€œIf I had to guess, Iโ€™d say she has been hiding out near one of the beaches. Itโ€™s high tide tonight.โ€ He grimaces. โ€œShe probably figures if she drowns herself, she wonโ€™t be found for long enough that they wonโ€™t be able to place the exact time of death.โ€

Itโ€™s the same thought I had while I was sitting in jail. Wait for high tide, throw myself in the ocean.

โ€œWe can find her,โ€ I say. Too bad there are about a million beaches around here, depending on how far she went. What if sheโ€™s all the way in Cape Cod? โ€œWe need to split up. How far do you think she couldโ€™ve gone from here?โ€

โ€œShe took all the cash in my wallet,โ€ Caleb says. โ€œBut there wasnโ€™t a lot.

Maybe a hundred bucks. So she couldnโ€™t have gotten very far.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to find her,โ€ I say with more authority than I feel. โ€œWeโ€™ll stop her before she does anything stupid.โ€

I hope Iโ€™m right. I need to stop Dawn from killing herself. I need to make this right.
