โSTAY IN THE CAR,โย Seth says. โLock the doors.โ
He means well. Caleb isnโt who we thought he was, and heโs certainly been lying to me. But at the same time, I donโt think heโs dangerous. In my heart, I donโt believe he killed Dawn. I donโt think heโs capable of it. Even with all the lies, I can tell heโs not the sort of person who would do something like that.
And even if he is, heโs not going to kill me right in front of Seth, right on the street. If nothing else, heโs smarter than that. Heโs certainly not impulsive. Whatever heโs done was planned over monthsโmaybeย years.
So I unlock the car doors and get out, despite Sethโs protests. Caleb is walking toward me but thereโs nothing threatening about him. He doesnโt have a weapon. This is going to be okay. I need to know whatโs going on. I need the truth.
โHey, asshole!โ Seth yells. Heโs getting out of the car just behind me. โYou need to stay away from Natalie.โ
Caleb is about three feet away from me now. He looks up at Seth, shakes his head, and looks back down at me. I notice now that his brows are knitted together. โNatalie,โ he says in a shaky voice. โWe need to talk.โ
โDamn straight,โ I say. โYouโve been lying to me all along. You planted that hair and blood in my car, didnโt you?โ
Caleb looks taken aback. He didnโt expect me to say that. He stands there for a moment, not sure how to respond.
โWell?โ I prompt him.
โFine.โ His voice is gruff. โI did it. I put the hair and blood in your trunk. Okay?โ
I stare at him, stunned he admitted it. Even though I had suspected it, I canโt believe he would really do it. Andย why?
Seth jogs over, joining me next to Caleb. โYou killed her, didnโt you?
You killed Dawn, you bastard.โ
Calebโs face turns bright red. โNo.ย No, of course not. I would never do that. I would never hurt her. Sheโฆโ
He stops himself mid-sentence.
โShe what?โ I press him. โWhat is it?โ
He shakes his head. โIโฆ nothing. I canโtโฆโ
โCaleb,ย tell me whatโs going on here.โ A vein throbs in my temple. โI deserve an explanation.โ
Caleb looks at me for what feels like an hour, but itโs probably more like a few seconds. He lets out a long breath. โDawn isnโt dead.โ
โHow do you know that?โ Seth shoots back.
Caleb holds up his hands. โItโฆ itโs a long story. But sheโs not dead, okay? I promise.โ
โThen where is she?โ I ask.
โIโฆโ He rakes a shaking hand through his hair. โI donโt know. Thatโs why Iโm here. I need your help.โ
โNo chance.โ Seth glares at Caleb through the darkness. โYou put Natalie through the wringer. She was inย jailย because of you. Why did you do this to her? What the hell is the matter with you?โ
Calebโs Adamโs apple bobs. โListen, thereโs no time. Dawnโโ โBullshit. You need to tell us right now why you did this. Otherwise,
weโre calling the police on you.โ
Caleb takes a step back. โNo, pleaseโฆโ
Seth opens his mouth to say something else, but I hold up my hand to silence him. This isnโt about him. This is about me and Caleb. I need the truth.
โCaleb,โ I say, โIโm just trying to understand why you did this. I need to know. I donโt think I deserve to be treated this way.โ
I watch as his chest rises and falls, considering my statement. โIโve watched you these last few months,โ he says. โOrganizing your little 5K. Getting on all the podcasts and local news stations. Talking about how you
were raising money for yourย good friend Ameliaโฆ But she wasnโt your friend, was she?โ
Thereโs venom in his voice now. I have a sinking feeling in my chest. โCalebโฆโ
โIโll tell you who she was,โ he spits at me. โShe was myย sister. And she was Dawnโs best friend. Not that you ever even thought of her as aย person.โ
My legs feel like Jell-O. Iโm scared if I donโt grab onto something, Iโm going to fall flat on my face. โAmelia wasโฆโ
โMy sister is dead because of you!โ He is shouting loud enough for the neighbors to hear, but heโs beyond caring. โAnd you just moved on. Like she meantย nothingย to you. Like sheย wasย nothing. Worseโyouโreย usingย her to promote yourself. How could you? Are you really that heartless?โ
I dig my thumbnail into my palm. โIโm trying to raise money for charity.โ
โYeah, whatever. Youโre just doing it because you like the attention. It helps promote the company. I get it. You used her back then, and youโre using her now.โ
Calebโs eyes are burning with hatred. He hates me. He really and truly hates me. How could he have kissed me and joked around with me and taken me to dinner when he hated me this much?
โI was seventeen years old,โ I manage. โYes, I was awful to Amelia. But I was aย kid.โ I look over at Seth, who appears thoroughly confused. โShe was a girl I knew in high school. I was mean to her. I know I wasโฆโ
โMean to her!โ Caleb bursts out. โYou drove her to slit her wrists! My baby sister is dead because of you!โ
I canโt believe Caleb is Ameliaโs brother. I didnโt even know she had a brother. They have different last names. Hers was Hodge. Itโs hard to forget what happened that year. Things just got out of control. Iโm not going to deny any part of that.
I donโt know why we were so mean to Amelia, in retrospect. I guess because she was different. And because weย could. When youโre seventeen and youโre pretty and popular, it makes you feel good to pick on somebody weaker than you are. It makes you feel powerful.
โWhat do you want me to do, Caleb?โ I say. โWhat can I do?โ
โI want you to rot in prison for the rest of your life,โ he hisses at me. โLike my little sister is rotting in the ground.โ
His eyes bore into me, smoldering with an anger that he will never be able to let go of. He can never forgive me for this. He will never stop believing that I should be punished for the rest of my life. Thereโs nothing I can say or do to make this right.
โSo why are you here, Caleb?โ I finally say. โTo tell me how much you hate me?โ
My question seems to take some of the fight out of him. โLook,โ he says, โI hate you for what you did, but you need to know that this whole thingโDawn planned the whole thing out. It wasย herย idea. And sheโs taking it too far, becauseโฆ well, you know Dawn. Thatโs how she is.โ
Clearly, he knows Dawn very well. Much better than I could have imagined.
โDamn straight sheโs taking it too far,โ Seth chimes in. โYou sent an innocent person to jail.โ
Caleb shoots him a withering look. โRight, but she doesnโt think the charges will stick if there isnโt a dead body.ย Herย dead bodyโnot whoever they found in the woods. She kept talking about that. Andโฆ now I donโtโฆ I donโt know where she is. She used my phone to call for a Lyft back to the south shore, and now I donโt know where she went. She called me from a phone somewhere and left this disjointed message. She was giving me all these instructions for how to take care of her turtle and it sounded likeโฆ like she was going toโฆโ
I gawk at him. โWhat are you saying?โ
His face crumbles. โIโm pretty sure sheโs planning to kill herself. To make sure thereโs a dead body.โ
I clutch my chest. โOh my God.โ
Caleb is crying now. He buries his face in his palms, his shoulders shaking. Itโs at that moment I realize something shocking. Calebย lovesย Dawn. He truly loves her. When he was with me, it was all an act, but heโs not acting now. Heโs terrified of losing her.
He pulls his hands away from his face, and his eyes are red and puffy. โNatalie,โ he croaks. โYouโve got to help me find her. Iโve been driving around for hours, and I donโt know where she is. Please. You owe me this. You oweย her.โ
โHow could we possibly find her?โ I say.
โItโs impossible,โ Seth says. โWeโve got to call the police.โ
โNo.โ Calebโs voice is unwavering, despite his puffy face. โYou canโt do that to her. Do you know how much trouble sheโll be in?โ
โAs much trouble as Natalie was in this week?โ Seth retorts.
โSeth, stop.โ I raise my eyes to look at Caleb. โDo you have any idea where she could be?โ
Caleb looks down at his watch. โIf I had to guess, Iโd say she has been hiding out near one of the beaches. Itโs high tide tonight.โ He grimaces. โShe probably figures if she drowns herself, she wonโt be found for long enough that they wonโt be able to place the exact time of death.โ
Itโs the same thought I had while I was sitting in jail. Wait for high tide, throw myself in the ocean.
โWe can find her,โ I say. Too bad there are about a million beaches around here, depending on how far she went. What if sheโs all the way in Cape Cod? โWe need to split up. How far do you think she couldโve gone from here?โ
โShe took all the cash in my wallet,โ Caleb says. โBut there wasnโt a lot.
Maybe a hundred bucks. So she couldnโt have gotten very far.โ
โWeโre going to find her,โ I say with more authority than I feel. โWeโll stop her before she does anything stupid.โ
I hope Iโm right. I need to stop Dawn from killing herself. I need to make this right.
