Chapter no 13

Never Lie

This is session 137 with EJ, a 29-year-old man suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. This will be our final session.

โ€œHiya, Doc. How are you doing?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m well. How are you?โ€

โ€œI got you a present.โ€ โ€œOh?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a bottle of Rustenberg Cabernet Sauvignon. Itโ€™s from South Africa, so itโ€™s got eucalyptus notes.โ€

โ€œWell, thank you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know how much you know about wine pairing, but this is a wine you want to eat with steak or a dish that has a heavy buttery creamy sauce. It makes the wine earthier because it neutralizes the tannins.โ€

โ€œI appreciate the tip. Please have a seat.โ€

โ€œYeah, sure, of course. I love this part, you know? Where I get to sit on your couch.โ€

โ€œYes. Listenโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s a nice one too. Real leather. You must make the big bucks, Doc. You probably donโ€™t even need me buying you bottles of wine! And you donโ€™t even take insurance.โ€

โ€œYes. Actually, thatโ€™s what I wanted to talk to you about.โ€

โ€œAbout what? Insurance? I havenโ€™t used that. My mom has been paying for all the sessions.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the thing. She hasnโ€™t. I have explained to you multiple times that she feels you have not made enough

progress during these sessions and she doesnโ€™t want to pay for them anymore, and as you know, I donโ€™t take insurance.โ€ โ€œBut I disagree. I feel like weย haveย made a lot of

progress. This really helps me, you know? I like coming here.โ€

โ€œWhether or not you have the potential to progress during these sessions, itโ€™s reasonable that she doesnโ€™t want to continue paying after you have been coming to me for over two years.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s dumb.โ€

โ€œRegardless, this is her decision. And as I explained to you in our last several sessions, I have not received payment for two months now.โ€

โ€œOh. I get it. This is about money.โ€

โ€œUnfortunately, this is a business. I have bills to pay. And if youโ€™re not compensating me for my servicesโ€”โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t have the money, Doc. Youโ€™re expensive, you know? Who can afford that? Iโ€™m not rich like my parents. All I get is this tiny allowance that barely even covers my rent and car.โ€

โ€œWe have spoken multiple times about how beneficial it would be if you looked for a job.โ€

โ€œDoc, Iโ€™mย trying, okay? I canโ€™t get a job. Itโ€™s not that easy. I donโ€™t have a bunch of fancy degrees like you do.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a college graduate.โ€

โ€œYeah, so what? Everybodyโ€™s a college graduate. Look, Iโ€™ll pay you eventually. You have my word. Canโ€™t I have a tab?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid that wouldnโ€™t be fair.โ€ โ€œFair? Fair to who?โ€

โ€œFair to the people who pay for these sessions.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s bullshit, Doc! And itโ€™s not like you need the money. I mean, you had that bestselling book. I bet you made a fortune. Look at this place you got here.ย Youย should payย meย to hear all my interesting life stories.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s irrelevant.โ€

โ€œSure it is. I bet you could write a whole book about my life. You would probably make a million bucks off of it. That would pay for my sessions, wouldnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t work that way.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re just going to cut me off because I canโ€™t afford your sessions anymore? Goodbye and good luck?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I have spoken to a colleague of mine who accepts your insurance, and he would be happy to take you on as a patient. Iโ€™ve got his number right here.โ€

โ€œSo thatโ€™s it. Youโ€™re dumping me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not โ€˜dumpingโ€™ youโ€”Iโ€™m referring you to a colleague. If youโ€™re able to pay for my sessions in the future

โ€”โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll bet. My money is good enough for you, but Iโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true at all. I just canโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œI should go to the papers about this. I can just see the news story. Big fancy Harvard-educated psychiatrist cuts off a patient in need because he doesnโ€™t have enough money.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think the newspapers would be interested in a story like that. But do what you must.โ€

โ€œThis is all an excuse, isnโ€™t it? You donโ€™t actually care about me.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re probably thrilled about this. You were just waiting for an opportunity to dump me as a patient.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true.โ€

โ€œBullshit. You were pretending to care about me this whole time. You never cared though.โ€

โ€œI care about you. But I canโ€™t provide my services for free.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re a real piece of work, Doc. I canโ€™t believe you.

And after I came here with aย giftย for you.โ€

โ€œYou can have the wine back if you want it.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t. Keep it.โ€

โ€œAs I said, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œSorry? You donโ€™t know what sorry is. Youโ€™re going to be

reallyย sorry you kicked me out of here.โ€ โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou hear me, Doc?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to have to ask you to leave now.โ€

โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll leave. Now that I know what youโ€™re really like, I wouldnโ€™t keep coming to you if you begged me. And I bet anything, someday youย willย beg me.โ€
